Statement/Abstract/Summary:

Water is the elixir of life. Drinking water has become a precious entity nowadays. Every government spends a huge
amount of money in providing secured water supply to people. Water is big medium were transmission of contamination can take
place easily. To prevent this many treatment technologies are practiced nowadays. Mostly physio-chemical treatment is done on
large scale. Even though they are efficient they have certain unavoidable drawbacks. Chemicals like alum (aluminum sulfate),
ferric chloride or sulfate, Insoluble aluminum ferric hydroxide and aluminum or iron hydroxo complex, PAC (poly-aluminum
chloride) and Poly-aluminum silico sulphate (PASS) are being used as chemical coagulants, but they are very toxic to humans.
Chemical adsorbents like charcoal, activated carbon are costly. Chemical disinfectants used like chlorine gas, bromine causes
chronic diseases. Thus the usage of biomaterials as coagulant, and disinfectants reduce the risk of toxicity and recalcitrant presence.
Fine powder of Strychnos potatoram seeds, Moringa oleifera seeds are used as a potent coagulant and neem seed powder is used
as a disinfectant. The efficiency of the above told biomaterials were estimated and the optimum dosage was identified by
coagulation and disinfectant techniques. Thus the successful trial can be scaled up and implemented to large scale treatment of
water. The study provides good scope for the use of biomaterials in the field of water and wastewater treatment.
