Textbooks

Leadership: Theory and Practice

This text starts with the history of leadership and how it has developed over the years.

Many philosophies are shared, including: trait theory, style theory, servant leadership and team

leadership. This text has many evaluation tools to help analyze what kind of leader you are, and

where improvements need to be made. (Northouse, 2011).

What Great Principals Do Differently

This book describes 18 behaviors that the most effective principals exhibit in their

schools. There are many memorable stories in this textbook and even some sections that I

believe will be very effective for future staff members that I will work with. The style of writing

is very easy to comprehend and has the feeling of more of a novel than a textbook. Excellent

resource for introspection and further exploration on what needs to be changed. This text does

not have formal tests or quizzes to measure leadership qualities. (Whitaker 2012).

Dealing with Difficult Teachers

This was written by the same author as What Great Principals Do Differently. As such, it

will be a great resource for me to refer back to in what Mr. Whitaker refers to as the most

difficult part of being a principal dealing with teachers that are difficult (Whitaker 2015). This

will also be an excellent resource for stories as I continue my career and come across problems

that I need to solve with professionalism.

ANNOTATED REFERENCE LIST 3

Law and Ethics in Educational Leadership

This textbook is a great resource for laws that have been passed in the country. Excellent

resource to be familiar with in regards to court cases. Not a text that I would share or have my

teachers be familiar with at times can be daunting to go through. Keep this book as a

reference.

A Casebook for School Leaders

Fabulous textbook. Short, concise situations are given but no solutions. This is an

excellent resource in some cases for teachers. Would be great for legal role playing as situations

arise / need to be prevented in training.

The Principals Guide to School Budgeting

Not my favorite read. Use as a reference guide. Brings up the importance of involving

stakeholders in your decisions, how to create a budget, how budgetary processes are handled, etc.

This will be a reference tool as a principal for process on budgeting basics. It goes through steps

and funding processes quite thoroughly.

Articles

Legal Literacy for Teachers

Great article to remember my obligation to my teachers. Even though teaching law may

not be in my job description, it is my responsibility to educate my teachers. A survey was taken

and referenced in this article where teachers were given a legal test. The mean average score

was around 40% correct. The authors regarded this as alarming, but the most alarming

information was that many of the teachers were answering incorrectly on legal issues that had

changed a decade before.

An excellent reminder that I am responsible to ensure following the law, and the fighting

of ignorance when it comes to legal policy. My teachers have enough to collaborate about, legal

here say should not be on that list.

Financial Crisis 101

Article about what can be cut and ways to collaborate with the school particularly the

teachers about the budget. Also provides information about education foundations, grants,

volunteers, etc. From a magazine called Education Digest. I want to subscribe to this magazine

as a principal. I also want to reference this article for information on additional funding for our

school.

Academic ROI: What Does the Most Good?

This article is fascinating. It talks about using a mathematical formula to justify spending

correlating it to student success. It particularly highlights effective spending in special

education programs, speech language services and aide support. Fascinating read should read

it again when I have my own school budget sitting in front of me as a new principal.

Why Enrollment Projections Go Wrong

Interesting article about the importance of watching the enrollment trends at the school

and district levels. Talks about the serious budget conflicts that can arise because of these

mistakes. There are also several good suggestions in here of what to do, or be aware of in

situations where enrollment is over or under projected. This article also recommends a computer

mapping of the student population on a five-year scale. Use this information to determine

models to use to predict projection of numbers.

Websites

Utah State Legislature Website

https://le.utah.gov/

Excellent website to utilize to stay up-to-date on laws passed in Utah. You can filter laws

passed specific to education via the home screen.

The Joyce Foundation

www.joycefdn.org

Excellent website to get extra grant money. Not currently funding for Utah. Sent an

email to the foundation about funding resources for Utah. Might be an excellent resource if I do

administration outside of Utah.
