1. Introduction
Lifecomm is a CSC product which provides comprehensive support for Life and Annuity products.
Lifecomm is a Policy Admin System which takes care of Cash Management and Output management system. It
processes the policy data for various policy prints which are needed for different type of documents, be it proof of
insurance, Form60 and others. Policy issue is described as the process between receipt of an application for
insurance through the final disposition of that application to an appropriate processing power to handle all required
issue administration, cash management, document properties, correspondence preparation, and information
access/update functions relating to the policy issue process.

This Policy Administration system gives organizations a competitive edge by reducing costs, improving productivity
and accelerating the speed to market for new products. The system is a comprehensive on-line system with the
flexibility and performance capabilities necessary to meet the challenges of a competitive market.

2. Terms under Lifecomm

PMR stands for Policy Master Record which contains all the processed policies in the Lifecomm. PMR contains
information in the form of Trailers about policies.
The term Trailer is a Data processing term used to describe Policy information and usually relates to specific
functions. For example,
AA Trailer: The Policy Control Trailer (AA) contains a great deal of important and varied information that is
applicable to all Processing Lines of Business. Unique feature is, this trailer contains all the trailer names and
their count at the bottom which are present in that particular policy

PDF stands for Plan description file which is also called Rule book containing the processing rules of various plans.
PDF contains information in form of Sections about plans/products

Relevance of PDF in Lifecomm:

The PDF is the basis for almost everything in the processing system. All insurance systems have a 'Version' of the
PDF. In LIFE/70 it's the Ratebook. In Vantage it's the 'Tables'. When there are problems with a cycle, with specific
policies, the PDF is where it is usually begin checked to see what's wrong.
PMRCB is Policy Master Record Code Book containing all the trailer information of policies and
PDM is Plan Description Manual containing sections of rules in context of various plans

PLOB stands for Processing Line of Business. PLOBs are basically different types of products that are available under
the basic Life cycle. Few PLOBs defined are,
PLOB 20- This covers term insurance of all types, Whole Life ( Par/Non Par)
PLOB 21- Non Traditional (endowment, annuity, UL etc.-all other plans except term and whole-life)
PLOB 22- Variable Universal Life (VUL-Unit trust version of UL)

- This is similar to flexible premium universal policy except that cash value is made up of multiple
funds each of the funds are invested in different commodity
- Fund value is defined as number of units.
- Cash value defined as number of units times UNIT VALUE accumulated for each fund.
- Unit values (therefore cash values) can increase or decrease with minimum death benefit and
minimum living benefit

3.2 Online& Batch System in Lifecomm

3.2.1 Online systems

Policy Owner Service - Policy owner service is not a real time update system to the Policy master file,
instead it creates the transaction and this transaction will be processed by the policy maintenance cycle
during the night batch cycle and it will update the policy Master record trailers.

Collections - The collection system is a vehicle for processing high-volume paid-as-billed payments

Billing - The Billing sub-system is used primarily by New Business , the various specialty teams (via
InFront), and Premium Accounting and Disbursement Processing to add or change billing information on
policies billed using GEIP, payroll deduction (list bill), military, and Mon-U-Matic (EFT) billing forms.
Information kept on the billing master file (known as the billing case file) includes bank-level
information, as well as policy/bank account information.

Alpha Index - The Alpha Index sub-system contains data on both placed and non-placed policies, such as
names, date of birth, policy numbers associated with the person, and the relationship the person has to
a given policy. It can be used to locate or find match to policies in LifeComm belonging to someone
whose name is known in part or in full.

Underwriting & Issue - The Underwriting and issue is a sub-system is primarily used for the New
Business and for certain changes made on the existing policy. subsystem speeds issue, improves
accuracy, assures timelier follow-up on pending requirements and aids in reducing the clerical workload
associated with policy issue

Agent/Agency Compensation - - This system provides the agent hierarchy and calculates the
commissions as per those levels and also provides reporting capabilities of the agents. Agency
compensation subsystem is 3-fold which provides for computation for agents compensation by
calculating and accruing commissions and other due amounts, comprehensive reporting capability to
assist HO in support of sales organization and flexibility in calculation and reporting capabilities and data
base so that new compensation schemes, new report requirements and additional information in master
record are incorporated with minimal effort. Functions supported by Agent/agency compensation
system: Commission calculation, commission accrual, management reporting, Annualization, agent
payment, accounting preparation and compilation of personal data.

General Ledger - Controls CWA Accounting transactions. The policy accounting transactions coming from
the policy maintenance cycle are sent to the appropriate accounts through the use of general ledger
tables.

Lifecomms online-portion is split into sub-systems, which are

LUWI A.Transactions - Underwriting and Issue
LBIL B.Transactions - Billing
LPOS D...Transactions - POS (policy owner service) & collections
LAGN E...Transactions - Agent/Agency

LCPA GTransactions Accounting
LALF - I Transactions Alpha index
LFCM - M Transactions Lifecomm Online-services

3.2.2 Batch systems

Agent/Agency Performance - Agency performance subsystem provides a flexible and effective tool to
evaluate all aspects of production and retention performance of its agents and agencies.

Billing - The Billing sub-system is used to add or change billing information on polices using GEIP, payroll
deduction, military, and Mon-U-Matic billing forms. Entry of billing information may be done at policy entry
through In-front or EZ-App, as well as directly in Lifecomm

Policy Maintenance Cycle - Transactions are placed in batches and processed daily in the policy maintenance
cycle. PMC involves Batch processing only. PMC updates, deletes, add trailers to the Master Record. Handles
all maintenance to the Policy Master File. Accepts newly-delivered Policy Master Records from the
Underwriting and Issue subsystem and adds them to the Policy Master File. Processes file maintenance,
policy accounting, and status transactions from the Policy Owner Service, Collection and Underwriting and
Issue subsystems of Lifecomm, as well as other sources (lockbox payments, MAO billing, etc.), and updates
the policy master records on the Policy Master File

Check writing & Reconciliation - The Check writing sub-system creates checks and control reports based on
extracts it receives from other Lifecomm Sub-system. It has no on-line component. To make use of the
reconciliation segment of the check writing and reconciliation system, the reconciliation file must be created
for all previous outstanding checks issued prior to conversion

Correspondence - Policy correspondence means policy pages of a contract like letters, notices etc.

Valuation/Policy Exhibit - Policy exhibit means the annual statements of policies and management reporting
of company, all transactions affecting insurance amounts are sent to the policy exhibit system by the policy
maintenance system.

4. Flow of Policy in Lifecomm System
A POS transaction for any editing in PMR is forwarded by the cycle transaction file for processing through the
maintenance cycle and updating in the policy master file after referring to the rules in PDF. Any discrepancy
puts it into the pending record file.
A policy master record for the pending record is created when the policy is delivered by the UWI subsystem
through the policy maintenance cycle.
Any POS transaction is executed through the policy maintenance cycle subsystem.
Transactions are placed in batches and processed daily in the policy maintenance cycle.

5. Lifecomm Date Cards

Most dates in LifeComm are updated by batch jobs called "Parm Drivers".
The Parm drivers take in a file that begins with the override cards containing Input dates and other
overrides and their values for the current Cycle which are followed by the Parm cards, set up for an IDCAMS
update of the Parm library PDS.
The Parm cards contain various overrides.
The job updates the Parm cards with the values given in the override cards and then loads the Parm library
with the cards.
The date card inputs for each job are in the appropriate SYSIN.DATE.
