SESSION 4. Problem Set

Use the following data on length of service in days (X) and cost per day in dollars (Y) for 10
patients on a health care program.

A. State which model the data follow and plot the scatter diagram.
Answer: The model that the data follows is Low Linear Correlation Model, because
based on the plotted scatter diagram the points does not clearly follow a straight
line. (See Session 4 SPSS Output)
B. Do you expect the r to be positive or negative from looking at the scatter diagram?
Answer: Based on the scatter diagram, I expect the r to be negative. Since the high
values of x are paired with the low values of y and low values of x are paired with
high values of y. (See Session 4 SPSS Output)
Should b be positive or negative?
Answer: It is also negative.
C. Find the equation of the regression model that will predict cost per day given the
length of services in days.
Answer: y=a+bx
y= 110.035+ (-0.315)x

SESSION 6. Workshop 1:

Using the employee data file, is there a significant difference in the current salary of the
employees when they are grouped according to employment category and educational
level?
Answer: There is no significant difference between current salary of employees
when they are grouped according to employment category with t value of 43.885,
p=<.01 and educational level with t value of 43.873, p= <.01. (See Session 6
Workshop 1 SPSS Output).
SESSION 6. Workshop 2:

Using the 1991 US General Social Survey Data, is there a significant difference in the
general happiness and life excitement perception of the respondents when they are
grouped according to:

Race, (GH=S, LE=NS), white race happier than black

Answer: The result from the analysis shows that there is a significant difference of
white and black race according to General Happiness and Life excitement
perception with t value of -4.260 for GH and -1.004 for life excitement. (See Session
6 Workshop 2 SPSS Output).

Regional location, NS
Answer: The result of the analysis shows that there is no significant difference for
both regions for general happiness with t value of 2.226 and 2.189, p=<.01.
Meanwhile, based on life excitement perception, there is significant difference of
both regions with t value of -0.675 and -0.676, p=<.01 (See Session 6 Workshop 2
SPSS Output).

Number of Children, NS
Answer: The result of the analysis shows that there is significant difference in
general happiness with t value of -1.407 and 1.404 and life excitement perception
with t value of -.092 and -.078 when the respondents were group based on number of
children. (See Session 6 Workshop 2 SPSS Output).

Occupational category (S), managerial vs gen labor

Answer: The result of the analysis shows that there is no significant difference in
general happiness with t value of 3.172 and 3.130 and life excitement perception with
t value of 5.590 and 5.857 when the respondents were group based on occupational
category. (See Session 6 Workshop 2 SPSS Output).

Highest year completed?

Answer: The result of the analysis shows that there is a significant difference in
general happiness with t value of -2.985 and -2.928 and life excitement perception
with t value of -3.473 and -3.011 when respondents grouped based on highest year
completed. (See Session 6 Workshop 2 SPSS Output).
SESSION 7. Problem Set 1:
1. A general physician recorded the oral and rectal temperatures of nine consecutive
patients who made first visits to his office. The temperatures are given in degrees
Celcius.
Is there a significant mean difference in the patients oral and rectal temperature?
Answer: The result from the analysis indicates that there is significant mean
difference in the temperature either oral or rectal among the 9 patients with t value
of -3.200, p= <.01. (See Session 7 Problem Set 1 SPSS Output).

SESSION 7. Problem Set 2:

2. Bacterial colonies were counted on 12 plates. There were two observers and the plate
counts obtained. Is there a significant mean difference in the observers bacterial
colonies count?
Answer: The result from the analysis indicates that there is a significant mean
difference in the observers bacterial colonies count with t value of -2.853, p=<.01.
(See Session 7 Problem Set 2 SPSS Output).
