Research Project: Non-Verbal Communication (On-going)

Purpose: Many of the children at Emilys House are non-verbal. To help better

done to help further my understanding of how non-verbal children
communicate.
Task: Task: Conduct a research project to better understand the ways the

Objectives:
1- Learn possible causes for a child to be non-verbal.
2- Gather a better understanding of the other ways non-verbal
children communicate.
3- Develop background knowledge for myself to pull from on
how to communicate with child who are non-verbal.
Description:
Research the background of human communication
(what part of the brain is responsible for
communication).
Look into the basics of non-verbal communication
(eye contact, gestures, posture etc.).
Discover the many ways that non-verbal children
communicate.
Find out what things I can do to improve my
communication with children who are non-verbal, and
how to build a positive relationship with them.

Reflection: To be revised when complete
(What went well, what didnt
go well) Thus far, I have learned a lot more then I originally knew about
working with non-verbal children. For myself, once I started
researching I found that it was just not enough for me to know that a
child is non-verbal; I needed to know why. I have spent a good
amount of time learning about the brain, and which parts are
responsible for verbal communication. I have also been able to learn
about what functions a child must be capable of, and what internal
body structures are needed for verbal communication to be possible.
Over I feel that I now have the background knowledge I need to move
forward and begin to learn more about how non-verbal children
communicate. I am looking forward to researching this topic more,
and I do feel like this project will set me up for success for when I start
to interact with the children more after my training is complete.
