Dear Potential Sponsor,

This letter comes to you because you are being asked to act as a sponsor for a student in
you
our parish who has been enrolled as a candidate for the Sacrament of Confirmation. As
know, this is o privilege, but ta occept also brings with it responsibilifies. According to Church
law, a person acting as a sponsor must:
L. Have the intention of fulfilling the role of a sponsor'
Z. Be sufficiently mature in his or her faith commitment, and must be actively expressing it
in the Catholic Church communitY.
3. Has completed their 16th year of age.
4. Be a Catholic who has been Confirmed, and who leads a life offaith in keeping with the
functions as sponsor, including attending Mass on every Sunday and Holy Day of
Obligation.
5. Not be either the father or mother of the person being Confirmed.
Should you find yourself in a situation of being away from the Church at this time, we
encourage you to take this opportunity to speak with a priest and return to the Sacraments.
That in itself would provide the kind of example that can be a very important sign of Christian
living to the candidate.
After you have carefully and prayerfully considered this invitatiCIn to act as a sponsor,
seal it. This will
prac-ticing
verify to us that you meet the qualifications mentioned above, that you are an active,
Catholic, and that you intend to fulfill this most important and honorable role. This form, signed
by your parish priest, should be returned to the Religious Education Office at St.
Michael Parish
by December 1't, 2OL7.
