Learning Area: English Topic: Tragedy: Romeo & Juliet (lesson 1)


Curriculum content description: (ACELA1563) Understand that Standard Australian English in its spoken and written
forms has a history of evolution and change and continues to evolve (ACELA1567) Understand how paragraphs and images
can be arranged for different purposes, audiences, perspectives and stylistic effects (ACELA1569) Analyse and evaluate the
effectiveness of a wide range of sentence and clause structures as authors design and craft texts (ACELT1751) Plan, rehearse
and deliver presentations, selecting and sequencing appropriate content and multimodal elements to influence a course of
action
Students prior knowledge and experience:
- Students have watched Romeo & Juliet as well as done some limited reading of the play.
- There has been some engagement with the idea of tragedy
Learning purpose: to encourage student interaction with the play of R&J and identifies examples of the theme of
tragedy.

- Range of discussions (with peers as a pair and also with the whole class)

Timing: Learning Experiences:

Introduction:
10 mins
Recap of R&J
- Who are the families?
- Who is Romeo in love with at the beginning of the play?
- Which character marries R&J?
- Who else wants to marry Juliet?
- What final effects do the deaths of R&J have on the two rival families?
Sequence:
10-15 Class discussion on the following to start students thinking about what tragedy is.
mins What is a tragedy?
What makes something a tragedy?
Why is R&J a tragedy?
- Direct students to the tragic conventions list on seqta
- They are then required to go through the prezi on tragedy and discuss and note anything they think is
important.
25 mins Students will be given a tragic convention (from the list on seqta and asked to give a 1-minute presentation the
following week based on that convention drawing examples from Romeo and Juliet)
- Students to work on their presentations for the rest of class.
- They must draw examples from the text and explain how they show their given tragic convention.

10 mins Lesson conclusion:


- Reiterate the conventions of tragedy through discussion
- Make sure all students understand the conventions they are to present on and that they are due first thing, the
following lesson.
Management of behaviour:
- Looking at students who are talking, making eye contact with them to indicate they need to be silent
- Walking around the classroom, looking at all students, making sure theyre on task based on their discussions and
the work they are producing.

Lesson Evaluation:
I felt this lesson went well, students seemed engaged in the task and their presentations. I do think I was pushed for time. I need to find
ways to conclude lessons (such as recapping what has been discussed with students throughout the lesson) as I didnt have time for my
lesson conclusion.
