Natural Disaster

Science Fair
Assignment Task Sheet
Due Date: Presenting Tuesday Week 9
Your Task:
You will need to select one natural disaster to be the focus of your assignment. Choose one you are
interested in, or want to explore further. Use our brainstorming list to help you.
To explore your natural disaster you will need to complete all parts of section A (what is your
disaster?) and section B (natural disaster management).
Complete your research and draft notes in your science book. Remember to put your findings into
your own words.
You will need to have a teacher check your work at the checkpoints outlined below. Remember you
can ask for help and clarification at any time you are unsure!
Your final copy needs to be presented visually, so it can be shown at our class Science Fair. You
could create a poster, diorama, PowerPoint on your Ipad, brochure, booklet, or another way of your
choice. Remember to make it informative and eye catching.
When presenting the Science Fair you will be standing with your presentation and talking with your
audience, so you need to understand your findings.
You will need to keep a list of all your resources you use.
The research component is worth 60% of your grade.
The presentation component is worth 30% of your grade.

Section A: What is your disaster?

1. What is your disaster?
2. How does your disaster occur?
3. How is your disaster an extreme weather event, or a geological event?

Teacher Checkpoint: Signed ____________________________________ Date ____________________

4. How does your disaster affect Earths surface? Explore both living and non-living things. What are
the short term effects, and what are the long term effects?
5. Describe a major event when your disaster has occurred in the Australia or Asia region.

Teacher Checkpoint: Signed ____________________________________ Date ____________________

Section B: Natural disaster management.

1. What disaster management strategies can be put into place to minimise short term and long term
effects of your natural disaster?
2. What advice would you provide for people who are planning to live in an area where your natural
disaster occurs frequently?

Teacher Checkpoint: Signed ____________________________________ Date ____________________

Optional Question:
1. How do you think gathering evidence helps scientists to predict the effect of major geological or
extreme weather events?
