LESSON PLAN

LEARNING AREA: Mathematics

YEAR LEVEL: 2/3 TIME: 50 mins

LESSON TOPIC: 2D and 3D Shapes

AIM: (From ACARA, or Desired Student Outcome from SACSA)

Describe and draw two-dimensional shapes, with and without digital
technologies (ACMMG042)

Describe the features of three-dimensional objects (ACMMG043)

LESSON OUTCOMES: (These should relate to both the topic and to the curriculum link)
Students will explore the features of 3D shapes

REFERENCES & RESOURCES:

Images taken from previous lesson
IWB

STUDENT ASSESSMENT:
Students being able to identify the features of a 3D shape, edges, faces, vertices.

SELF ASSESSMENT:
How well did the lesson flow?
Any issues with behaviour management?

TEACHING PROCEDURE:
TIME STEPS COMMENTS

1. INTRODUCTION (whole class)

5 mins Playing 3D shape video. Ask students to take note of

these key words: Face, Edge Vertex/Vertices.

Read big book on 3D shapes about faces, Edges and

Vertex/ Vertices. Explain how these are features that define
3D shapes. Introduce right angles.

2. EXPLICIT TEACHING (whole class)

and/or
5 mins GUIDED DISCOVERY (whole class)

Demonstrate to the class some of the activities they will be

doing in todays class. Students will be using a photo to
label their photos. Under their photo they will have write
how many vertexes, faces and edges the shape has.
Students can use the wooden blocks in the classroom to
aid the in counting the edges, faces and vertices.

Show students how to set out their page on IWB or White

board.

30 3. EXPLORATION/PRACTICE(group/individual)
mins Students will be working in their group tables to complete
their work, individually
Students should be encouraged to explain some of the .
features of their shapes to their groups.
During this time the teacher should be going around to
different groups and asking students questions.

4. CONCLUSION (whole class share/reflect)

5 mins Asking student how todays lesson went, and what shapes
they were able to makel.
