WV CSOs
Standard:6 Development of Motor Skills
(WE.S.6) Students will: apply concepts and principles of human movement to the development of motor skills and
learning of new skills that
apply to daily living experience
OBJECTIVE:
WE.4.6.01 - demonstrate critical elements or components for the kick, catch, throw, dribble with hands, and
jumping/landing
NATIONAL STANDARDS
Standard 1 - The physically literate individual demonstrates competency in a variety of motor skills and movement
patterns.

MANAGEMENT FRAMEWORK
Overall Time - 45-minute lesson
Time Frame 5-minute class entrance/introduction
20 minutes dribbling instruction
15-minute dribbling games
5- closure/ clean-up

STRATEGIES
-Teacher introduction with demonstration both visually as well as auditory.
-One on one teaching when needed

DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION/ ADAPTATIONS/ INTERVENTIONS

-Visual learners will be able to see the proper techniques of dribbling a basketball
-Auditory learners will be able to hear proper instructions on how to dribble a basketball
-Special needs students may receive individual one on one hands on teaching to help obtain basketball dribbling
skills.

PROCEDURES
This section has three parts, each are an important part of the lesson.
Introduction/ Lesson Set
QUESTION: How many students have dribbled a basketball in their life? (Thumbs up/down)
QUESTION: How many students play basketball for a team? (Raise hand)
Warm-up: 1) Students will run 30 seconds around the gym
2) 10 jumping jacks, 10 arm circles, 5 trunk twist, 10 push-ups, 10 sit-ups
Body & Transitions
- Split class into 4 equal groups and place at cones along the front of gym, give each group a ball that is to
be held securely
Introduce Dribbling Skills
- Hot hands: Students pass the ball from right hand to left hand as quickly as possible without dropping it.
Move the ball in front of the body to overhead and back down. 30 seconds then rotate students.
- Wrap it up: First student in each group has a ball. Students start passing ball from hand to hand around
their ankles then move up to waist, then to around their head, and back down. Repeat for 30 seconds
then rotate students.
- -Dribbling lines: One student in each group has a basketball. Students follow teachers commands on
particular dribbles.
-Single Hand Dribble: students dribble ball with right hand down to cone and back, then switch. After right
hand, move on to left hand.
-Alternating Hand Dribble: students dribble down to cone and back constantly switching from right to left
hand.
-Push Dribble: students dribble pushing the ball in front of them as fast as they can, while remaining
under control, and back.
-Low Dribble: students can choose either right or left hand but must dribble as low as possible to the
ground down to the cone and back.

- Dribbling Mania: All students have balls (if available), if not available then 5 students have a basketball at
a time. Cones are set up in a large square. Students then dribble inside the square attempting to knock
other classmates balls away while controlling their own dribble. If they lose control or go outside of
square they are out. If their ball is knocked away, then they are out.

ASSESSMENT
Diagnostic:
Questions that asked in the beginning will answer what prior experience students have with dribbling and handling
a basketball
Formative:
Observe students as they perform the different dribbling skills.
Summative:
Students will group in center of gym. Students will then be randomly asked what their favorite dribbling drill was &
how to do the particular skill.
MATERIALS
-8 cones to identify starting and ending points of lines
-5 basketballs (4 for the four groups of students, one for the teacher)

EXTENTED ACTIVITIES
If Student Finishes Early
-Continue to play the dribbling game
If Lesson Finishes Early
-Dribbling Relay Races: Students get in designated lines they were in. One at a time students dribble down to the
opposite cone and back using a dribbling skill the instructor directs to use. Once students are finished they must sit
down behind cone. First group all sitting down wins. Repeat races using different dribbling skills.
