various method of trusses,centre of gravity,centroid of area,volume & composite body,moment of inertia of plane
figure , parralel & perpendicular axis theorem,law of dry friction

Stress and Strain Analysis


Simple stress and strain: Introduction, Normal shear stresses, stress strain diagrams for ductile and brittle materials,
Elastic constants,strain Energy. ,hooks law,modulas of elasticity,poission ratio,elementary idea of shear forces,bending
moment
Torsion: Introduction, Torsion of Shafts of circular section, Torque and Twist, Shear stress due to Torque.

UNIT3:
THERMODYNAMICS

Fundamental Concepts and Definitions:

Definition of thermodynamics, system, surrounding and universe, phase, concept of continuum, macroscopic &
microscopic point of view. Density, specific volume, pressure, temperature.cyclic process equlibrium, Thermodynamic
equilibrium, property, state,
path, process, cyclic process, Energy and its form, work and heat, Enthalpy. Zeroth law: Concepts of Temperature,
zeroth law,reversible & irreversible functtion,concept of ideal gas,characteristics equation of gases ,universal gas
constant

Laws of thermodynamics:

First law: First law of thermodynamics. Concept of processes, flow processes and control volume, Flow work,
steady flow energy equation, Mechanical work in a steady flow of process.
Second law: Essence of second law, Thermal reservoir, Heat engines. COP of heat pump and refrigerator. Statements
of second law. Carnot cycle & carnot theorem, Clausius inequality. Concept of Entropy. otto cycle &diesel cycle-
construction ,principle & working
Introduction to I.C. Engines-two & four stoke S.I. and C.I. engines.

regulation of single phase transformer, O.C. and S.C. tests. ,features of rotating electric machines generator,emf &
torque,principle of synchronous generator.

D.C. Machines
Principle of electromechanical energy conversion, types of d.c. machines, excitation ,armature reaction &
commutation,E.M.F. equation, Magnetization and
load characteristics, losses and efficiency, speed control d.c. motors, applications,DC generator starting speed control .
