File Organization
Exercise: Create New Design File
1 From the File Manager, set the Workspace to the following:

Piping
You will now begin to model the Plumbing for the ground floor level that we have
been working with. During the design process, you will use many different
plumbing components to complete the model.

Building Designer is delivered with the most common shapes of piping:

Round Pipe
Flex Pipe

Families and Parts

When placing piping, it is important that you use the Family and Part information
to define the type of system you are placing. The part controls the symbology
(Level, Weight, Style, Color) of the piping, and the DataGroup System controls the
size and properties of the pipe.

Once the Building Primary dialog has been set you can then select the type of
pipe you wish to place and set its size.

Hint: Remember that the pipe is always placed at the current ACS level when the
locks are active. Different ACS planes can be defined in each view, so ALWAYS
check the active ACS in each view.

needed to control width, depth, end type, and other property information, such
as material and insulation.

When changing a pipe to a smaller or larger size during your routing, Building
Designer will automatically place a transition piece. Fittings, such as elbows, will
automatically be placed when routing pipes at angles.

Place Component Tool Settings

Class Date: 13-Nov-2013

When placing a pipe, the Tool Settings allow you to match attributes of existing
pipe work.
Part/Family - When on, part and family definitions of the selected component
are assigned to the new component.
Company: Mott-MacDonald

Size - When on, the new component aligns with the end of the selected
component.
Shape - When on, the new component is automatically sized to match the end
of the selected component.
Exchange - When on, replaces an existing component with the active
component.
Use Fence - When on, all existing component in the fence are replaced with
DO NOT DISTRIBUTE - Printing for Student Use is Permitted

the active component. The option menu sets the Fence (Selection) Mode.
Apply Slope - When on, applies the last set slope settings to the component
being placed in the route.

You also have the ability to set the placement position (Justification) of a pipe
when placing them in the model. Selecting the Justification Button will reveal the
available placement points.

Exercise: Place Pipe

1 Place pipe in your model. Click a datapoint to define the beginning of the
pipe and another to define the opposite end.
2 Continue adding sections of pipe for a schematic layout of the system.

3 Note that you can adjust the size or shape of the pipe while in the
command and any required transitions will be inserted automatically.

Default AutoFitting Options

You can set the properties for the default fitting that Building Designer uses when

inserting an elbow or transition onto a pipe. The default fittings can be set to a
specific radius as well as the end lengths.

To set the Default AutoFitting option for pipe chose the Elbow tool from the
Plumbing Design Task.

In the DataGroup Instance Data box, right click and chose Set As Default
AutoFitting Option. Any properties you have set (radius, Length 1, End Type,
etc.) will be used next time an Elbow is inserted in a run of pipe.
Class Date: 13-Nov-2013

Exercise: Place pipe

AutoFitting End Type Options

You can define the end type for pipe as an AutoFitting as well.
Class Date: 13-Nov-2013
Company: Mott-MacDonald

The EndType options follow a format as follows:

M- for a Male end, F- for a Female end.
The number indicates the flange depth. So an m-1,f-1 would be a pipe with a
male end and a female end, both with 1m flanges.

Stretch Pipe

The Stretch Pipe command works similarly to the Building Designer Extend Line
command. You can add length by extending an existing member or by adding a
new member adjoining an existing member.

Exercise: Stretch Pipe

Use the Stretch pipe tool to lengthen or shorten pipe segments in your model.

Manipulating Existing Elements

Break Pipe

Break pipe is very similar to the Building Designer Partial Delete tool; it will break
a length of pipe into two sections. Each pipe becomes its own individual element
and retains its own intelligence.

In addition to breaking a pipe into two sections, it can also break a long run of
pipe into standard lengths. This is especially helpful when laying out exact lengths

of pipe for manufacturing purposes.

Settings for Break:

Dynamic - The size of the break is determined interactively via data points.
Standard - When on, key-in a standard length to apply to selected

components. Standard lengths start at end nearest first data point.

Merge Collinear - Scans for connected pipe or pipes passing through a
common line, and merges them into one segment.
DO NOT DISTRIBUTE - Printing for Student Use is Permitted

Exercise: Break Pipe

Use Break pipe to break segments of pipe in your model.
Practice using the Standard Method to break pipe into even length segments.
Use Merge Collinear to combine the individual segments.

Join Tool

This is commonly used to join two previously placed pieces of piping. Depending
on the circumstances, individual fittings or a combination of fittings can be
inserted when the pipes are joined together.

Exercise: Join pipe

Use the join tool to connect 2 pipes. The pipes must be at the same elevation
in order to join.
Class Date: 13-Nov-2013

Join Pipe with Takeoff

Join pipe can also be used to join 2 pipes of different sizes. A take off will be

inserted and automatically fitted to the smaller pipe.

To join a pipe with Takeoff - In the Join Tool Settings dialog, change the
method to Join with Takeoff.
Select the pipe that will branch off the main pipe.
Select the main pipe second.

The Modify Component command is found in the Main Building Tools. It is used
to modify pipe fittings and fitting instance data. DataGroup System information is
modified in the heads up display view or in the DataGroup Instance Data dialog
during the modify operation.

When modifying a pipe length, you can change the size, type and the justification.

Exercise: Modify Component

1 Using the Modify Component tool, select a pipe.

You may need to rotate the fitting so that it is orientated properly, or you may
need to set a fitting inline. AccuDraw shortcuts are available to assist you in the
placement of your fittings and most other objects in the application.

When placing a fitting you may edit any of the DataGroup parameters; examples
are if you need to change a manufacturer's name, an elbow angle, or a transition
size.

When placing a fitting such as an elbow, the fitting tool will automatically launch
the Modify Fitting tool during the placement workflow. After a parameter has
been entered, and a datapoint accepts, the tool will reset.

Sprinklers and Pipe End Components

Sprinklers and Pipe End Components

In many Plumbing workflows you place the sprinklers in the area you are working
in before routing the pipe; Bentley Building Designer makes this easy.

The DataGroup Instance Data dialog allows you to control the size and properties
of the object that you are placing as well as all properties about the selected
object.
Class Date: 13-Nov-2013

The DataGroup System Definition is a catalog, or a set of many data definitions,

where one definition applies for each catalog type; examples of delivered catalog
types are flex pipe, elbows, three-way tees, and valves.

Sprinklers
Company: Mott-MacDonald

Exercise: Setting the new Sprinkler size

This exercise describes using the Place Sprinkler tool and setting the properties.
1 Set the Active Floor level to Ceiling Office 2 in the Floor Selector.
2 Check that the ACS locks have been activated by step 3.
