Module Overview
In this module you will model in AECOsim Building Designer Structural and place
concrete and steel members within the design. During the design process you will
use various Structural member placement tools.
Company: Mott-MacDonald
Module Prerequisites
Attendance at AECOsim Building Designer Prerequisites course BIM Essentials
and Processes, or experience in working with Bentley Building software
Module Objectives

File Organization
Exercise: Create a new file
From the Windows File Open dialog, set the Workspace to the following:
User: BuildingDesigner
Project: BuildingSample_ANZ
Class Date: 31-Oct-2013
Interface: default

Column Grid
The Column Grids tool manages grid creation and can be used to modify existing
column grids. Designers populate the Column Grids dialog with settings and
parameters of existing grids, which can then be modified and replaced.
Note: The Grid Name is required to place and edit the grid.
Description Sets a description of the grid.
Place Places the grid in the file, with a data point.
X Guides Sets the distance for the grid lines along the X axis.
Class Date: 31-Oct-2013
Y Guides Sets the distance for the grid lines along the Y axis.
Attributes Sets the Level, Color, Weight, Line Style and length of Leader lines
for the grid.
Labels Sets the Color, Weight, Font and Text size for the labels.
Restore Replace Grid Replaces the existing grid with the new values.
Structural Preferences
These preferences control if structural snaps are on, if global offset will be applied
and what flyover hints will be displayed.
Structural Snaps
Placement Points
It also represents the end of the member axis around which structural members
are rotated.
Class Date: 31-Oct-2013
You can enable or disable the display of all AccuSnap hints or specific types, such
as position, part name, rotation, grade, status, class, etc.
Once you have an AccuSnap target highlighted, you can cycle through all the
available placement points on that particular member.

Placement Points
The Placement Point controls the point of placement for a structural member.
While you are placing a steel member, the location on the member to which your
pointer is attached is determined by the placement point. This point also
represents the end of the member axis, around which structural members are
rotated and analyzed.

Placement Options
Coping
End treatment options for member placement tools are in two categories:
The first is available for tools generally used to place steel sections.
The second is used to placing concrete and timber sections.
When Automatic Coping is on, automatic coping occurs as steel members are

Settings include:
Flange clearance Maintains a space between the placed member
web and the connected member flanges (for I beams). The clearance
value is keyed in the available text field.
Web clearance Maintains a space between the placed member web

and the connected member web. The clearance value is keyed in the
available text field.
Inside corner Creates a relief on the inside corners of the cope. The
available types are illustrated on the icon drop list: square, radius or
round notch.
Radius Sets the size of the round inside corner treatments.
Cope to any interfering member Fits the member using the coping settings
around all members in the vicinity of the member end. The options for this
method are the same as those for the Cope to member connected by
AccuSnap method.
Cope normal to member line Copes the end cut on a connecting member
perpendicular to the member's center line.
Settings include:
Absolute clearance Trims the member back from the center line of
the connected member by the distance keyed in the Planar cut
clearance text field.
Minimum clearance Trims the member back from the center line of
the connected member, if the distance exceeds the keyed-in value.

Modify Type:
Modify end to point Modifies the length of the structural member to
a length identified by your data point.
Extend end to point Extends the length of the structural member to
a length identified by your data point, and enables the Distance and
Add Member controls.
Distance When on, lets you specify the amount to modify the selected
member's end. This is available only when Modify Type is set to Extend end to
point.
Note: The added column will inherit all attributes of the selected column.

Join Members
Join Members is used to join co-linear structural members. Both members merge
when the Join Members tool is applied. Members must be co-linear and co-planar.
End points must be coincident.
