'Used To' Past

'Used To' Past

'Used To' Past refers to past habits (habits that somebody had in the past, but
doesn't have anymore). In Romanian, used to means obinuia(m) s.

'Used To' Past is identical for all persons.

Affirmative / Interrogative / Negative

Affirmative: Subject + Used To + Verb (1st form) + (...)


I used to climb trees.
You used to climb trees.
He used to climb trees.

Interrogative: Did + Subject + Use To + Verb (1st form) + (...) ?


Did you use to play hide and seek?
Did he use to play hide and seek?
Did we use to play hide and seek?

Short answers:
Did you use to play hide and seek?
Yes, I did. / No, I did not. (No, I didn't.)

Negative: Subject + Did Not (Didn't) Use To + Verb (1st form) + (...)
I did not use to tell jokes.
You did not use to tell jokes.
She did not use to tell jokes.

We can say used not to instead of did not use to.


I used not to tell jokes. = I did not use to tell jokes.

Used To & Would

We can use would instead of used to when we mention how often something
used to happen.

I used to play in the schoolyard every day.


I would play in the schoolyard every day.

But it is incorrect to replace used to with would when we mention only the
activity.

Correct: I used to play card games.


Incorrect: I would play card games.

e.g.: M jucam n curtea colii n fiecare zi.
