COURSE CONTENTS
Strengths-based Leadership
In this session participants will discuss what defines an empowering workplace and identify leadership styles that support
empowerment. Through the skill of critical reflection, leaders will identify how their own skills, attitudes and knowledge
compare to the core competencies of a strengths based leader. Participants will also reflect on the strengths of their
own staff and organization and discuss how to leverage the strengths to overcome challenges.
Strength-based leaders value both strong communication and self-care skills. Communication plays a key role in
creating an empowering workplace. In this workshop participants will learn and practice strengths-based
communication techniques that will improve relationships and improve results. Leaders will identify practical strategies to
try in their organization such as powerful questions, communicating through conflict and how to turn complaints into
actionable statements of value. Additionally, participants will discuss how to identify and manage burnout, compassion
fatigue and secondary post-traumatic stress in themselves and their staff.
Strengths-based leaders have a broad definition of culture. In this workshop leaders will reflect on their own culture and
how it has shaped their values and beliefs. Participants will discuss the impact that bias has on their work and learn
strategies for addressing this bias. Cultural humility will be introduced as an approach to embracing and building on the
strengths of a diverse staff and organization. Finally, participants will explore organizational culture and how it supports or
blocks an empowering work environment.
Strengths-based leaders dont ignore concerns, they use strengths-based communication and goal planning
approaches to help staff build on their strengths and overcome challenges. In this workshop leaders will practice giving
and receiving strengths-based feedback, discuss goal plans, and identify the benefits of using tools to measure progress.
Leaders at any level in an organization have the ability to impact changes that lead to a more empowering workplace.
As success depends on different types of collaborations, including those with other organizations, the role of
Organizational Culture will be explored. In this session participants will discuss their vision for their team and what
strategies they can take to implement it.
Using individual data to inform group function can be a sensitive area. Therefore, this facilitated workshop offers flexible
approach that allows participants to feel comfortable exploring the concept of strength-based leadership, as well as
sharing information with others in small groups, and perhaps the entire class, so as to be able to apply the strength-
based leadership model to differing situations.

1. Executing This is the ability to get things done. A good executor is skilled at arranging and controlling tasks, events
and people, is consistent and focused, and is prepared to take responsibility for jobs.
2. Influencing This is the strength to "sell," influence or persuade others to support ideas, projects, tasks, attitudes, or
organizational approaches.
3. Relationship building This is the ability to encourage people to work together toward a common goal or ambition.
4. Strategic thinking A strategic thinker is skilled at analyzing information, seeing links and connections, and thinking
both inside and outside the box.
COURSE OUTCOMES
Let's look at the benefits of using a strengths-based leadership approach. For example:
Improving consensus and delegation. Working with experts in areas where you are less experienced is a sign of
strength, not weakness. You're admitting where you need help, accepting others' expertise, developing a more
consensual leadership style, focusing on what you do best, and promoting effective delegation
Improving engagement. Encouraging people to focus on their strengths increases team member enjoyment and
engagement. This survey found that only one percent of employees become disengaged if their manager
actively focuses on their strengths, while 40 percent become disengaged if they are ignored.
Effective hiring. You can use strengths-based leadership to develop your team. This approach encourages you
to hire people based on their individual strengths, not because their skills and interests align with your own. So,
you are more likely to develop a diverse team, with a range of strengths, skill-sets, attitudes, and cultural values

passing on responsibility to your team members, and less focused on making people "fit," which can reduce
