Step 3
Rhetorical Knowledge is being able to use texts from different sources to compose a new site
that incorporates multiple perspectives. For example, when I wrote a research paper on the
impact of pollution on a city, I had to find personal sources and an overview of the impact to
understand the true impact. When recording my data, I had to be sensitive to the topic because
many are negatively and positively impacted, so to address both sides I had to be unbiased. It
allowed me to see each side thoroughly and understand the problem further.

Critical Reading is being able to understand the key concepts and be able to dive deeper into the
meaning behind a text. To fully understand one needs to be able to apply the concepts learned.
For example, when reading Heart of Darkness, to fully understand the meaning of the text, I had
to analyze key words and phrases to get a deeper meaning of the text.

Composing Processes are different techniques that are needed in order for one to complete a
writing process effectively. When I write many research papers, I complete five stages in order
to create the ideal paper. Starting out with an outline, then writing multiple rough drafts, to
finally creating the final paper.

Knowledge of Conventions is understanding how and when to use specific style techniques
either when speaking or writing. For example, when writing a job application, one has to use
proper grammar and correct spelling to be counted credible and sound adequate for the position.
When I created a job application, I was descriptive with my word choice and organized my essay
in a chronological order starting with my background to my newest experiences. Knowing the
proper conventions allowed me to create an application suitable for the job.

Critical Reflection is necessary to understand how one views a situation or person and for one
to be able to grow as an individual. In the past when I would write reflective essays, it was a
great time to critic and grow on my skills. Also when writing reflections, I tend to reveal feelings
about a certain situation that I never addressed before, which is needed in order to understand
how the situation has impacted me.
