The accident that I am going to talk about took place in April, 2015. It was a ship that
wanted to go out to fish when suddenly the ship started to catch fire; this whole situation
was in the seaport of Las Palmas, near other fishing boats and pleasure craft. By the
concern to set fire the rest of boats, the government decided to tow the ship that was
burning out to the sea until the fire was consumed. The danger appeared by the possibility
that the boat sank with 1400 tons of fuel, 30 of diesel and 60 of oil - usual amount for large
fishing vessels-; and before this a large fuel spills and discharges reach the coasts of the
archipelago.

Finally, although similar containment measures to those were taken in 2002 during the
Prestige tankers spill of 60 000 tonnes in the coasts of Galicia, however the measures
were not enough and the spill took place caused serious problems in the fauna, for
example some spotted dolphins and turtles, and in addition the spill reached some Canary
coasts like Tasarte or Taurito beaches.

While the whole crew was evacuated before the explosions began, I think that this
situation could have been avoided if they had used more and better means to extinguish
the fire when the ship was in the port. In addition, it was a mistake to tow the boat offshore,
because the currents diverted the ship to the south, and this is an area mainly tourist and
whose spill could bring economic consequences. On the other hand, mention should be
made of the delay intervention because it had communicate the incident between different
commanders which delayed the containment measures application, and also it was no
taken into account that the south of the island it is a step in the migration of protected
species such as the bottlenose dolphin.

In spite of everything, the accident served to apply new inspection measures in foreign
vessels which fishing in Canary Islands sea.
