Licensing Release Notes

Some of the changes in this release may affect how licensing works or how licensing is
managed. Changes of special note are:

Added a vendor-supplied fix to a security vulnerability in the license server (lmgrd) and
vendor daemon (mgcld).
Removed official support for license servers on Red Hat EL 5.

FlexNet Version
This version of the Mentor Graphics Standard Licensing (MSL) system uses FlexNet version
11.13.1.2 license server, vendor daemon, and vendor utilities. This version of MSL uses
FlexNet version 11.13.0.2 in the client runtime.

Customers must update the license servers (lmgrd) and vendor daemons (mgcld) to use this
release. The updated license server continues to support older applications without
modification. However, an application using this new version of licensing may not be able to
acquire licenses from older servers.

Each product released with FlexNet v11.13.1.2 contains everything you need for the license
server update. For details on updating your license server, search SupportNet at the following
web site for FlexNet v11.13.1.2 updates.

MGLS (UNIX/Linux) Changes

FlexNet Defects Fixed With v11.13.1.2

FlexNet v11.13.1.2 addresses the following issue:

FlexNet license server security vulnerability CVE-2015-8277 in lmgrd and mgcld

Mentor Graphics has incorporated Flexeras fix for the FlexNet license server security

MGLS (UNIX/Linux) Changes

Changes to Supported Platforms
v2015_1_patch2 no longer provides official support for license servers on the following
platform:

Red Hat EL 5
One consequence of using the patched FNP v11.13.1.2 server components is that Red Hat
Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5 is no longer officially supported by Flexera as a license server
platform. However, our RHEL 5 testing has not highlighted any problems with the FNP
v11.13.1.2 license server components.

Hardware Key/Dongle Drivers

Updating Older Dongle Drivers
If you are replacing older drivers (previous to FlexNet v11.11.1/PCLS v2013_2) with the
current versions, best practice is first to remove the older drivers before installing the new
drivers.

Known Licensing Problems

Lmgrd license server as a Windows service fails to start
In FlexNet Publisher 2015 (11.13.1), a change was made to run Windows license server
services with LocalService privileges instead of LocalSystem privileges, following the
least-privilege security best practice. One inappropriate consequence is that an lmgrd
Windows service, as installed by lmtools.exe, may not start. The reason is that a
LocalService does not, by default, have sufficient privileges to write the server debug
log to a subdirectory of Windows Program Files or Users directories (FNP-11460, FNP-
11446, FNP-11431, FNP-11393).
Therefore, Flexera recommends following the Windows best practice for writing
application data by specifying debug log and report log locations within a subfolder of
%SystemDrive%\ProgramData\. A LocalService does, by default, have sufficient
privileges to write to ProgramData subdirectories (FNP-11500).
