Oursolutionistocreatearesourcethatcanmapandnavigateideologies,religiousor
otherwise,withthehopeofmovingsomepeopleoffMountStupidwhilstalsohelping

otherstounderstandandinterprettheirideologiesandbeliefsinapeaceful,positive way.

Thiswhitepaperwilllayoutthestructuralandtechnologicalimplementation,and
explainhowblockchaintechnologyenablesAnanastobuildatoken/cryptocurrency
fortheplatform.Anacoin,withitsuniqueproperties,willallowustoscaletheplatform
byincentivisingengagementandbuildourdataonproofofsocialproof.
Thisnewapproachmaybeofparticularinteresttocharitiestoserveasanexampleofa
novelfundingmechanismforthoseengagedinbuildingprojectsoftruevalue.

WhatisAnanas?
Ananasisanonprofitfoundationcommittedtopromotingpeaceandfightinghate
throughtechnology.
Wearebuildinganinteractiveplatformthatmodelstheontologiesofideologies,
providingeasytousetoolsthatcanbeusedtobetterunderstandkeytexts.Our
platformcreatesauthoritativeresourcesaroundwhichcommunitiescangatherand
ouraimforthefutureistomakeaccuratedigitaltextsaccessibletoeveryone.
Wearedoingthisbecausetheinformationageisthreateningtofallintoanageof
misinformation.Fakenewsandalternativefactsseemmorepopularthanpeaceand
truth.Aneweraofunderstandingisrequired.
Mostpressingly,theInternetisfailingthosewhoseekreliableinformationonIslam.
Ourfirstproject,theLivingQuran,willtackletheriseofIslamicextremism.This
projectallowspeopletodigintothecoretextofIslam,gethelpfromknowledgeable
individualsandmakebetterinformeddecisionsabouttheirownbeliefs.
ButIslamandtheQuranisjustthefirststep.Intime,wewillmapalltheworldsmajor
texts,fromtheQurantotheBibletotheUSConstitution.Weaimtohelppeoplefrom
allovertheworlddevelopbalancedbeliefsthroughconstructivedialoguewithothers.
Wearepromotingpeaceandfightinghatethroughcooperationandunderstanding.
Ananasisrunbyaninter-faithteamfromdiverseculturalandprofessional
backgrounds.Weallshareacommonaimtofighthatebybuildingandsupporting

SincetheriseofISISin2013,wehaveseenanexplosionofviolenceinSyriaandacross
theworld,with698terrorattacksin2017alone.1Thishasbeenaccompaniedbyaslick
mediapresenceonthepartofterroristsandincreasinglysophisticatedtacticsto
spreadterrorandincreasefear.
ISISisnottheonlyextremistgroupgainingground.Itexistsinasymbioticrelationship
withthefar-right,whosexenophobicagendahascoalescedaroundahatredof
immigrants,refugeesandIslam,stancesthathaveincreasinglybecomenormalisedand
partofmainstreamdiscourse,eventhoughMuslimsarethemainvictimsofterror.This
fitsintothekeygoalofISIS-toeliminatethegreyzoneofcoexistenceandharmony
betweenMuslimsandthoseofotherbeliefsbystokingmutualdistrustandhate.
Everydaywecanseethesharpsplitsinsocietybetweenliberalsandconservatives
widening,withcriesoffakenewsaugmentedbysocialmediafilterbubbles.Extremism
isrisingworldwide,fromthemurderofRohingyaMuslimsinMyanmarbyBuddhiststo
increasingnationalismandapushbackagainstglobalisationandinternational
cooperation.Religionisoftenco-optedtofurtherextremepoliticalagendas,but
capitalismandcommunismhavelefttheirfairshareofbrokenlivesandbodies.
Afterthreeyearsofindependentandunbiasedresearchbyprivateindividuals,we
believethebestapproachisprovidingcontextualinformationandresourcestocombat
theillusionofsuperioritythatisattheheartofallformsofextremism.
Properaccesstocontextualinformationalsohelpsaugmentthepositivecontribution
ofbeliefsystemsandcommunities,bringingpeopletogetherforlaudablegoals.We
believethattheAnanasplatformcanhelpwiththisgoal.
Theillusionofsuperiorityistheunifyingfactorinextremism.Almostalwaysitcomes
aboutduetoanillusionofsuperioritycausedbyimperfectknowledge.
Whenconfrontedwithcontextualknowledgeorgettingtoknowthosethatthey
despise,thesepeopletypicallyundergoimmensecognitivedissonanceandadisavowal
oftheirpriorpositions.ThisphenomenonisavariantoftheDunning-Krugereffect,
asillustratedinFigure1.Whenindividualsgainalittleknowledge,theyoftenvastly

over-inflatetheirperceptionoftheirownconfidence.Thepeakofconfidenceinthis
graphisoftenknownasMountStupid.
Ineverydaylifethisissimplyannoying,asnewsheadlinesmakeinstantexpertsofus
all.Butwhencombinedwithpoliticalaimsandopaqueprinciples,thiscanbecome
deadlyasextremefaithinthebeliefthatyouringroupissuperiortotheoutgroup,
whichisseenasathreatandlessthanhuman,isacorecomponentofatrocities.

TheDunning-KrugerEffectshowsthatasyoulearnmore,yourconfidencelevelsoften
drop,whichiswhymultiplestudieshaveshownthatoneofthebestinnoculations
againstreligiousextremismisactuallyasolidreligiouseducationandidentity.
Whenanalysingextremistsofanycloth,itbecomesclearthattheygainsuccessby
bringingasmanypeopletoMountStupidaspossiblebypaintingapicturewithout
reasonabledoubt.Thisisusuallydonebypresentingkeyevidenceandviewsthatare
selectiveandlackingincontext.
Itiscontextthatisincrediblyimportant.Indeed,informationwithoutcontextcannot
bethoughtofasknowledge(knowledgecomeswheninformationismixedwith
experience).Thusitisessentialtohavealltheevidencebeforemakingadefinitive
statementaboutanideologyorlawandawaytobalancealltheavailableevidencein
asobjectiveamanneraspossible,whileacknowledginghowfarsubjectivitycango.
Thisisalsorelatedtothegenesisofthefakenewsphenomenon,whichreliesona

lackofcontextandfeedingintopre-conceivednotions,oftenestablishedinafilter
bubble,inbothdirections.
Factcheckingishelpfulbut,toreallymakeprogress,weneedtogobeyondthefactsby
analysinghowfactsleadtoopinionsandwhichofthoseopinionsareinternally
consistentornot.

HowdoesAnanaswork?
Societyisfilledwithanimmensediversityofculturesandcommunities,eachwith
uniquewaysoflookingattheworld,ofhowthingsworkandshouldbe.Whilethiscan
enrichculture,moderntimeshaveshownthesedifferencescanalsoleadtoconflict.
AtAnanaswearebuildingaplatformtopromoteunderstandingofyourown
communityorthatofothersandwebelievethatthebestwaytounderstandothersis
tosimplytalktothem.Whileyoumightstartwithaverydifferentviewoftheworld,if
youfindacommonlanguageandperspective,youcanusuallygetafarbettergraspof
theirviewsthanreadingsomethinglackingincontextfromanunverifiedsource.
Partofourplatformisdesignedtoconnectuserswithreallifeindividualsfromdefined
communities,aswellasconnectingwithexpertsinkeyareas.Toaugmentthisweare
alsoprovidingadigitalresourcetoaccesscontextualinformation.
WearealsoofferingusersaframeworkthatthelikesofGoogleandFacebookhave
builtfromyourdatatotargetyouforadverts.Wewillusethisframeworktofacilitate
mutualunderstandingandknowledge.Todothis,wehadtocreateastructurethatwas
comprehensive,up-to-dateandauthoritative.
Asideologicalhategrowsworldwide,ithasbecomeclearthatfactsarenotenoughon
theirown.Weneedtoprovidecontextwhereverpossibleandavenuewithsufficient
authoritythatawiderangeofgroupscanacceptasunbiased.Thisisadifficulttask,but
webelieveachievableusingourconceptofobjectivesubjectivity.
ThisisquitedifferentfromGoogle,whichranksinformationbasedonpopularity,or
Wikipedia,whichhasastrongobjectiveeditorialstance.Beliefsandideologiesare
inherentlysubjectiveand,whileacademicsandthosefromoutsidethesecommunities
candovalidandincrediblyinterestinganalysisfromadifferentpointofview,nobody
canprovidethekindofuniqueperspectiveprovidedbymembersofthatcommunity.
Thisisimportantaseveryindividualispartofanumberofcommunities.Youcanhave
yournation,yourtribe,yourreligion,yoursportsteams.Humansareuniqueinthe
commonbeliefs,thehistories,thestories,thatwetellandshare.Theyallowusto
organiseandcometogetheracrossgeneticdifferences.Theinternethasaccentuated
thisbyallowingustoformtribesinstantlyacrosstheworld.
Oncewelookedattheprobleminthiscontext,thestructureforAnanasbecameclear.

1.AnanasCommunity
Ourcommunityareaisdesignedtorewardparticipationandbringtogether
like-mindedindividualsofvaryinglevelsofexpertise,withdiversebackgroundsand
perspectivestoreclaimcontrolonideologieswhicharetoooftenvulnerableto
distortionandprejudice,andbeingusedasatoolformanipulation.
Whilstthereisafreedomtopresentoneselfasanonymousontheplatform,
communitieshavetheoptiontochooserepresentativestohelpothers,helpingand
teachingboththoseinsideandoutsidetheircommunity.Thisreflectsthepowerof
genuineinteractionwithothersinfosteringharmonyandmutualunderstanding.

2.AnanasDataPlatform
TheAnanasDataPlatformiswhereanyonecancreateorcollateinformationwith
respecttoagivencommunityorideology.OurfirstfocusisIslamanditscoretextthe
Quran,sotheframeworkistheQuranitselfindigitalformat,allofthechapters,verses,
wordsandlettersthatmakeitup.WeintendtobuildtheLivingQuran.
Thegoalistogathereverypieceofdigitalandrealliferesourceconnectedtothese
elementsandattachthemtotheLivingQuran.AnyholderofAnacoinscandothis,
whichallowscommunitiestosponsortheirownviewpointsonanyareaoftheQuran
oranythingtodowithit.Thissoundslikearecipefordisaster,buttheinformationin
thisareaisonlyavailabletothoseparticipatinginitscreation.Whattheendconsumer
seesissomethingquitedifferent,itisthedistilledandrefinedviewsofeach
communitychosenbythemtoreflecttheirownsubjectivity.
Forexample,theSalaficommunity,representedbyindividualstheAnanasFoundation
checkorchoosetoberepresentative,couldselectinterconnectedresourcesto
representtheirownviewsonvariousaspectsoftheQuran,forexamplecertain
translationsorcommentariesinlinewiththeirworldview.TheTurkish
government-sponsoredDirectorateofReligiousAffairs(Diyanet)wouldselecta
differentsetofinterconnectedresources.AlAzharUniversityinCairowouldhaveyet
adifferentset.Thesesetsneednotrepresentasingleview,butcouldincludearange
ofacceptableinterpretationsasdeterminedbythatcommunity,rankedastheyseefit.
Ifthereisdisagreementwithinacommunity,thiscaneasilybereflectedbyadigital
platformandcheckedagainstsupportfromreallifecommunities.Iftheycantexist
withinthesamebroaddataset,itcanbesplitintotwoseparatesetsgovernedbyeach
respectivebranchofthecommunityundertheFoundationsguidelines.
TheAnanasFoundationisnottheretojudgewhoisrightandwhoiswrong,butwhois
representative.Aslongastheviewsineachdatasetdonotadvocateillegalactsor

chargeforenlightenmentandareconstructedunderourguidelines,weacceptthem
foruseintheconsumerapplications.
ThismeanspartsoftheDataPlatformcanbestate-sponsored,scholar-created,
individualcreatedoranonymouslycreated.Theoriginsofeachcomponentcanbe
trackedandcommunitiescanpickandchoosewhattheytakeandwhotheyreward.In
return,Ananasgetsanincrediblyrich,flexible,andbroaddataseriestobuildon,a
comprehensiverecordthatrapidlybecomesmoreindepththananythatexisttoday.
Whereweidentifyinformationislacking,whethermanuallyorinferredbyour
algorithms,theFoundationwillsponsorresearchandcontentcreationandcollation,
drawingontheinputofourgrowingrosterofadvisorswhoareexpertsintheirfield.
Weexpectcommunitydatasetstostartoutsimple,butrapidlyiterateandimproveas
morelearnedmembersofthatcommunityjoinandcrosschecktheinformation,aswell
asscholarsandexpertsinthatfield.Aseachcommunitygatherssteamand
contributors,theabilityoftheplatformtostayuptodate,helpedbybeingabletorefer
backtothecommunityareaandincomingrequests,improves.
Theplatformalsobecomesmoreauthoritativewithincreasingcontentandusage,
muchasmanynowtrustGoogleandWikipediaastheirfirstportofcallforfinding
information.Asindividualsusetheconsumerapplicationsfortheirowngroupsandthe
communityfunctionstointeractwithothersofasimilarbackgroundintermsof
learningorenquiry,theirtrustlevelintheplatformwithrespecttoaccessingcontent
fromothergroupswillgrow,furtherincreasingauthority.
Forexample,ifaJewishindividualusestheplatformtointeractwithmembersofhis
communityandaccessdigitalresourcesonJudaism,heismorelikelytogivecredence
totheinformationtheplatformpresentsonIslam.Thismodelallowsforobjectivity
subjectivityontheplatformandforcommunitiestopolicetheirowndatasetsfor
digitaldispersion.Itallowsthemtotelltheirownstories.

3.Consumerapplications
Dataismostvaluablewhentiedtocontextandpresentedassimplyaspossible.If
someonewantstoreadandunderstandtheQuran,atthemomenttheiroptionsare
seeingtranslationsonexcellentwebsiteslikeQuran.comorQuranx.com,reading
articlesoranalysesfromwebsitesofuncertainprovenance,orfindingaMuslimwho
mayhavesomeknowledgefromoneofthemanysectstotakethemthroughit.
Furthermore,theymaywishtoreaditfortheirowninterest,ortounderstandhow
Muslimsofacertaingroupseeit,twopurposesthatcanleadtoverydifferentpaths.
AtAnanaswewanttomakeinformationwithcontextasaccessibleaspossibleandso
foreachideologywemodel,webelievethereneedstobeaspecialisedapplicationor
seriesofapplications.Webelievethisthreepartstructureandprocessfor

incorporatingtherightcontextualinformationwillcreatesomethingoftruevalue.The
datathatthiscreateswillallowforabetterunderstandingofhowideologyworkson

Thenatureoftheplatformmakesitextendabletoimproveavarietyof
context-dependentfields,potentiallycreatinganewresourcetopiercefilterbubbles
andideologicalpolarisation,toemphasiseknowledgeoverinformation.

Islamophobia,allowingpeoplefromallovertheworldtodigintothecoretextofIslam,
gethelpfromknowledgeableindividualsandmakebetterinformeddecisionsabout
theirownbeliefs.

Itisdifficulttousereasonwhenpeoplehavebeenpersuadedtojoinextremistgroups,
wheretheyarepsychologicallyandphysiologicallybrainwashed.Itiseasiertodisrupt
theprocessofradicalisationbyremovingtherampsthatleadtherebyprovidingmore
contextandasuperior,authoritativeresource.Thishasbecomepossibleinthe
smartphoneageasournewsourcesoftrust,asidefromourfilterbubbles,have
becomeWikipediaandGoogle.
Wehaveincorporatedhowthesesourcesbecametrusted,aswellasmorespecific
onesliketheStanfordEncyclopediaofPhilosophy,tocreatethestructureforAnanas
tobecomeagenuinelyusefulandtrustedsourceviahelpfromacommunity.
Thereisaneedforanindependent,trustedsourceofsubjectiveinformationto
deconstructradicalideologyanddefeatextremismwhileeducatingthepublicand
helpingthemwiththeirunderstanding,bothwithinandoutsideofthegroup.
TotackleIslamicextremism,wearegoingtothecoretextandfoundationofIslam,
theQuran,tocreateasuperiorresourceinastructuredmannerthatfulfilsthree

characteristics:itiscomprehensive,up-to-dateandauthoritative.Thissuperior
resourcewillbecalledtheLivingQuran.
ToachieveourgoalstherearethreestagesthattheAnanasplatformwillprogress
throughinthenextyear.

Stage1:Communityorganisation
Tobesuccessful,Ananaswillhavetoengagewithawiderangeofindividualswhoare
alignedwithourgoalsandwishtohelp.Thisisthecorereasonforourtokensale,and
wehavenearlyfinalisedthestructureforourmoderatedonlinecommunitythatwill
bringmotivated,knowledgeableMuslimandnon-Muslimstogether.
Overtimethiswillopentoanevenwideraudience,providingasafespacetoengage
withmorelearnedindividualsinastructuredmanner,aswellastoallowthosewho
wanttouseourunstructureddataforanalytics,whetherpositivelyornot,toengage
witheachother(apologeticsareinevitable).
Thecommunitywillnotbejustanotherforumonlinebutratheraprojectonalarge
scalethatinvitestheworldtouniteforasocialcause.Anacoinswillbetherewardfor
activecommunityengagementanddevelopment,withcoinholdersalsobeingableto
voteoncertainissues.

Stage2:Flexibledigitalframework
Shortlyafterthelaunchofthewiki,wewillbegeneratinginformationtobuildthe
dynamicLivingQuran,adigitalframeworkthatincorporatesalltheinformationwecan
findoneachverseandchapteroftheQuran,aswellascommissioningnewresearch
andresourcesasdecidedbythefoundationandcommunity.
Theprincipleofthisistogatherasmuchunstructureddataaspossiblethrough
crowdsourcedcreationandcollationinastandardisedformatandthenallowthisdata
tobeputintoastructured,contextualformthroughthecommunitycategorisingitand
connectingitforrewardontheplatform.
Thiswillleadtomultiplestructureddatasetsfromthevarioussub-communities,but
anoveralldatasetthatrapidlybecomessuperiortothecurrentavailableresources,
withnewresourcesandresearchsponsoredbyAnanas.Individuals,corporationsand
governmentswillbeabletosponsorchapters,versesandbespokeresearchthrough
donationsandpurchaseofAnacoins.

Stage3:Customisedapplications
Thisstructureddatasetwillbepresentedtousersthroughawebsiteandmobile
applicationknownasthetheLivingQuran:afree,comprehensiveresourcethatallows
individualsfromanybackgroundtodiginasmuchdepthastheywantintothecore
textofIslam,fromdeconstructingtheArabictoreadingnew,translated
commentaries.
Particularlycontentiousverseswillreceivethemostattention,andthecommunitywill
alsobeavailabletodiscussandbetterunderstandelementsfromahumanperspective.
ThisgoesfarbeyondcurrentQuranapps,whichsimplyofferArabicandtranslations
withoutcontext,creatingasuperiorexperienceforall.

Stage4:Modellingideology
IslamisourinitialfocusasweaimtocombatterrorismandIslamophobia,aswellas
help1.6billionMuslimsintheirlives.However,theframeworkcanbeusedtomodel
anyreligionorideologyoncethereisacriticalmassofinterestandacommunitythat
wantstocreateandcollatetheappropriateresources.Theaimistostandardiseeach
datasetandtheontologyofeachideology,thesetofconceptsandcategorieswithin
theideologyandtherelationsbetweentheseconceptsandcategories.
Ifbuiltcorrectly,thisstandarddatasetisamenabletoadvanceddataanalyticsand
processing,particularlypairedwithcognitiveartificialintelligencethathassemantic
understanding.Thismakesiteasiertocheckontheinternalconsistencyofanyposition
withinacertainsetofparametersandincreasedcustomisationforeachusers

experiencewithintheirideologyandwhenviewingothers.Forexample,oncethe
basicshavebeenputinacommonformat,achildinEgyptcouldlearnaboutJudaism
fromtheperspectiveofIslam,orviceversaforachildinTelAviv.Thisisincredibly
powerful,andtheadditionalideologieswemapandcontextualisewillbedetermined
bythecommunity.
Asthedataincreasesacrosstheplatform,weplanonusingAItoenhancehowit
providestherightpiecesofinformationattherighttime,whilealwaysretainingthe
optionofconnectingusersoftheconsumerapplicationstoreallifeindividualsat
various,confirmed,levelsofexpertise.
Ifthereareanyproblemswithanycontent,itcanbeinstantlyfedbackthroughthe
communityandadjustedontheDataPlatform.WhiletheFoundationwillallowalarge
