Column Design

A Column (C12) taken as a sample of calculation, the column is located at ground

floor , the column is intermediate column with 3 m height, the height

of the above= 3. m

1. Check if building is braced against side-sway or not braced:

Despite these suggestions from the ACI, the individual designer is going to
have to make decisions as to what is adequate bracing and what is not,
depending on the presence of structural walls and other bracing items. For
the average-size reinforced concrete building, load eccentricities and
slenderness values will be small, and frames will be considered to be
braced.

Frame is considered to be braced depending on its average size and

small values of eccentricities and existence of shear wall.

2- Check if column is uniaxial loaded column or biaxial:

Mx = 36.7 kN.m
My = 27.5 kN.m

Evaluate the factored axial ultimate load Pu acting on column

This is can be done by:

A. Tributary area method
B. Pu is the sum of the reaction of the beams supported by the column.

Use method B to determine Pu Pu = 1833.55 kN

ex = = 0.02

ey= = 0.015

if > 0.2 bi-axil : else its uniaxial

= 0.75 so, its biaxial

Check Design :
21.2Strength reduction factors for structural concrete members and connections
21.2.1 Strength reduction factors shall be in accordance with Table 21.2.1

For Tied column = 0.65

is a reduction factor to account for (accidental) minimum eccentricity, e,

According to ACI Code a factor: for Tied columns: = 0.80

The design load capacity

Pn =Ag[0.85Fc+ g(Fy-0.85Fc)] = 2355 kN > Pu Ok!

22.4.2.1 Nominal axial compressive strength Pn shall not exceed Pn,max in

accordance with Table 22.4.2.1, where Po is calculated by Eq. (22.4.2.2) for
nonprestressed members and composite steel and concrete members, and by Eq.
(22.4.2.3) for prestressed members.
22.4.2.2 For nonprestressed members and composite steel and concrete members,
Po shall be calculated by:

Po = 0.85fc(Ag Ast) + fyAst Po = 4603 kN

Pn max = 0.8Po = 3682 kN

Pn = 2820.85 kN < Pn max .. Ok

Design of ties :

Use ties 10 with spacing of ties shall not exceed the smallest of:

1- 48 times the diameter, 48 ds = 48 10 = 480 mm.

2- 16 times the longitudinal bar diameter 16 db = 16 16 = 256mm. Controls

3- The least dimension of the column = 300 mm.
Use ties 10 @ 250 mm

Check spacing S = = = 3.82 cm
