Em nossa vida diria, nos deparamos com grande variedade de textos
escritos, textos esses que realizam diversas funes: alguns so anncios,
outros so placas informativas, outros rtulos de produtos, outros letrei-
ros, outros e-mails, outros mensagens instantneas, enfim, h uma vasta
gama de textos que fazem parte de nossa vida.

Fairy tales
Once upon a time down on an old farm, lived a duck family, and Mother Duck had been
sitting on a clutch of new eggs. One nice morning, the eggs hatched and out popped six
chirpy ducklings. But one egg was bigger than the rest, and it didnt hatch. Mother Duck
couldnt recall laying that seventh egg. How did it get there? Tock! Tock! The little prisoner
was pecking inside his shell.
Did I count the eggs wrongly? Mother Duck wondered. But before she had time to think
about it, the last egg finally hatched. A strange looking duckling with gray feathers that
should have been yellow gazed at a worried mother. The ducklings grew quickly, but
Mother Duck had a secret worry. (ANDERSEN, 2008)
Newspaper articles
As Chen Fuxing tells it, the Golden Ventures odyssey to America was a trial of desperation
and fear. The lack of food, water, light and space broke the 300 travelers down and a kind
of Darwinian order took shape. The weaker ones, who typically got the last scraps of a
daily meal of rice and water, would argue and beg for more, with disputes erupting into
brawls among the passengers. People fell sick, but without any medicine others would
feel helpless and leave them alone.
Mr. Chens voyage to America began nearly two years ago. He set out from a rural village in
southeastern China, where busy meant a 10hour day on the familys rice farm. He trekked
through the mountains of Myanmar and Thailand, slept in an airless cabin the size of a
small bathroom with three other people on one ship, and eventually became a virtual
prisoner on the Golden Venture, which the authorities say was used to transport Chinese
immigrants who paid as much as $35,000 each for the voyage to America. Unwelcome

A fim de responder essa pergunta, que tal observarmos o que os textos rea-
lizam? Bem, podemos notar que ambos contam uma histria, relatam uma se-
quncia de fatos, localizando os eventos no tempo e/ou no espao. Levando
em conta o que j conhecemos a respeito de tipos textuais, j podemos v-los
como textos narrativos e, por aproximao, relativos ao modo de organizao
narrativo.
Formas enunciativas
Assim sendo, dependendo do posicionamento do enunciador, podemos de-
preender sua aproximao ou distanciamento com relao ao interlocutor, da

Enunciao em primeira,
segunda e terceira pessoas
Ao lermos um texto, construmos uma representao do produtor do texto,
do enunciador. Essa imagem depende bastante da maneira como ele se posicio-
na com relao ao leitor, ao texto e ao contexto. Em alguns momentos, temos a
percepo de que o enunciador se expressa de maneira subjetiva, dando-nos
certa impresso de proximidade:

Elementos da descrio
De maneira geral, operamos descries a fim de familiarizar o leitor com de-
terminadas caractersticas de determinado objeto ou cena. Alguns elementos
comuns de descries so: referncia, caracterizao, localizao e dimensiona-
mento. Sabemos que a posio do descritor tambm determinante na narrati-
va, pois nos permite entender mais a respeito de seu foco.

Elementos da narrao
Elementos imprescindveis da narrao so personagens e enredo (ao). O
cenrio tambm um elemento importante, embora no essencial. A fim de ilus-
trarmos o funcionamento desses elementos em uma pequena narrativa, obser-
varemos uma nursery rhyme1 chamada Old Mother Hubbard:
Plot3: went to the cupboard to give her dog a bone, but the cupboard was empty,
so she didn t give it a bone.

Elementos da argumentao
Ao escrever um texto argumentativo, um autor geralmente est definindo
sua opinio a respeito de determinado estado de coisas e tentando persuadir
seu leitor com relao s posies colocadas. Quando escrevemos um texto ar-
gumentativo (como uma letter to the editor), estamos nos expressando a respeito
de determinada posio que temos acerca do mundo.

Tipos de argumentao
A argumentao demonstrativa estrutura-se em torno de fatos supostamen-
te observveis e relacionados a aspectos condizentes com uma ordem logica-
mente compreensvel, associados objetividade. Esse tipo de argumentao
comumente encontrado em textos cientficos.

Trata-se de uma descrio que apresenta outra cor, que cria outra atmosfera
para a notcia que vem a seguir. O tom avermelhado reddish-dirt nos d indcios
a respeito do restante da notcia. Da mesma maneira que uma foto, a descrio
espacial tem como objetivo principal fornecer ao leitor algumas caractersticas
do lugar em questo, para que ele possa construir com essas pistas a imagem
mental do cenrio ao qual nos referimos.

Referncias realidade
Outro aspecto essencial de uma descrio espacial a referncia realidade.
Em uma descrio do espao, ela essencial para a criao de um texto veros-
smil. Mesmo para a criao de uma cena fantstica, o escritor se ampara nas
referncias da realidade que o leitor j conhece, a fim de criar a fantasia. No texto
apresentado anteriormente, essas referncias so feitas com a meno de aspec-
tos da localizao geogrfica do local.
A low, soft hooting came from a dark shop with a sign saying Eeylops Owl Emporium
Tawny, Screech, Barn, Brown, and Snowy. Several boys of about Harrys age had their
noses pressed against a window with broomsticks in it. Look, Harry heard one of
them say, the new Nimbus Two Thousand fastest ever There were shops selling
robes, shops selling telescopes and strange silver instruments Harry had never seen
before, windows stacked with barrels of bat spleens and eels eyes, tottering piles of
spell books, quills, and rolls of parchment, potion bottles, globes of the moon []
(ROWLING, 1997)
A autora parte de uma locao que nos familiar (a de uma loja em um beco)
e, a partir desse elemento, introduz os elementos fantsticos1 (em negrito no
texto), que apesar de no existirem em nossa realidade material da forma que
so dispostos na descrio, compem um cenrio completamente inteligvel
para ns leitores.

Descrio objetiva
A descrio objetiva trata de um processo de referncia realidade material,
e o que guia a seleo dos detalhes a serem apresentados a coisa (o objeto)
em si. Nesse tipo de descrio, o autor assume o papel de relator da realidade,
cujo foco se encontra em descrever o cenrio observado com grande fidelidade
ao que observa. Dessa maneira, comum que em uma descrio dessa natureza
figurem observaes relativas s dimenses, peso, cor, odor, gosto etc., as quais
so factualmente comprovveis. Para compreendermos melhor o que esse tipo
de descrio tem como modelo, basta lembrarmos do movimento naturalista
da literatura, no qual os autores guiados pela atmosfera positivista das cincias
da poca buscavam construir suas descries tendo como base o mtodo de
registro das cincias biolgicas e exatas. Era comum o uso de nomes cientficos
e vocabulrio tcnico.
The loach, in its general aspect, has a pellucid appearance: its back is mottled with
irregular collections of small black dots, not reaching much below the linea lateralis, as
are the back and tail fins: a black line runs from each eye down to the nose; its belly is of a
silvery white; the upper jaw projects beyond the lower, and is surrounded with six feelers,

Observe quantos termos especficos foram usados nessa descrio (em ne-
grito). Ao descrever todos os detalhes do peixe, parece-nos que o autor busca
construir uma foto do peixe mencionado, descrevendo suas nadadeiras, seu ta-
manho, suas cores com preciso cirrgica.
Podemos dizer que nesse tipo de texto o foco se encontra no objeto. O autor
tenta depreender quais os detalhes imprescindveis para a compreenso do
objeto, quais os elementos que o diferenciam dos outros e o que o leitor pre-
cisa apreender para construir simbolicamente a imagem que o autor observa e
descreve.

base na tabela e na descrio fornecida que, apesar de o nvel de desenvolvi-
mento humano no Brasil e na Albnia ser o mesmo, o Produto Interno Bruto (per
capita) maior no Brasil.
Useful Language
Como j observamos nos exemplos mencionados, a escolha lingustica bas-
tante importante na produo de uma descrio objetiva. A fim de ampliarmos
seu conhecimento lingustico na rea, selecionamos alguns aspectos importan-
tes observveis nesse tipo de descrio: a utilizao de verbos de ligao que
constroem relao de identidade, expresses usadas para definir aspectos natu-
rais de um cenrio e expresses usadas para descrever construes.

Descrio subjetiva
Em contraste com a descrio objetiva, a subjetiva constri a realidade para o
leitor com base nas sensaes e impresses que o autor seleciona, e sua relao
com tal objeto. Em outras palavras, podemos dizer que esse tipo de descrio
trata de como o autor se sente com relao a determinado cenrio.
Em contraponto foto que a descrio objetiva constri da realidade, a
descrio subjetiva aproximar-se-ia de uma ilustrao (ou, em alguns casos, de
uma caricatura) da realidade; cria-se uma nova realidade baseada em impresses
do autor, que por meio de impresses recria um ambiente. No exemplo abaixo,
Katherine Mansfield descreve uma praa pelos olhos de uma senhora idosa:
Two young girls in red came by and two young soldiers in blue met them, and they
laughed and paired and went off arm-in-arm. Two peasant women with funny straw hats
passed, gravely, leading beautiful smoke-coloured donkeys. A cold, pale nun hurried
by. A beautiful woman came along and dropped her bunch of violets, and a little boy
ran after to hand them to her, and she took them and threw them away as if theyd been
poisoned. Dear me! Miss Brill didnt know whether to admire that or not! And now an
ermine toque and a gentleman in gray met just in front of her. He was tall, stiff, dignified,
and she was wearing the ermine toque shed bought when her hair was yellow. Now
everything, her hair, her face, even her eyes, was the same colour as the shabby ermine,
and her hand, in its cleaned glove, lifted to dab her lips, was a tiny yellowish paw. Oh, she
was so pleased to see himdelighted! She rather thought they were going to meet
that afternoon. (MANSFIELD, 1922, p. 185-186)

importante lembrar que nenhuma das formas de descrio pode ser con-
siderada mais verdadeira que a outra. Embora a descrio subjetiva se baseie na
experincia e nas impresses de um indivduo, ela no necessariamente menos
correspondente realidade material do que uma descrio objetiva. necess-
rio sempre analisar as condies de produo do texto, a fim de compreender
quais elementos entram em jogo na sua construo, ou seja, para que o texto foi
escrito e com o intuito de defender qual ponto (ou quais pontos) de vista.

Metaphor
Dois recursos bastante utilizados na produo de textos so a metfora e a
smile. A metfora vem do grego metaphor, que significa transportar. Ela con-
siste em uma comparao no indicada entre elementos no necessariamente
relacionados. A utilizao de metforas empresta ao texto um novo colorido e
novas formas de interpretao, abrindo ao leitor um novo leque de possibilida-
des. Alguns exemplos de metforas so:
Little girls, little French dolls, dressed up in velvet and lace6. (MANSFIELD,
1922, p. 184)

Smile
A smile uma comparao explcita, com o emprego de expresses como
like e as. Ela pode ser empregada da mesma maneira que a metfora, abrindo
novas possibilidades de construo dos sentidos na descrio. Na lngua inglesa,
h muitas smiles que se popularizaram e transformaram-se em clichs, sendo
bastante utilizados. Listamos a seguir algumas dessas smiles:
as straight as a round-about.
as smooth as sandpaper.

To describe a process you must analyze its stages. The analysis will determine how you
organize the description. In a simple case, such as baking a cake, the process has obvious,
prescribed steps; the writer needs only to observe and record them accurately. On the other
hand, complicated and abstract processes for instance, how a law comes into being as an act
of Congress require more study and thought9. (KANE, 2000, 360)
Attend a Bloomsday celebration near you. Dublin has the biggest, but dozens of towns
throughout the United States and Canada have rousing ones. Many include marathon
readings of Ulysses, with local celebrities taking turns reading passages from the epic.
Take a tour of Dublins or all of Irelands literary shrines. Travel agencies, university
literature departments and Irish-American cultural groups offer them throughout the
year, with many scheduled to coincide with Bloomsday.
Hold a Ulysses party. Serve Irish food and drink, play Irish music and have your guests
take turns reading from the book.

pende largamente das tcnicas de cmera utilizadas; ou seja, de que forma o di-
retor nos permite adentrar a cena, se a observamos de longe e nos aproximamos
aos poucos, se temos ampla apreenso do espao ou se o vemos pelo buraco de
uma fechadura, ou uma lente desfocada. Essas so maneiras pelas quais a infor-
mao organizada visualmente, e nossas impresses se baseiam no apenas
no objeto de nossa observao (o que vemos), mas tambm na forma de nossa
observao (como vemos). J comentamos algumas implicaes dessas concep-
es na produo de descries objetivas e subjetivas, mas de que maneira a

Uma tcnica bastante utilizada a focalizao de um detalhe a ser explorado
ao longo da trama. No caso abaixo, a autora parte de uma imagem geral da pai-
sagem observada, posteriormente focando detalhes mais especficos. Nesse caso,
tambm podemos observar o que Kane chama de crystallizing image, ou seja, um
elemento importante que permeia a descrio, e que de certa forma chama nossa
ateno para sua ao. Observe o trecho abaixo e tente identific-lo:
Wuthering Heights is the name of Mr. Heathcliffs dwelling. Wuthering being a significant
provincial adjective, descriptive of the atmospheric tumult to which its station is exposed
in stormy weather. Pure, bracing ventilation they must have up there at all times, indeed:
one may guess the power of the north wind blowing over the edge, by the excessive slant
of a few stunted firs at the end of the house; and by a range of gaunt thorns all stretching

Ao falarmos de ns mesmos, realizamos diversas operaes discursivas e,
dependendo do contexto e do nvel de formalidade requerido, inclumos ou
deixamos de incluir diversas informaes. Entretanto, h duas operaes que
realizamos com bastante frequncia quando nos descrevemos: falamos sobre

Diariamente temos acesso a informaes provenientes dos mais diver-
sos meios, muitas vezes no tendo tempo para questionar as fontes ou
as formas de construo das notcias que consumimos. Voc j percebeu
que jornais diferentes noticiam o mesmo fato de maneiras diferentes?
Observe essa notcia a respeito de manifestaes de trabalhadores em
Lincolnshire:
Foreign Jobs Anger: A bitter dispute over the use of foreign workers
on a multimillion-pound construction project spread across the coun-
try today. (THE SUN, 2009)

Segundo Lasky, o jornalismo para os dias de hoje o que o romance foi para
o sculo XIX: a expresso do sentimento popular. Conhecemos a fora que a im-
prensa como um todo possui em nosso mundo altamente voltado para a in-
formao. E as artimanhas utilizadas na produo de seus textos muitas vezes
fabricam celebridades instantneas, que so consumidas vorazmente por meio
da mdia impressa; para isso, recorrem a meios bastante questionveis como,
por exemplo, os paparazzi, que seguem pessoas famosas nas mais diversas si-
tuaes muitas vezes criando de maneira relativamente fantstica furos de
reportagem, a partir de aes dirias e rotineiras.
Como voc j pde perceber, falar sobre a imprensa uma tarefa que pode

Essa uma experincia que nos mostra quanto conhecimento prvio ne-
cessrio para compreendermos uma notcia de jornal. Roger Fowler relata a po-
sio que o jornalista geralmente assume ao produzir uma notcia:
(O jornalista) coleta os fatos, os reporta de uma forma objetiva e o jornal os apresenta
de maneira justa e imparcial, em uma linguagem desenhada para no ser ambgua, no
distorcida e agradvel aos leitores. Este ethos2 profissional comum em todas as mdias:
imprensa, rdio e televiso, e geralmente o que os jornalistas afirmam ao tratar da questo.

Imprensa tradicional
Segundo Conboy, o que diferencia a imprensa tradicional (mainstream/hard
press) dos tabloides (brown press) , de uma maneira geral, o pblico-alvo.
A imprensa tradicional apresenta uma postura sria a respeito dos fatos, pro-
duzindo a iluso de objetividade e imparcialidade. Autores como Fowler e Lasky
discutem a questo da linha editorial assumida por cada veculo, mas convergem
para o ponto de que a grande predominncia nesse tipo de mdia a da lingua-
gem que visa a objetividade, construda com os recursos que j mencionamos.

Note que nem sempre todas essas perguntas so respondidas no lead das
notcias que lemos. Apesar dessa aura de seriedade envolvendo a imprensa tra-
dicional, muitos de seus produtos so duramente criticados por especialistas da
norma padro da lngua. Um exemplo bastante famoso o uso de split infinitives,
que foram (e ainda so) alvo de diversas discusses a respeito de sua existncia
gramatical. Basicamente, o split infinitive consiste na utilizao de um advrbio
entre o to e o verbo:
Ten arrested in pool party (Ao invs de: Ten were arrested in pool party)
Tabloides
Tabloides so jornais de linha predominantemente popular, direcionados
principalmente s classes menos favorecidas, que Conboy chama de ordinary
people (pessoas normais). Eles so menores que os jornais tradicionais, tendo
metade de seu tamanho. Tal tipo de produo jornalstica muito rentvel, es-
pecialmente na Inglaterra, e sua atratividade reside em sua especificidade nacio-
nal e lingustica. Segundo o autor, eles pertencem a, e para o bem ou para o mal,
representam a Gr-Bretanha contempornea para um pblico popular cuidado-
samente escolhido. Mas de que maneira os tabloides apelam para esse pblico?
Conforme Conboy, h algumas estratgias que foram utilizadas para tal fim:
Fazer uso de grande apelo visual (para atrair tambm os que no sabem ler).
Nos dias atuais, tabloides famosos como o ingls The Sun, tm como princi-
pais eixos temticos esportes, fofocas de celebridades e ocorrncias policiais.
Esse modelo de produo seguido em muitos lugares do mundo, inclusive
no Brasil, por jornais como o antigo Notcias Populares e os jornais Agora, Extra,

Useful language
As notcias a respeito de celebrities so, notadamente, as mais famosas prin-
cipalmente nos tabloides britnicos. A linguagem utilizada nesse tipo de texto
bastante especfica e pode fazer uso de expresses idiomticas, os idioms. A fim
de que voc se familiarize com esse tipo de linguagem e passe a utiliz-la em
seus textos, comentaremos alguns idioms utilizados para descrever caractersti-
cas fsicas, caractersticas de personalidade e aspectos da fama.

Smiles
Algumas smiles bastante populares so usadas para descrever pessoas. Ob-

Elementos da narrativa
De uma forma geral, a unidade bsica da narrativa a ao. Esta constitui a
essncia do modo de organizao discursivo narrativo. Veremos a seguir de que
maneira essa ao complementada por outros elementos.
Narrador
O narrador o contador de histrias, atravs de cujos olhos temos acesso
narrativa, da mesma maneira que o diretor de um filme faz os recortes de cena,
define os enquadramentos e escolhe o que contar e o que omitir. Assim o nar-
rador, que nos d acesso ao mundo da narrativa. Dependendo de sua posio, a
narrativa revelada de uma forma. Vejamos como isso pode acontecer:

Veja a proximidade com a qual a narrao realizada: temos acesso aos ques-
tionamentos que o narrador faz acerca de sua prpria sanidade, conversando
com o leitor (but why will you say that I am mad?). Ele comenta sua relao com o
mundo exterior, seus sentidos, como sua audio fica mais apurada e como ele
se prope a calmamente nos contar a histria.
I must have been about seven when my father left Porbandar for Rajkot
to become a member of the Rajasthanik Court. There I was put into a primary
school, and I can well recollect those days, including the names and other par-
ticulars of the teachers who taught me. As at Porbandar, so here, there is hardly

Enquanto a ao a matria-prima da narrativa, podemos dizer que o enredo
o produto final, mais elaborado e complexo. o encaixe de todos os elementos
que fazem essa ao acessvel ao leitor, incluindo a sequncia na qual os eventos
so contados (se a narrativa apresenta os fatos em ordem cronolgica, se inicia
no meio da ao e depois explica o que j se passou etc.), o tipo de relao exis-
tente entre eles (causa/consequncia, por exemplo) e a nfase dada a determi-
nados episdios.

Personagens (Characters)
Os personagens so os agentes da narrativa, aqueles que participam do de-
senrolar da ao narrada. Estes podem ser pessoas (Alice in Alice in Wonderland,
John in Dracula), animais (the rabbit in Alice in Wonderland) ou outros tipos de
entidade, como o vento ou o mar, entre outros. Os personagens podem ser clas-
sificados de acordo com diversos critrios, dos quais discutiremos dois.
Veja como a descrio dos ursos na fbula Goldilocks and the Three Bears
feita de maneira simplificada.
Once upon a time in a large forest, close to a village, stood the cottage

Cenrio (Setting)
O cenrio corresponde localizao espacial e temporal da narrativa. Ele
pode corresponder a um espao geogrfico e temporal bem localizado, como
a Ancient Greece, por exemplo, mas tambm a um tempo e espao indetermina-
dos, a long time ago, in a faraway realm. Em muitas narrativas, o cenrio funciona
como o indicador da atmosfera, dando pistas a respeito dos outros elementos.
The open window looked out upon a sloping lawn, well trimmed and
pleasant, with fuzzy rosebushes and a star-shaped bed of sweet-william. It
was bounded by a low wooden fence, which screened it off from a broad,
modern, new metaled road. At the other side of this road were three large
detached deep-bodied villas with peaky eaves and small wooden balconies,

A primeira ideia que nos vem, quando refletimos sobre isso, a de que
tal fato ocorre porque no somos capazes de abranger a personalidade do
outro com a mesma unidade com que somos capazes de abranger a sua con-
figurao externa. E conclumos, talvez, que esta diferena devida a uma
diferena de natureza dos prprios objetos da nossa percepo. De fato,
pensamos o primeiro tipo de conhecimento se dirige a um domnio finito,

Narrativa narrando um acontecimento
Conheceremos as operaes que realizamos no modo de organizao
discursivo narrativo, e trataremos de um gnero textual bastante popular
que realiza esse tipo de operao: o discurso jornalstico. Vivemos hoje
na sociedade da informao, na qual temos acesso a um volume de no-
tcias e conhecimento nunca antes vistos. Podemos acessar via internet
jornais de qualquer parte do mundo e ter acesso a notcias que seriam
secretas para ns h alguns anos atrs. Ao mesmo tempo, as notcias a
que temos acesso diariamente perecem cada vez mais rapidamente. Basta
pensar que na poca do jornal impresso as notcias demoravam um dia
para serem atualizadas. Com a televiso, essa velocidade aumentou e o
advento da notcia ao vivo surgiu, permitindo que tivssemos acesso a
acontecimentos em tempo real. J com o jornalismo digital essa velocida-
de ainda maior e temos uma atualizao de notcias quase que contnua.
Uma prova desse fenmeno a periodicidade de atualizao de grandes
portais de notcias.
A linguagem jornalstica
Voltemos nossa observao para a funcionalidade de um texto jornalstico, o
que o texto faz socialmente. De maneira geral, sua funo informar a respeito
de eventos acontecidos em um determinado tempo e espao1. De que forma
estaria ento a linguagem funcionando nesse contexto?

Caractersticas
A fim de manter seu estilo e consequentemente seu pblico, algumas regras
so seguidas na produo de narrativas jornalsticas. Segundo Ferry (2006), esse
tipo de narrativa segue as regras comuns ao que ele chama de boa prosa evi-
tando o uso excessivo de adjetivos e advrbios , optando pela voz ativa em
detrimento da passiva e evitando a conversa mole, j que precisa apresentar
grande quantidade de informao no menor espao possvel. Sabemos que o
jornal acaba por produzir efeitos de sentido mais complexos, alm da dita trans-
misso da informao; entretanto, neste momento focaremos nossa observao
nas caractersticas lingusticas desse tipo de produo. Em seu guia para jorna-
listas principiantes, Pape e Featherstone (2005, 48-62) listam algumas sugestes
para a produo de notcias, que resumidamente so:

te criticam a utilizao da voz passiva. Embora constantemente desvalorizada

Richard opens the play by declaring all in England is well, except with
himself. Richard III convinces Edward IV to send his own brother Clarence to
jail because his name starts with a G (George, Duke of Clarence). Hastings,
recently released from jail, and Richard go to see the sickly King Edward IV.
On the way, Richard III meets Anne Neville (Warwicks daughter), widow of
Edward, Henry VIs son, who is transferring Henry VIs body to his funeral.
They fight over the royals deaths. Richard III tells Anne that he killed them
because he loves her. He even gets her to like him. At the London palace

Richard Duke of York out of hiding and to him. Richard III sends Richard Duke
of York and his brother Edward V to the Tower of London to sleep, though
he, Buckingham, and Catesby plan to kill the boys and crown Richard III king.
In return, Richard III promises Buckingham land. Stanley dreams Richard III
beheads Hastings and tells him of it, but Hastings thinks nothing of it. Catesby
tries to convince Hastings to side with Richard III, but he refuses. All learn
that Rivers, Vaughn, and Grey have been executed at Pomfret castle (same
place as Richard II). At a meeting at the Tower, Richard III accuses Hastings of
treason and has him beheaded.

(Aunt of the princes Edward V and his brother Richard Duke of York) mourn
because Richard III imprisoned the princes in the Tower of London. Queen

VII), after Stanley brings news that Richard III plans to crown Anne Neville
queen, fulfilling Annes own curse that Richard IIIs future wife be cursed and
miserable.

him: Henry VIs son Edward; Henry VI; Richard IIIs brother Clarence; Rivers,

Investigating judge Keller
(THE NEW YORK TIMES, 2009)
Sharon Keller, a Texas appellate court judge, made headlines in 2007 when
she was reported to have ordered the court clerks office to close promptly at
5 p.m., preventing a death-row inmate from filing an emergency appeal. The
inmate was executed. A Texas legislator is now trying to impeach Judge Keller
for dereliction of duty in that case. A legislative inquiry is long overdue.
On Sept. 25, 2007, lawyers for Michael Richard were at work on a motion to
stay their clients execution. Earlier that day, the United States Supreme Court
announced that it would consider the constitutionality of lethal injection.
The lawyers were seeking to have Mr. Richards execution, which was to be
by lethal injection, put off until the Supreme Court issued its ruling.
According to press accounts, Mr. Richards lawyers called the court late that
afternoon to say they were having computer problems and requested that
the clerks office stay open 20 minutes past its usual closing time. According
to these accounts, Judge Keller denied the request. Mr. Richard was put to
death that evening.
Judge Keller has been quoted saying that Mr. Richards lawyers did not
give a reason for wanting the delay, and that she simply stated that the court
closes at 5 p.m.
If the facts are as reported, Judge Keller should be removed from the
bench. It would show monumental callousness, as well as a fundamental
misunderstanding of justice, for a judge to think that a brief delay in closing a
court office should take precedence over a motion that raises constitutional
objections to an execution. If the facts have been misreported, the
impeachment process would allow Judge Keller to set the record straight.

Pesquisa
Voc pode achar til realizar pesquisa dentro do tpico do qual tratar. A
natureza da pesquisa que voc realizar depende bastante de seu pblico. Em
textos acadmicos, h uma grande valorizao da citao de autoridades no as-
sunto, enquanto que em textos jornalsticos, de forma geral, prefere-se a citao
de eventos de conhecimento pblico. Uma boa estratgia para ajud-la/o em
sua pesquisa fazer perguntas sobre o tema e tentar respond-las. Se pensar-

A ideia que permeia a marcao das citaes nos textos a de que todo o

When farmers in our part of west Kenya heard through the mass media
about Jatropham curcas a tree with oil producing seeds capable of earning
precious income they decided to give it a try.
Farmer and local leader Steven Jarona, 33 and blin since he was 24, heard
about jatropha farming and decided to experiment. Steven has now grown a lot
of jatropha plants which have given very good yields. Since there is no proper
market at the moment, he has been selling the seeds to a local environmental
research institute called the Kenya Agro Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI),
being paid KES 3500 to KES 4000 per kg of Jatropha seeds sold.
Steven, despite his blindness, is now able to earn his own small income,
thanks to jatropha seeds. Interest grew among local farmers and young
people in Stevens village and they registered a group called Nam Lolwe
Jatropha Farmers with the district social services, Bondo. The group is now
made up of more than 100 members and has at 6,000 jatropha plants.
Fighting poverty and producing environment-friendly energy.
All these activities have been initiated by ARC Kenya a local develop-
ment NGO plus local farmers. Green Asembo finance a local credit scheme
is also an important partner in this project. Together with ARC Kenya they
have started the Green ARO community SACCO project, managed by Alex
Omino. They provide small loans to farmers interested in jatropha farming,
with money advanced to be paid back after a certain period.
The district administration from Bondo and Rarieda districts in Kenya have
visited the successful plantations. Nam Lolwe Jatropha Farmers Group is now

Various experiments on jatropha oil are being carried out by farmers with
some using the oil for medicinal purposes. One farmer says his son had a lot
of chiggers on his toes but when he applied jatropha oil, the chiggers were
reduced. Some farmers have also found that the bark of the jatropha plant
can be used as a raw material for dyeing clothes.
Since there is currently no ready market for jatropha oil in Kenya, farmers
are accumulating their seeds to increase production further. They are also
starting their own oil production and have won an order for 100 litres. If the
farmers are successful in their production methods it means they will be able
to have a vital source of income.
Meanwhile, a local self-help project in Asembo Bay, Kenya will receive the
first tractor with an engine modified specially for jatropha diesel later this year.
A Danish farmers association, after receiving some Jatropha oil for testing,
has been working on modifying the tractor engine. Successful planting of
jatropha has been taking place, production is increasing and poverty is being
reduced. We are all working hard to cultivate and experiment with this new
source of biodiesel, which is both affordable and environmentally friendly.

Jump performances of Ctenocephalides canis and Ctenocephalides felis felis have been
measured and compared on unfed young imagos. The mean length of the C. felis felis jump
was 19.99.1cm; minimum jump was 2cm, and the maximum was one 48cm. The C. canis

To see whether estrus was really lost during human evolution (as researchers often
claim), we examined ovulatory cycle effects on tip earnings by professional lap dancers
working in gentlemens clubs. Eighteen dancers recorded their menstrual periods, work
shifts, and tip earnings for 60 days on a study web site. A mixed-model analysis of 296
work shifts (representing about 5300 lap dances) showed an interaction between cycle
phase and hormonal contraception use. Normally cycling participants earned about
US$335 per 5-h shift during estrus, US$260 per shift during the luteal phase, and US$185
per shift during menstruation. By contrast, participants using contraceptive pills showed
no estrous earnings peak. These results constitute the first direct economic evidence for
the existence and importance of estrus in contemporary human females, in a real-world
work setting. These results have clear implications for human evolution, sexuality, and

The hearer must be either a judge, with a decision to make about things
past or future, or an observer. A member of the assembly decides about future
events, a juryman about past events: while those who merely decide on the
orators skill are observers. From this it follows that there are three divisions of
oratory-(1) political, (2) forensic, and (3) the ceremonial oratory of display.
Rhetoric has three distinct ends in view, one for each of its three kinds.
The political orator aims at establishing the expediency or the harmfulness
of a proposed course of action; if he urges its acceptance, he does so on the
ground that it will do good; if he urges its rejection, he does so on the ground
that it will do harm; and all other points, such as whether the proposal is
just or unjust, honourable or dishonourable, he brings in as subsidiary and
relative to this main consideration. Parties in a law-case aim at establishing
the justice or injustice of some action, and they too bring in all other points

an expedient one. The question whether it is not unjust for a city to enslave
its innocent neighbours often does not trouble them at all. In like manner
those who praise or censure a man do not consider whether his acts have
been expedient or not, but often make it a ground of actual praise that he
has neglected his own interest to do what was honourable. Thus, they praise
Achilles because he championed his fallen friend Patroclus, though he knew
that this meant death, and that otherwise he need not die: yet while to die
thus was the nobler thing for him to do, the expedient thing was to live on.
It is evident from what has been said that it is these three subjects, more
than any others, about which the orator must be able to have propositions at
his command. Now the propositions of Rhetoric are Complete Proofs, Proba-
bilities, and Signs. Every kind of syllogism is composed of propositions, and
the enthymeme is a particular kind of syllogism composed of the aforesaid
propositions. Since only possible actions, and not impossible ones, can ever
have been done in the past or the present, and since things which have not
occurred, or will not occur, also cannot have been done or be going to be
done, it is necessary for the political, the forensic, and the ceremonial speaker
alike to be able to have at their command propositions about the possible
and the impossible, and about whether a thing has or has not occurred, will
or will not occur. Further, all men, in giving praise or blame, in urging us to
accept or reject proposals for action, in accusing others or defending them-
selves, attempt not only to prove the points mentioned but also to show that
the good or the harm, the honour or disgrace, the justice or injustice, is great
or small, either absolutely or relatively; and therefore it is plain that we must
also have at our command propositions about greatness or smallness and
the greater or the lesser-propositions both universal and particular. Thus, we
must be able to say which is the greater or lesser good, the greater or lesser
act of justice or injustice; and so on.

Uma das faculdades que nos torna seres sofisticados em nosso raciocnio a

Incompatibilidade
Esse tipo de argumento trata da incoerncia de determinado sistema e pode
ser utilizado a fim de desqualificar contra-argumentos, alegando sua incompati-
bilidade com a realidade (ou criando-a). Esse tipo de argumentao geralmente
aponta para duas sadas, dentre as quais cumpre escolher uma ou renunciar a

reflexes a respeito de diversas maneiras de contemplar o leitor. A seguir, lista-
mos as dicas que o autor considerou mais importantes:
1. The rough guide. A rough plan will serve you better than an elaborate
one. Writing has a way of making itself up as it goes along. No one can know
where it will go at the outset.
2. The tight thesis. On the other hand, a tight thesis will serve you better
than a loose one. Know what youre trying to say and keep on knowing it,
and keep on refining it, and keep on saying it, in all its subtlety and com-
plexity, sentence after sentence.(If it dawns on you in the writing that youre
not saying that at all, then remake your thesis and start writing again.) Know
where you stand and where you mean to go, and be clear about it. Writing is

it. This is probably not the best way to write a novel or a poem, but its good

5. Paragraphs make perfect. The second hardest and most vital work of

6. Link everything to everything else. This is not a new point; its a way of
summarizing the others. Every sentence and every paragraph should link to
the one before it and point to the one that comes next. Your readers must
know, as they read each clause and sentence and paragraph, why they are
reading it and why they are reading it here and why they are reading it now;
and they must hear in it your main point reprised, advanced and clarified.

President Bush limited scientists to 21 stem cell lines derived from surplus
embryos before mid-2001. Congress twice passed bills to allow potentially
thousands more lines from surplus embryos to be used. Mr. Bush vetoed
them. (Hundreds of stem cell lines have been created around the world, all
or virtually all from surplus embryos.)
This single-minded focus on the surplus embryos left over after patients
fertility treatments were completed was mostly because a strong moral
argument could be made that these microscopic, days-old embryos were
doomed to be discarded anyway. Why not gain potential medical benefits
from studying their stem cells?
Let us hope that the N.I.H. broadens the range of stem cells that can be
studied.
Scientists believe that one way to obtain the matched cells needed to
study diseases is to use a cell from an adult afflicted with that disease to

create a genetically matched embryo and extract its stem cells. This approach
known as somatic cell nuclear transfer is difficult, and no one has yet
done it.

a standard to judge the value of the induced pluripotent cells.
When the N.I.H. sets the rules for federally financed research, the main
criterion should be whether a proposal has high scientific merit.

and more layers of meaning to euthanasia than before. There are three basic

euthanasia concerns itself with the express wish of a mentally competent
person to die through the assistance of others. Voluntary euthanasia can
further be divided into two categories: passive voluntary which is the

The negative consequences of not legalizing euthanasia are very real and
cannot be ignored. Some terminally ill patients who are denied euthanasia

euthanasia, the government satisfies its own moral standards but ignores
the outcome of its action. Some patients cannot bear the excruciating agony
that accompanies terminal illness and when they cannot obtain physician-
assisted suicide, try to kill themselves even though they may not be in a
condition to do so. They may also beg for the help of loved ones not trained
in medicine in their suicide. As a result, the suicide may often be messy,
painful and sometimes unsuccessful. It is unfair on the family and friends of
the patients to have to go through such a nightmare when all they want is to
free their loved ones of pain and torment.
