Originally founded as Bullocks Manufacturing during the post-war residential


housing boom, I.C.E. Manufacturing was recognized for innovation and
excellence early in our history. After the company established a reputation for
designing, manufacturing and installing natural gas conversion burners for oil
and coal-fired furnaces, founder Don Bullocks returned from an ASHRAE trade
show with a natural gas line burner. Inspired, he set out to manufacture the first
direct-fired makeup air unit in his home country of Canada.

Today, the natural gas revolution continues with I.C.E. Manufacturing at the
forefront of the commercial direct-fired industry. Don had the vision long before
many others by designing a product that has outlived his legend. Our BMA
Series is named for him (Bullocks Makeup Air). This forward thinking has carried
on through such advanced products as the HTDM, the gas valve technology
available on the BMA, and the industrial-quality GIDM product line.

MTI Series Standard Temperature Control Options
Building makeup air systems maintain a constant supply air temperature to the space using a discharge temperature controller. The burner output is
modulated over a wide range to compensate for fluctuations in the incoming ambient air temperature. A gas valve regulates output according to the
demand sensed by a discharge air sensor. The fan and heat system functions are typically controlled by a remote panel with a system and
summer/winter switch or a building management system.

Discharge Air Temperature Control


Used predominantly for makeup air applications to maintain supply air at a constant temperature. The burner firing rate modulates in response to a
discharge air controller.
A) Electronic Control
The electronic modulating system consists of a discharge sensor, electronic amplifier and valve, which respond instantaneously to small fluctuations in
temperature. The system is capable of close temperature control over a wide range. Optional to the system is a remote temperature selector; range 55
to 90 deg. F. The system is also available with LED temperature indication, as an available option.

Discharge Air Temperature Control With Room Override


Commonly used in applications requiring maintenance of space temperatures as well as a constant discharge temperature. Typical applications include
plants and kitchens, which may require a morning warm-up. The override feature provides auxiliary heat to a space as required and sensed by a room
thermostat.
A) Electronic Control
The electronic modulating system as described above, in addition to the RTS (Remote Temperature Sensor) is furnished with a space thermostat. If the
thermostat setting is not satisfied, the burner will go to high fire until the thermostat is satisfied. Once satisfied the burner will return to being controlled
by RTS set point.
B) Electronic Control With High-Low RTS
The electronic modulating system as described above and in addition to the High RTS (Remote Temperature Sensor), a Low RTS is provided. Each RTS
can be set at varying desired discharge air set points. A space thermostat will switch between High and Low RTS. If the thermostat setting is not
satisfied, the discharge temperature will be increased (High RTS) until the thermostat is satisfied. Once the thermostat is satisfied, the unit will return to
being controller by the Low RTS set point. (Available with A1010 only)

Space Temperature Control


Used primarily for space heating applications, i.e. maintaining the space temperature at a certain level. This is accomplished primarily by using a space
thermostat.
A) Electronic Control
The burner firing rate is modulated in response to an amplified signal from a room-mounted thermostat. The discharge temperature is maintained within
preset maximum and minimum settings on the amplifier. The control package includes a thermostat with a temperature selector mounted either on the
remote panel or in the space. (Available with A1010 only)

Building Management Systems


A) Electronic Control
The unit will be configured to accept either a 0-10 VDC, or 4-20 mA input signal to allow BMS full control over the discharge air temperature set point.

Miscellaneous Control Options


Freeze Protection
Specified to protect against untempered air entering the space. The freeze thermostat, also known as an auto low limit, is located in the discharge air
and is wired in parallel with a time delay relay. In the event that the discharge air temperature is not above the freeze thermostat setting, within a preset
time during start-up and under normal operation the unit will shut down.

Inlet Air Controller


Features an adjustable thermostat, which monitors outdoor air temperatures. When the temperature exceeds the setting of the thermostat, the burner
will not operate even when the unit is in the winter mode.

Night Setback
This feature is available as an option on all temperature control systems. By lowering the discharge air temperature requirements during unoccupied
periods the owner can realize operating economies and still provide heat to the space as required. During the occupied cycle, the unit will be brought on
though an interlock, timeclock or switch. During the unoccupied period the timeclock provided, switches the system control to a single stage thermostat
set at the desired unoccupied temperature. The unit will then be started intermittently to provide heat to maintain the space at the unoccupied
temperature setpoint.

Application Guide For Indirect Fired MTI Series
MTI unit models are designated by their MBH input. Thus a MTI 12-700 has 700 MBH input, or 700,000 BTUH.
All MTI units are 80% efficient at high fire, thus output is BTUH input / 0.80.
Once you have chosen your required BTUH output, you can use BTUH output / 0.80 to find your required input, then select your model. (i.e. 560,000
BTUH / 0.80 = 700,000 BTUH Model = MTI 12-700).
Choose your airflow (this may be your first step if the unit is applied in a make-up air situation).
Calculate your TSP (add your ESP with your accessories accessory pressure drops can be found on page 7). With your airflow and TSP selected
you can find your BHP from the charts on page 6 & 7.
Unit weights can be found on page 8.
Given the entering and leaving air dry bulb temperatures or temperature rise, the equation below can be used to calculate the required MBH capacity.

MBH Capacity = (CFM x C x (LAT-EAT))/0.80/1000


MBH capacity: BTUH/1000 (British Thermal units per hour
CFM: Cubic Feet per minute of air
C: Gas constant of 1.08 based on air density at 75 deg. F
EAT: Entering air dry bulb temperature (deg. F)
LAT: Leaving air dry bulb temperature (deg. F)
0.8: MTI Series Efficiency

Example For Make-Up Air


An apartment building needs to have corridor pressurization. 10% pressurization is required and it is determined that 2950 CFM exhaust is required. -20
deg. F is the design ambient, and desired discharge temp is 70 deg F. Units will be roof mounted, down discharge, and will have an ESP of 0.70" W.C.
Select the appropriate MTI model, and find the BHP for the unit.
Selection:
Since we are exhausting 2950 CFM, and desire 10% pressurization, we can calculate that we need 3245 CFM of supply air (2950 + 10% = 3245)
We know our EAT = -20 deg. F, and LAT = 70 deg. F, thus we can calculate:
MBH Capacity = (CFM x C x (LAT-EAT))/0.80/1000
MBH Capacity = (3245 x 1.08 x (70 (-20)))/0.80/1000
MBH Capacity = 394.27
The closest model available is the MTI 11-400 which has 400 MBH input

We can now calculate our TSP:

Consulting the chart for the MTI 11-400 (page 6) at 3245 CFM and 1.0" W.C we find our BHP = 1.81 BHP Thus we need a 2.0 HP motor minimum.

Example for Heat-Vent Unit


A small banquet room needs a minimum of 20% fresh air in unoccupied mode and 100% fresh air in occupied mode. It has been calculated that at -30
deg. F the room loses 450,000 BTUH. It has been determined that 4500 CFM is required for the application. The outdoor air is -30 deg. F, and desired
leaving air is 75 deg F. Return air will be 70 deg F. ESP is calculated to be 0.5" W.C. Select the appropriate model and find the BHP for the unit.
Selection:
Part 1 (Unoccupied mode)
We are only bringing in 20% outside air in this mode, thus 900 CFM is outside air and 3600 CFM is return air.
We know our EAT for outside air = -30 deg. F, and LAT = 75 deg. F, thus we can calculate:
MBH Capacity = (CFM x C x (LAT-EAT))/0.80/1000
MBH Capacity = (900 x 1.08 x (75 (-30)))/0.80/1000
MBH Capacity = 127.58
We also know that the room is losing 450 MBH, thus we need to add that to the calculation. 450 MBH = 562.5 MBH input
Thus the total Heat input capacity required = 690.06 MBH
Before we select our model we must check the occupied mode to ensure we have sufficient heat capacity.

Part 2 (Occupied mode)
We will be delivering 4500 CFM of outside in this mode
We know our EAT for outside air = -30 deg. F, and LAT = 75 deg. F, thus we can calculate:
MBH Capacity = (CFM x C x (LAT-EAT))/0.80/1000
MBH Capacity = (4500 x 1.08 x (75 (-30)))/0.80/1000
MBH Capacity = 637.88
Thus to satisfy both options we need to use an MTI 12-700.

We can now calculate our TSP:

Consulting the chart for the MTI 12-700 (page 7) at 3245 CFM (Use 4714 CFM) and 0.75" W.C we find our BHP = 2.87 BHP - We can use
a 3 hp motor.

Example for a Heating Only Unit


An entrance vestibule to a store can potentially see 100% fresh air during times when the entrance doors open frequently. Thus a durable MTI unit
should be selected for this application. 4000 CFM at 0.5" W.C is determined to be the appropriate amount of air for the vestibule, and 320 MBH is
calculated to be the appropriate amount of heat capacity required. Select the appropriate model and find the BHP for the unit.
Selection:
Since the heating load calculation has already been completed we simply need to use the heating capacity divided by the efficiency of the MTI unit
to find our model:
MBH input = MBH output/Efficiency
MBH input = 320 MBH/0.8
MBH input 400 MBH

Thus we know our model will be an MTI 11-400

We can now calculate our TSP:

TYPICAL SPECIFICATIONS
Supply an ICE Manufacturing Ltd. indirect fired heat vent unit designed for (indoor) (outdoor) installation. The capacity and configuration shall be as
detailed on the drawings. The unit shall be ETL certified and listed to be in compliance with the current ANSI Z83.8 second edition; CSA/CGA 2.6-2002;
Addenda A-2003; Addenda B-2004.
The burners, gas train and controls are to be in accordance with (ANSI) requirements. Both burner and blower shall be compensated for altitude
of operation.
The unit is to be completely factory test fired to verify proper operation. The unit capacity is to be validated with an instantaneous flow meter.
A complete electrical circuit analysis is to be conducted and all systems operated and measured. A combustion analyzer is to be employed while unit
is operating at full capacity to verify combustion emissions. Burner combustion must be clean and odorless and no aliphatic aldahydes are to be
detectable. Combustion efficiency is to be at least 80% while maintaining clean emissions.

Unit Casing
Unit construction is to be of industrial quality heavy gauge bonderized steel. The unit design shall incorporate a full base pan supported by an integral
heavy base.
To ensure the casings are airtight and weatherproof, all panels are to be caulked during assembly. All casings are to be hand fitted and secured with
gasketed self-tapping screws. Roof casing are to feature three-break standing seam panel design.
Entire unit casing and accessories are to be insulated with fiberglass insulation with hard neoprene facing. (1 or 2 in. thick 1-1/2# or 2# density)
insulation is to be secured with industrial glue and welded pin spots. Insulation is to be certified to fire and flamespread ratings as outlined by the ANSI
code. The entire floor of the unit is to feature a steel liner sandwiching the insulation.
Units are to be equipped with access doors to all serviceable components. Access doors are to have full-length stainless steel piano hinges. All access
doors are to be equipped with an insulation liner, positive seal latches and gasketing. Access doors are to open outward on negative pressure sections
and inward on positive pressure sections. Access doors to feature 6 in. handles with locking roller mechanism for ease of latching. All outdoor unit
access doors are to be equipped with drain troughs.
Units are to be finished with an industrial grade chain stop alkyd enamel paint. The medium grey finish coat is to be a mimum of 3 mils thick and provide
100% coverage.

Blower/Motor Section
Unit(s) shall be supplied with a single AMCA rated centrifugal forward curved industrial statically and dynamically balanced blower. The fan shall be
mounted on a heavy duty machined and polished shaft. The shafts maximum operating speed is not to exceed 75% of its first critical speed. The
bearings and motor shall be mounted in the airstream. The T-frame motor shall be mounted in a motor compartment on a fully adjustable base. The
bearings are to be industrial pillow block type supplied with extended grease lines. The blower is to be driven with an (adjustable) (fixed) 1.25 s.f. V-belt
drive package concealed in a belt guard. Outdoor units shall have hinged door(s) to provide easy access to maintain and inspect motor, belts &
bearings.

Furnace Section
The furnace section shall be positioned downstream of the blower section to ensure it is operating in a positive pressure chamber. The furnace is to be
constructed of minimum 16 gauge heavy duty 409 (optional 304) stainless steel tubes. The furnace shall include heavy duty inshot burners.
The furnace section will operate under a negative pressure as induced by the power venter. The power venter will be two speed to provide optimum
combustion and efficiency levels on reduced capacities. The power ventor shall come standard with a blocked flue switch, and the burner equipped with
a flame roll out switch. A modulating electro-mechanical valve will reduce gas flow in response to the signal from the unit mounted PLC. The modulation
will allow reduction of capacity down to 1/6 of high fire per furnace.
Indoor units shall be suitable for sidewall venting, and shall come with optional sealed combustion kit.
