T he mission trip to Phnom Penh, Cambodia was

one of the most humbling experiences of my
spiritual journey so far.
Our trip started with a 1-day visit to the
notorious Killing Fields and S-21 Genocide
Museum, both hell on earth". Weeks prior to the
trip our leaders had emotionally prepared us with
the horrors of the Khmer Rouge regime in the late
1970s that killed 150 million people.
This helped us have more compassion towards
people whom we were about to encounter, for the
sufferings their country has endured and its hard
time recovering.
For the following 6 days we served mainly
through children and youth ministrieswe carried
out English classes for different age groups in
Glory Methodist Church, visited orphans in Happy
Land and also orphans with HIV in Rainbow Bridge
who have contracted HIV through their infected
mothers.
A lot of us were moved to tears when we
heard stories of babies found in bins, HIV toddlers
who longed for a hug and human touch before
they passed on, and HIV-positive teenagers who
yearned for long-lasting relationships and affection
just like you and I.
But some incredible survival stories were
equally stirring under the nurture of the
orphanages, we were told how one HIV-positive
teenager is now well and strong and serving as a
transporter in the orphanage, how one rape victim
is now in the safe hands of the orphanage, and
how one baby with brain infection is now growing
healthier day after day.
Time and again I was reminded that "the Lord
your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor
forsake you."(Deuteronomy 31:6)
We also spent great time with teenage girls
from the Water of Life Girls' Hostel, home to 22
girls housed in a warm family environment and
are now receiving education in high schools and
universities.
At night we had fellowship with teenage
boys and girls from the same Hostel, sharing our
testimonies and enjoying each other's company. A
jolly teenager shared how he was still a roaming
street kid till the age of 12 before he was sent to
Water of Life, and how much he treasures time
with his Hostel's "brothers" playing soccer and
attending university together. Another cheery girl
shared her life as a medical student and an English
tutor, as well as her dedication every Sunday after
church to cross the river for outreach work.
For me, these confident, fine young teenagers
are such great testimonies of precious lives
transformed by God. God empowers and "if
anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old
things passed away; behold, new things have
come. (2 Corinthians 5:17)
It is heartbreaking to see how some young
men were made redundant in their skilled jobs
in garment factory and restaurant, and have to
garbage-pick while waiting for the next job. It is
also very worrying to learn how 3 teenage sisters
are staying alone in shambles around the garbage
hill and are in such great vulnerability to predators.
Perhaps these homeless people and garbage
pickers could only find little comfort from what
little food and brief words of encouragement we
offered. But we know that it is not the plentiful that
God comforts, but those who mourn and are meek
(Matthew 5:4-5).
The poor and the sick are all made in the
image and likeness of God, just like you and I. I left
Cambodia with a heavy heart remembering those
in poverty and desperation. But I also felt spiritually
uplifted: never had I witnessed so many walking
testimonies of transformed lives, within such short
7-days window of a trip. May I always challenge
myself to serve locally and also globally, to continue
serving the needy as best as I can.
