CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

A. Materials

The materials needed in the production of Lansium Domesticum (Lanzones) as

Mosquito Killer are 15g of cornstarch, 200mm x 250mm of aluminum foil, 15g of

sundried lanzones peelings, coil, mortar and pestle, basin container, food coloring

(optional), 15ml of water and measuring cups.

B. Methods

In making Lansium Domesticum (Lanzones) as Mosquito Killer, the cut lanzones

peelings were dried for three (3) to five (5) days or until fully dried. These were pulverized

using mortar and pestle. The powder was mixed with cornstarch. After mixing thoroughly

was added. Mix the mixture very well until it turns sticky. The mixture was poured in a

molder to shape it like a coil. This was dried under the heat of the sun for twenty-four (24)

to forty-eight (48) hours.

C. Experimental Set-Up

The independent variable is the lanzones peelings, and dependent variable is the

number of mosquitos that place in three (3) boxes.

D. Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers put a mosquito coil (product) in Box A and with approximately ten

(10) mosquitoes. Another mosquito coil (product) was put in Box B with approximately
fifteen (15) mosquitoes, while in Box C the researchers put approximately twenty (20)

mosquitoes and a mosquito coil (product).

The date were recorded in a table illustrated below.

E. Sample & Sample Procedure

What organism was used in testing the effectivity of the product? How did you collect

the organisms?

To test the effectivity of the product the researchers use mosquito as sample organism.

Each member contributes samples for this study by catching in their respective houses.

Light traps are a means of collecting adult mosquitoes by using their attraction to light.
They provide an objective measure of mosquito activity.

Traps are usually placed in a known mosquito area, in a secure location out of
sight of the public.
o Parks, golf courses or backyards of cooperative persons may be utilised.
They are usually suspended at about 6ft (2 metres) above ground level from a post
or tree, 30 feet (10 metres) or more from buildings, in open areas near trees and
shrubs.
The attractiveness of light traps to many mosquitoes may be increased by using
them with carbon dioxide (CO2): a small block of dry ice is wrapped tightly in
newspaper or placed in a padded shipping envelope placed in a small cold
container designed to allow CO2 gas to escape and is suspended a few inches
above the light trap.
Collected mosquitoes are gathered every morning and placed in a correctly
labelled container until the catch can be sorted with identification and counting of
the mosquitoes present.
Traps should be used on a regular schedule, one to seven nights per week.
Traps should be in position and operational from just before dark until just after
daylight.

The sample we worked mostly with is the lanzones peelings. It is said that lanzones

peelings have properties that help repel mosquitoes, making it suitable to make as mosquito

coil. The lanzones peeling when dried under the sun, it turns from light brown into deep

brown in color. It also turned crispy making it easier to pulverize.

Cornstarch was used to make the consistency of the paste thicker. Its color is white

and when mixed with pulverized lanzones peelings that color disappears, and it makes the

paste thick. We gathered the materials by assigning it among the members. The lanzones

was brought by volunteer member and the others paid for the expenses. The other materials

were assigned by the leader of the group for the members to bring.

The researchers collected the data through searching in different resources like

books and internet. Organize them by the data they collected like what are the right tools
or ingredient to be use in the experiment proper. And record it by following the procedures

exactly the way it is was written.

There are lot of ways to interpret the data. The researchers analyzed and interpreted

the data through useful and through reading to understand it. Once they understand and

interpreted the researchers use on hand talked about the factors that should be taken notice

of, like quantity, the quality, and the like. They able to connect the dots and produce useful

information that can help them in conducting the experiment. The researchers know

through the gathered, analyzed, and interpreted data they can give the best result and make

this experiment happen.
