ENGINE -- INSPECTION OF THE FAN SPINNER ASSEMBLY

1. PLANNING INFORMATION

A. Effectivity
(1) Engines
AE 3007C and AE 3007C1 engines with serial numbers;
CAE330268 thru CAE330525, and engines that have complied with Service Bulletin AE
3007C--72--140.
NOTE: The engine serial numbers above are based on current production records and
should be used for planning purposes only.
(2) Spares -- Not affected

B. Reason
Spin pit testing of the fan spinner assembly (23070964) or (23078783) showed an area of high
stress concentration in the bolt hole window that can potentially develop into low cycle fatigue
cracks. This service bulletin requires all AE 3007C/C1 engines with spinners (23070964) or
(23078783) to have the spinner inspected by using the eddy current inspection procedure. The
inspection is required for all AE 3007C/C1 engines with spinner (23070964) or (23078783)
within 2000 engine flight hours or 18 months from receiving this bulletin, whichever occurs first.

C. Description
This service bulletin gives you the procedure to inspect the area around the 12 bolt hole
windows of the AE 3007C/C1 spinner assemblies (23070964) and (23078783) for cracks using
the eddy current inspection method.

D. Approval
Technical aspects are FAA approved.

E. Manpower
In Service Approximately 1.0 man--hour is necessary to do this service bulletin.
Engine Removed Approximately 1.0 man--hour is necessary to do this service bulletin.

F. Compliance
Recommended. You should do this bulletin (engine installed) within 2000 flight hours or 18
months time after you receive it (whichever occurs first), or at the next shop visit if the engine is
removed before the 2000 flight hours or 18 months time.

G. Interchangeability -- Not affected

H. Material Availability -- Not applicable

2. ACCOMPLISHMENT INSTRUCTIONS
CAUTION: IN ORDER TO REDUCE THE POTENTIAL FOR MULTIPLE--ENGINE IN--FLIGHT
SHUTDOWN, POWER LOSS, OR OTHER ANOMALY DUE TO MAINTENANCE
ERROR, ROLLS--ROYCE RECOMMENDS THAT OPERATORS AVOID
PERFORMING MAINTENANCE ON MULTIPLE ENGINES INSTALLED ON THE
SAME AIRCRAFT AT THE SAME TIME. IF IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO AVOID
MAINTENANCE ON MORE THAN ONE ENGINE AT THE SAME TIME,
ROLLS--ROYCE RECOMMENDS THAT ADDITIONAL CONTROLS ARE APPLIED IN
ORDER TO ENSURE THAT MAINTENANCE TASKS HAVE BEEN COMPLETED AS
DEFINED. MAINTENANCE GUIDELINES SHOULD BE REVISED, WHERE
POSSIBLE, TO PROMOTE THIS RECOMMENDATION.
A. Do the inspection of the spinner.
(1) Make the aircraft safe.
(a) Open the applicable circuit breakers.
(b) Put up the applicable warning signs.
(2) If the spinner is to be removed, then go to step 2.A.(4).
(3) If the spinner is not to be removed, then go to step 2.A.(5).
(4) Remove the spinner (Ref. TASK 72--21--20--000--801, MM).
(5) Do the eddy current inspection to each of the 12 fan spinner bolt hole windows (scallops)
using the following procedure.
NOTE: The eddy current inspection must be done by an inspector certified in accordance
with NAS 410 or equivalent.
NOTE: Alternative eddy current equipment may be used if approved by Rolls--Royce in
advance.
(a) Calibrate the eddy current instrument.
1 Connect the Uniwest probe (CSD--US 2001) to the Eddy Current Instrument
using the proper cable, (See Table 1).
2 Examine the probe. The Teflon tape that covers the probe should be smooth with
no signs of rips, tears, or gaps.
3 Set the eddy current instrument to the parameters that follow depending on the
instrument you are using.
a Set the Uniwest 454 to the following initial parameters:
Frequency 700 kHz
Gain 40.0 dB
Rotation 315 Deg
Probe Drive HIGH
LP Filter 1.00 kHz
HP Filter 1 Hz
X Sensitivity 1 V/DIV
Y Sensitivity 0.2 V/DIV

e Set the Nortec 19E to the following initial parameters:
Frequency 700 KHz
Rotation 126
H Gain 56
V Gain 81
LP Filter 50
HP Filter 0
NOTE: Alternate eddy current instruments may be used if approved by
Rolls--Royce. Contact Rolls--Royce to determine initial setup
parameters.
4 Using the probe and the master, ensure that a 80% vertical signal is achieved
from the 0.030 X 0.060 in (.76 X 1.52 mm) notch. If this is not achieved make
fine adjustments to the gain or rotation to produce a signal similar to Figure 1.
This signal will be referred to as the master flaw signal. Lift off should be
horizontal.
(b) Do the inspection using the eddy current procedure.
WARNING: DO NOT BREATHE THE FUMES FROM ACETONE. IT IS
POISONOUS, EXPLOSIVE, AND VERY FLAMMABLE. DO NOT GET
IT ON YOUR SKIN OR IN YOUR EYES. KEEP AWAY FROM HEAT,
SPARKS, AND OPEN FLAMES. USE ONLY IN AN AREA WITH
CONTINUOUS AIR FLOW. WEAR SAFETY CLOTHING, SPLASH
GOGGLES, AND A FACE SHIELD. IF YOU GET ACETONE ON
YOUR SKIN, CLEAN WITH SOAP AND WATER. IF YOU GET IT IN
YOUR EYES, FLUSH WITH WATER. GET MEDICAL AID.
1 Use a lint--free cloth and the acetone (0--A--51) to clean the 12 bolt hole windows
on the spinner assembly.
2 Examine the spinner for cracks by moving the probe through arc motions and
small axial translations into the scallop area for each of the 12 bolt hole windows.
The probe is established into the bolt hole recess when the signal first reached
the null point. (Ref Fig. 2 and Fig. 3).
NOTE: Make sure that each successive movement of the probe overlaps the
last movement to make sure the correct coverage is obtained. A
possible crack can exist in the area where the notch is in the master.
NOTE: Make sure that the signal from the edge radius of the part is not
incorrectly identified as a flaw signal. This signal is typically at a
different phase angle.
3 Look for a flaw signal similar to the signal in Fig. 1. A flaw signal that looks like
the signal graph in Fig. 1 is a crack.
4 If the flaw signal on the spinner, identified in the area of the EDM slot on the
master, is less than 50% of the master flaw signal, the flaw signal is permitted.
5 If the flaw signal on the spinner identified in the area of the EDM slot on the
master, is more than 50% of the master flaw signal, a crack is indicated.
6 If you find a crack with the eddy current procedure and a replacement part is
available, remove the spinner (Ref. TASK 72--21--20--000--801, MM). and go to
step 2.E. If a replacement part is not available and you want to determine if the
spinner can be used for the 100 hour fly--on, go to step 2. B to measure the
crack. If no cracks were found with the eddy current inspection go to step 2.D.

B. Do the spot Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection (FPI), Sensitivity Level II to the crack indication
found with the eddy current inspection. (Ref. TASK 70--00--00--200--802, MM).
NOTE: The spot (FPI) is needed to accurately measure the crack length found with the eddy
current inspection.
C. Measure the total length of the crack, and use Table 2 below to determine the procedure
necessary.

ITEM SERVICEABLE LIMITS REPAIR LIMITS ACTION NECESSARY
