Lecture 2: A brief History of Engineering
The history of engineering is really important and every engineer should have a basic idea about it, before graduating. There is a lot of responsibility attached with the title of an Engineer such as The professional engineers duty to public welfare is paramount. The name Engineer is derived from Genius. The tragic disaster of the Quebec Bridge in the early 1900s is where the iron ring idea was generated to be as a reminder. The Canada arm is one of Canadas great discoveries. - The Egyptian Engineers history began in 2500BC with the Pyramids. Some of the great discoveries were the Sphinx and the Great Pyramid of Khufu. - The Mesopotamian Engineers were mostly specialized in military and arms designing. They discovered the prototype of a tank and the battering ram with tower. - The Greek engineers were over shadowed by literacy, art and philosophy, which gave them the name of architecture engineers, for example: the Acropolis, the Parthenon. - The Roman engineers were the masters of project management and advancement in science. Some of their work is the Roman Aqueducts, which was built to carry water from one place to another. - The industrial revolution and mechanical engineering started in Great Britain in the 18th century and spread through from there. James Watt the father of steam engine was a very important discovery. The crank converted linear motion to rotary motion. - Electrical Engineers were taken seriously in the 19th century onwards. Some of the few leaders are Ohm, Faraday, Maxwell and Siemens. Power was on of the most important discoveries in electrical engineering history. - Canadian Engineering board began in 1887. 110 projects were submitted and only 10 outstanding achievements were selected from the list. Elsie was the first Canadian women to obtain an electrical engineering degree from the university in Toronto and specialized in aeronautical engineering. She was known as the queen of the hurricane. - The Quebec bridge disaster in 1907 was a tragic in engineering history. Another lesson to learn from was the heron road bridge. They act as reminders! -The Iron ring ceremony was a ritual started in in Toronto but the Het haul tan. To act as a reminder for engineers of the responsibility they have. Engineering has been increasingly specialized and plays a big role in the revolution of engineering.
