Project 1: Case Study of Building Services in Public Buildings

Total assessment: 40%
Prerequisite: None

Assessment Type Marks (%) Submission

Project 1 Group (Report) 20 Week 7
Group (Videologue) 10 (13 October 2017)
Individual (Report/ Peer Assessment) 10 Hardcopy & Online

Introduction

This is a group project to perform a case study on building services systems applied and installed in multi-storey
buildings. Students will be introduced to the common systems that are used in a bigger volume of spaces and a variety
of users. This exercise requires students to develop their own understanding in the application of building services to
make a building technically functional. This discovery will be useful in their future design studio projects to ensure that
their building design proposals are practical and efficient.

Objectives of Project

The objectives of this assignment are as follows:

1. To introduce students to the basic principles, process and equipment of various building services systems found
in buildings (experiential learning).
2. To expose students to the integration of various building services systems in a building.
3. To allow students to demonstrate their understanding of building services systems and statutory requirements.
4. To develop students understanding and familiarization in applying the correct graphic communications according
to the required standards (MS1184).

Learning Outcome of this Project

Upon completion of this assignment, students will be able to:

1. Identify and understand relevant information related to mechanical ventilation, air-conditioning system, mechanical
transportation system as well as fire protection systems.
2. Understand the functions and purposes of building services systems.
3. Understand the statutory requirements and regulations involved in building designs and its importance towards
practicality and public safety.

Tasks - Methodology

You are required to form a group of 5 to 6 members.

Under the tutelage of a lecturer, each group is required to choose one multi-storey building as a case study to analyse
the following systems associated to building services:

i. mechanical ventilation
ii. air-conditioning system
iii. fire protection system (active and passive fire protection system)
iv. mechanical transportation system

Each group will need to document their findings accordingly. It is entirely up to the group members to delegate the
tasks to each of their members. The purpose of this assignment is to familiarize students with the application of building
systems, which in future can be applied to their design proposals. This will enable them to demonstrate their
understanding in building operations.

The methodology of the project are as follows:

1. Identify a building for your case study. It must have all the required services components. Selection of building can
be of the following:

i. Residential apartments
ii. Office building
iii. Shopping complexes

2. Organize a technical visit to the building of your choice and perform a thorough study on all the services systems:

i. mechanical ventilation
ii. air-conditioning system
iii. fire protection system (active and passive fire protection system)
iv. mechanical transportation system (elevator and escalator/ travellator systems)

3. Obtain estimated dimensions and sizes of the spaces required for all the equipment and plant rooms identified.
4. Provide explanation and relevant sketches on how the building services components function in a well-
documented A4 report.
5. Summarize the systems in a form of a videologue (max. 5 minutes) explaining the operation of the systems using
graphical animation, video, voice-over, subtitles and other added features which are relevant to the topics
discussed.

(Students are advised to read and perform some research on building services literature/materials).

Submission Requirement

Each group are required to prepare the following:

1. An A4 bound report consisting all the required building services systems.

2. Videologue (max. 5 minutes)
3. E-report (submitted as part of e-portfolio in Week 13)
4.
Suggested Format of Submission
Cover page (with subject heading) - Name and Students ID number and group photo should be written clearly (TU Logo)

Assessment criteria

The assessment for this assignment will be based on the following:

Depth of study and richness of content (report, diagrams and sketches)

Demonstrating the understanding of technical applications (mechanical transportation, A/C, mechanical
ventilation and fire-fighting systems both passive and active)
Clarity in visual communication demonstrated in the videologue.
Well-documented report
Ability to work as a team (peer assessment)

Marking criteria

Marks shall be distributed as follows:

i. Group - Report (formatting and content) - 20%

ii. Group - Videologue - 10%
iii. Individual - (partaking in case study) - 5%
iv. Peer assessment - 5%

Teamwork is crucial and time is of the essence, as in all projects.
