Initial - Registration Course

for Overseas Registered Nurses

The Initial Registration Course for Overseas Qualified Nurses approved by the Nurses Board of Nurses Victoria is a 13 week course
designed to facilitate the transition from nursing overseas to nursing within Australia. The course is accessible to all overseas
Qualified Nurses wishing to nurse in Australia who have been recommended by the Nurses Board of Victoria for eligibility.

The aim of this course is to assist overseas Qualified Nurses to embrace the knowledge and skills required to work as a nurse in
Australia and provide support in the transition from nursing in their country of origin to nursing in Australia.

On successful completion of this course students will be eligible to apply for registration as a Registered Nurse (Division 1) with
the Nurses Board of Victoria.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
• A letter from the Nurses Board of Victoria (www.nbv.org.au) confirming eligibility to complete an Initial Registration course,
including any requirements as stated within the letter from NBV.
• Be a Permanent Resident or Citizen of Australia or have an appropriate VISA (for advice contact the Australian Government’s
Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs - www.immi.gov.au).
• Applicants may be required by ETEA to provide additional information or attend a selection interview.
• A Criminal Records (Police) Check that has been issued within the past 3 months.
• ETEA strongly recommends immunisation and endorses the recommendations included in the immunisation guidelines for
Health Care Workers (Department of Human Services 1998).

ENROLMENT PROCESS
• An Application Form is completed by the Applicant and submitted to ETEA with supporting documentation so that ETEA can
assess the Applicant’s suitability for the course. A non-refundable Assessment Fee applies for this process to commence.
• If the Applicant is successful with their application, a Letter of Offer will be sent to the Applicant. To accept the Offer the
Applicant will need to sign the Letter of Offer and return the original to ETEA with a deposit equal to 50% of the total course
fees by the stated due date (7 days from the Letter of Offer date).

TRAINING AND ASSESSMENT


Training and assessment will be a combination of classroom, clinical placement and assessment. Assessment is used to give you
feedback on your progress and measure your skills and knowledge against the unit requirements and those of the industry.

Refer to the course schedule on our website for commencement dates. The course is made up of 5 weeks of theory and 8 weeks of
clinical practice, with the possibility for early exit after the 9th week.
