Self-Introduction

Ever since I was young, I had some sort of basic thought, and idea, that I wanted to teach.

I did not know what subject or what age level, but I had a strong passion as well as desire to

teach in some sort of school to students of some age. It was not until recently that I decided I

wanted to teach English to Secondary Education students at the high school level. This decision

came to me in my final three years of my own Secondary Education studies. My sophomore

year, I had an English instruction whom I was not too fond of. I did not care for school, or let

alone English as a subject, and I wanted students to enjoy the subject and make a positive change

in each of their lives. I then had the same teacher for my final two years, and she gave me the

complete opposite feeling than did the previous instructor. She helped cultivate a love for the

subject of English that I had not previously felt or known, and opened my mind to new

possibilities that I had never even thought of: inspiring students, believing them, and creating a

classroom environment that was healthy, and cared for students and their successes, rather than

focusing on just a curriculum and standards in a way that did not make sense to high school

students. I want to be a catalyst for students to enjoy learning and coming to not only my English

class, but also school in general on a daily basis.

I have arranged my classroom in an arc-like setup. I would like the front of the classroom

to have a podium and there be arcs of desks in half-circles around the center podium. I believe

this offers easy viewing angles for all students in the classroom to see anything and everything,

as well as to make eye contact with others if needed. This arrangement also resembles a musical

ensemble, like a band or orchestra, where the conductor is in the front and center of the

formation. This would allow students to easily pay attention to me as the speaker, or anyone

presenting for that matter. The purple square is the door, and my desk would be placed in the

back of the classroom. Rear classroom desks, historically, have represented teachers that like to

keep their eye on students but also allow students to more easily approach the teacher without

going to the front of the classroom. I think having a comfortable chair and bookshelf area in the

classroom is nice for students to go to to relax when the lesson is over as well.

Bean Bags and comfortable chairs will be placed in the back of the classroom, and I will

encourage students to relax in them during times of reading and relaxing. I will also keep my

classroom door open while class is not in session (passing periods, planning period, lunch, and

before and after school starts). Allowings students to come into my room whenever they want

will help dissipate the barrier of approachability, as long as every meeting is kept professional.

I will also have posters and wall decorations around and on all of the walls that have

classic book posters, as well as book cover posters from the AP-reading list. The white board

would show the different classes and their assignments and work schedules.

Classroom Procedures

General Procedures

Beginning of Class : Students will take their seats in previously assigned seats by seating

chart. Students will be required to have homework ready for turn-in upon entering the

classroom.

Attendance Check : Attendance will be taken a minute or two after the bell

rings.

Late Students : Any student coming to class late will give a random one-minute

improv discussion on a random topic, chosen by the instructor before class.

Classroom Materials : Homework, classroom books, as well as proper pens and pencils

will be brought to class on a daily basis. Remembering everything and being prepared is a

must to succeed in class.

Out-Of-Class : Students will be offered to come in to talk at any moment they desire to

meet. I will be available during lunch, and if students want to study or eat in the

classroom during this time, I will allow them to do so with an open-door policy.

Discipline Strategies & Rules/Consequences

Late Work : Late work will be accepted the day after it is due for half credit. Assuming

the work is 100% correct, a 50% will be awarded.

Late Students : As stated above: Any student coming to class late will give a random

one-minute improv discussion on a random topic, chosen by the instructor before class.

Electronic Usage : The use of all electronic devices will be prohibited during class time.

Cell phones, laptops, and in-classroom computers will be allowed when there is an

assignment that requires the usage of such technology.

Continuous Misdemeanours : Students who continue to arrive to class late or

unprepared will be disciplined appropriately. They will be required to see me, their

instructor, after class. Word credit will be docked from students grades if they refuse to

listen to instruction.
