Compressed Gases
Hazard Controls: - Storage away from heat, sparks, open
- Registration system for compressed gas flames or hot surfaces
cylinders - Warning signs: e.g. No Smoking
- Risk assessment - Safety cage
- Labeling (gas type, weight, serial number, - Barricading
retest date, etc.) - Fire-resistant walls
- Fire Extinguisher - The appropriate safety signs and warnings
- Safe gauges. - Locate away from traffic routes
Outline: - Safe gas valves and hoses
- Groups - Flashback arrestor Transportation Requirements
- Hazards - Proper handled & transported - Good handling techniques.
- Hazard Controls - Safety Training (e.g. firefighting) - Approved carts or dollies with restraining
- Inspection (unsafe conditions/acts) - Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) bars, chains, or straps
- Wear safety footwear and industrial gloves - Lift truck
The groups of compressed gases: - Safety signs and warnings - Secured cylinders by chains or straps.
- Liquefied: e.g. chlorine, propane, nitrous oxide - No overfilled lead
and carbon dioxide
- Non-liquefied: e.g. oxygen and nitrogen.
- Dissolved gases: e.g. Acetylene
Cylinders / bottles are manufactured from a variety
of materials - principally steels or aluminum

The units of gas cylinder pressure: Flashback or

-Kilopascals (kPa) - Gauge (psig) flame arrestors
Gauge pressure = Total gas pressure inside cylinder Storage Requirements:
- atmospheric pressure - Proper Locking (caps)
- Upright position
Hazards: - Security: Proper attached
- Fire and explosion (Flammable Gases & Oxidizing - Ventilation
Gases - Segregate flammable gases and empty
- Toxic by inhalation, eye or skin contact (Toxic Gases). cylinder from others by distance
- Manual handling injuries (leg and foot injuries.)
- Air pollution. - Falls
