Pre-Observation Form

Directions: This form is to be completed prior to every lesson that will be observed by the mentor
teacher or university supervisor. It is to be submitted no later than 3 business days prior to the actual
observation along with your lesson plans.

1. What is the topic of your lesson? The difference between a need and a want

2. Why are you teaching this lesson? What is your rationale for teaching it?
To get students to understand the difference between needs and wants. We
felt that this was an important topic lesson because a lot of children get
these two confused. A lot of children tell their parents and teachers I need
this and I need that but in reality they just want it.

3. What is your Teaching Behavior Focus? Why did you choose this?
My teacher behavior focus is: I will try to not call on the same students and to not
call on the very first hand raised. I chose this because a lot of times I find myself
calling on the first hand raised or on students that I think know the answer. But
that is not fair I need to be calling on a wide range of students and I need to
increase my wait time to give the students who take more time to think of an
answer time.

4. Why did you design your instruction in this lesson the way that you did? Why did
you choose this way of teaching the lesson (e.g., Was the idea from a methods
course? From your mentor teacher? Another source?)
We chose to read a book first because that is how many of our lessons this
semester have started. Are mentor teacher also uses books a lot with her
students so that is why we chose to open with a book. We also chose to
use technology in our lesson because that is what our students are used to
doing with our mentor teacher. It also keeps them engaged. Lastly, we used
worksheets to assess what they learned and to understand their ideas
about needs and wants.
5. As you are thinking through this lesson, what do you believe will be the most
challenging part of this lesson for you when you teach it? Why?
I think the most challenging part of the lesson will be having enough time
to get through everything we want to get through. We have a lot of
worksheets to assess their thinking and not a whole lot of time.
6. How will you know if your learning outcomes for the students are met
successfully?
We have an assessment worksheet for them to complete at the end of the
assignment that will help us know if they learned what we wanted them to.
7. How will your classroom management support the learning outcomes?
While the students are on the carpet the will be silent unless they raise
their hand for permission to speak (one of their rules). This will ensure that
all students can hear the lesson.
8. List 1-3 areas which you would like for your observer to pay particular attention.
Why do you want your observer to focus on these areas?
The questions I ask the students to facilitate the group discussion.
The way I handle talking out of turn (classroom management).

9. Is there anything else you would like your observer to know before the
observation?
