for the Indian community in
New Zealand, as it gears up to
welcome the women naval-officers
of INSV TARINI with an open heart.
The long anxious wait and
anticipation finally culminated when
the vessel touched shores of New
Zealand on the sleepy morning of
Wednesday, November 30.
This was after some anxious
moments a day before when the
vessel was hovering tantalisingly
close to the port.
However, the landfall could only
happen on early morning next day,
culminating the anxious wait and
commencing a period of joyous
celebrations of their individual

The first in the series of events
is the official reception of the crew
by the office of the Indian High
Commission to New Zealand,
at Christchurch on Thursday,
November 30.
This event will bring together
local Members of the Parliament,
Christchurch City Mayor, local
councillors, members of Diplomatic
corps, officers of the Indian Navy,
Royal New Zealand Navy, along
with several prominent community
leaders to acknowledge the
achievement of the all-women crew
of INSV TARINI.
The official event will be followed
by one of the main community event
at the Fendelton Community Centre,
Christchurch on Sunday, December
5, where community members would
have the opportunity to personally
meet and greet with the crew
members.
According to many community
leaders and members of the
community behind this event, there
is big excitement for this event
expectedly as it will be the first
opportunity for the community to
meet and greet with the brave women
officers of the Indian Navy.
Speaking to The Indian
Weekender, Hitesh Sharma one of the
members of the community involved
in community celebrations planned
for welcoming crew in Christchurch
said: I think the excitement is
through the roof.
This is such an opportunity
that probably comes only once in
the lifetime, so everyone in the
community is welcome to come.
There will be local performances,
speeches and other activities along
with the opportunity to meet with the
all-women crew, Mr Sharma further
added.
The next major events lined up
are a luncheon meeting at women
organisation Shakti in Christchurch
and a visit to Ara Institute of
Technology.

The indigenously-built INSV Tarini is a 56-foot (roughly 17 meters)
sailing vessel, five metres wide and has a displacement of
23 tonnes.
The women-crew will survive mostly on dry rations for most of the
journey as the boat has no provision for refrigeration.
There are only four beds in the boat, which means that at any
given time only four members can sleep.
The stove-top in the area marked as the kitchen inside boat is
hanging, to adjust according to tilt of the sailing vessel.
The women have undertaken several preparatory and team-
building missions. They have sailed on INSV Mhadei to Mauritius
and back and also to Cape Town.
A voyage qualifies as circumnavigation if it starts and finishes
at the same port, does not entail crossing a canal or strait, all
meridians are crossed at least once and the distance covered is
more than 21,600 nautical miles.
The vessel would return to Goa in April 2018, on completion of
the voyage.

family of three was
brutally thrashed by
two robbers in Papakura
on the night of Monday,
November 27.
Nanu Patel, owner of the
Opaheke Superette for 27 years,
was closing his dairy store just
after 8:30 p.m. when two men
entered the shop and launched an
unprovoked attack on the man.
Mr Patel called his wife and
daughter for help, who were
sitting in the lounge of their house
adjoining to the shop. The second
robber went into Mr Patels
house and attacked his wife Ms
Hasumata Patel and their daughter.
They beat me up on the
ground. I was by the door. I was
closing the shop and he wouldnt
let me close it. He just came in and
grabbed and tried to punch me in
the face, Mr Patel told the New
Zealand Herald.
Mr Patel had his chest, eyes and
head punched and received two
stitches on his forehead. He also
received a cut on his eyebrows.
His wife also received grievous
injuries to her head and face that
led to a big sore on the right side
of her face covering the eyes. The
couples 30-year old daughter now
has a broken jaw.
This is the second time the dairy
has been robbed in the past two
months.

mobile and the offenders ran from

The offenders aged 19 and 28
appeared in the Manukau District
Court and were charged with
aggravated robbery and wounding
with intent to cause grievous
bodily harm.
He did not say a word and
attacked us with his bare fists on
my head while I tried to cover
myself, Mr Patel added.

approached a nearby family
claiming to be a victim, but the
residents cottoned on quickly and
alerted police. The other man was
caught by a police dog, she said.

Supreme Sikh Society of New Zealand
has joined hands with the members of
Cook Island and Samoan community
who will re-use the used Rumala Sahibs
to make art pieces. These art pieces will
be donated to Marae, churches and other
religious places where these will be used
as curtains and other decorative purpose.
In Sikhism, Rumala (piece of
cloth) refers to wrappings, draperies
and coverlets used as altar cloths to
protect prayer books and scriptures,
orscarfworn in thegurudwaraduring communities. One such sample was
worship service or in the presence
ofGuru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture
of Sikhs.
Nearly 150 members from
Samoan, Tongan, Maori, Cook Island
communities hosted Sikh community
members in an event in Mangere on
Thursday, November 20. During the two-
hour-long event they presented a sample
of how Rumala Sahib will be used at the
religious places of these communities.
The project will be carried out with the
support of Auckland Council, Healthy
Families, WISE Auckland and Auckland
Regional Migrant Services along with
other community organisations.
Daljit Singh of Supreme Sikh Society
explained the importance of Rumala
Sahib and advised that for religious
reasons, it should be used at holy places
or activities.
The leader of Cook Island community
said that this comes as a move to extend
a friendly relationship between the two
communities. He assured that their
community respects and acknowledges
the Sikhs sentiments and will equally
respect the Rumala Sahib at their
religious places.
Nearly 200 women will stich a patch
work on the holy cloth signifying
the bond between Sikh and island
presented to Mr Singh on this occasion.
We all welcome this move where
the communities from different faiths
have come forward to device this unique
solution where a religious symbol of one
faith is being reused at another religious
place, Mr Singh Said.
This issue of Rumala Sahib overload
has been faced by the Sikh community
around the world for long time now
where communities have been trying
to work out a solution how the holy
cloth can be reused without hurting the
sentiments of Sikhs.
Recently, the Sikh temples in Takanini,
Otahuhu, Avondale, Papatoetoe,
Wellington and Christchurch received a
large number of Rumala Sahib, out of
which 5 boxes were sent to be reused
at maraes. Some of the samples will be
presented to the Sikh Supreme Society.

Three cities to host grand Jashn-e-Milad un Nabi events

programme will be held at the Samoan

Sunday, December 10 will witness
the Naath celebrations at the Hamilton
West Islamic Centre in Frankton
commencing 11:30 a.m.
Separate arrangements will be made
for the men and women at the venues
and childrens activities are also
planned to keep them engaged at the
event.
In certain parts of the world, big
processions are organised by the
community followed by public sermons
in mosques or at community centres.
The community is however encouraged
to make the most of this occasion by
offering special prayers, reciting the
holy Quran, do zikr and make dua for
the whole community.

Community to host family Islams message of peace

he Papatoetoe Family Fun day has
been celebrated since 2012 and has
received recognition and support from
Auckland Council and Otara-Papatoetoe Local
Board since 2015.
This years event is organised by Sanstha

support of Shunya Waste Solutions that aims
at reducing the waste to zero. The SWS group
has partnered with Pacific Visions Aotearoa to
achieve the zero waste goal.
The providers We Compost has been hired
for the three different bins where the volunteers
will be educating every user about the benefits
of sorting the waste and reducing it to go to
landfill.
The food stalls will be using all compostable
packaging and cutlery to reduce the waste to
landfill. At the end of the event, the data will
be collected and recorded to measure the waste
The SWS will demonstrate live composting
systems educating visitors how to reduce food
waste from the rubbish bins. The Papatoetoe
library will be host storytelling, book hunt
and colouring activities for the children.
Additionally, bouncy castles will be provided
free of cost for children.
This event aims to give families, especially
children a place to have some fun along with
some learning.
The event organised in the previous years
have recorded 500-800 people attending, and
the organisers expect the footfall to go higher
this year.
This event is organised to bring all the
cultures together with the vision of unity in
diversity.
This event is not only a fun day, but it also
represents all the cultures participating and
presenting their cultures in various ways of
food, performances and dresses. This event
constitutes health benefit programmes and
educational programmes for all age groups
including so many activities for children to
participate and learn, an organiser of the event
said.

entered the store to rob.
Three men scaled inside to loot the

It appeared that while trying to
defend himself, Mr Farrar tried to
grab the blade and the robber hurt
him in the face with force. Mr Farrar
also injured his hand and seriously
injured his face.
The robbers then fled the store,

Community driving school to help ethnic

migrants gain drivers licence

etting a drivers licence
is no longer a right, it is a
privilege for those who have
the resources and support available
to learn, practice and then pass their
way through the system.
A community owned and operated
social enterprise Puketapapa
Community Driving School (PCDS)
has taken the initiative to cater its
services to the ethnic migrants who
struggle to learn driving in New
Zealand. The community enterprise
has the goal of being Aucklands
driving school of choice.
Over 50 per cent of the people
who live in the Wesley-Roskill area
were born outside of NZ, and with
over 150 different ethnicities, the
diversity is incredible, and a good
percentage of the migrant find it hard
to get the resources and support they
need to gain their licence, which
increases their safety, confidence,
and chances of getting a job explains

Action Trust.
The enterprise has encouraged
the community members to
come and join the driving school
and learn the art of driving. The
advantage that community has that
the driving mentors at the centres
are professional drivers and from
different ethnic backgrounds so
learning for them becomes easier and
more comfortable.
One of the major barriers that
new ethnic migrants face in learning
driving is language that is why this
community initiative has employed
volunteers who are professional
drivers and can speak different
languages, community worker and
driving instructor at the centre Ms

English, Tamil and Sinhalese
and help learners with language
difficulty, Ms Shanti added.

half of New Zealanders sitting
restricted driver licences are failing,

notice citing safety risk for staff and

The Kiwibank branch on Richardson
Road also provides NZ Post services to the
community and will shut its operations on
Friday, December 22 at 5 p.m.
The owner of the franchise for 12 years
Bhasker Desai and his wife Varsha are unhappy
with this decision of Kiwibank and are
protesting to keep its operations running.

and policy. She first explained the
specific human rights affected due
to loss and damage and the domestic

In summary, I concluded the
essay by saying that irrespective
of the additional pressure climate
change-related events may place on
available resources, human rights
norms clarify how Pacific States
should respond to climate change,
she stated. Ms Mani said whenever
climate change, they should respect,
protect and consider their respective
obligations on human rights under
domestic and international law.
Complying with human rights
obligations helps to protect the rights
of everyone affected by loss and
damage and it also promotes policy
coherence, she said.
Speaking about her achievement,
Ms Mani said she was blessed and

108 steps temple opens in Waiqele

A temple which has 108 steps leading to a hot spring
below for Hindu devotees in Waiqele, Labasa, was opened on
Sunday by prominent Labasa businessman Daya Singh.
The Shiri Mahadeo Shiuwala Mandir steps are used for
devotees to chant to the Lord Shiva while making their way down
to the hot springs which are believed to havemana. Each step was
donated by members of the temple. The members of the temple
who are devotees of Lord Shiva, the god we worship chanted his
holy recital while walking on the steps,mandirsecretary Kamal
Dutt said. It is one of the most popular Hindu mantras and the
most important mantra inShaivism. This mantra is dedicated to
Lord Shiva. There are 108 steps from the temple to the hot spring
and every devotee must recite theShivaprayers.
I grew up seeing how devoted our elders were during praying
and fasting, even to the extent where all female devotees would
sleep and pray at the temple for one or two weeks in search of
peace and guidance. He said devotees prayed at the temple, and
then make their way up to the hot spring to pray.
He said Hindus from here and overseas would visit the hot
spring every year and offer their prayers.

ctress Preeti Jhangiani, best
remembered for her role in
Mohabbatein, is a mother of two now,
and raring to go in showbiz. She says it is easy
for her to work compared to other mothers as
she has strong family support.
Preeti, who has been doing ads, shows and
regional films in the past few years, is returning
to Bollywood with upcoming film Wajood.
"I do wish to appear in more (Bollywood)
films now. I have a lot of support from my
family. There are people to look after my
children (Jaiveer and Dev) in my absence. In
fact, my mother and sister live in the same
building. It's much easier for me to work in
comparison to other mothers," Preeti said.
"Now, I am looking forward to doing more
work that will have good scripts. In terms of
(Bollywood) films, you can call this my second
innings in the industry since I am coming after
such a long time. But calling it a second inning
will make me feel as if my first one was done
and dusted. "It's not like that. Maybe not in
films, but I have been continuously working in
shows and ads. I was actually working during
my pregnancies also," she added.
Preeti, who got her Bollywood break
with Mohabbatein in 2000 and has done
movies in languages like Malayalam, Tamil,
Telugu, Kannada, Punjabi, Bengali and
Rajasthani, feels happy with the wave of
reality-based cinema.
"I don't think the audience wants to see the
same old romance drama and those type of
stories. They want to see films like Bareilly Ki
Barfi', which have real characters," Preeti said.
"In today's times, even if it's a commercial
film, it has to be real. I believe cinema is moving
away from the old format of filmmaking. The
audience laughs at a film in which the characters
don't look real," she added.
Unlike her happy-go-lucky image that
she has portrayed through her characters in
Bollywood so far, Preeti will be seen playing
an emotional role in Wajood.
"I am playing the mother of the child who
gets abducted in the film. The story is also
about her life and her relationship with two men
-- one is the father and the other is the one who
brought up the child," Preeti said.
"I connected 100 per cent with this character.
All the emotions were natural for me. Only a
parent can understand what another person
goes though when he or she loses a child. The
trauma makes you feel like killing the person,
who has abducted your child.
"That anger and frustration about not being
able to do anything -- there were a lot of
emotions I had to bring to the character," she
added.On preparing for the role, Preeti, who is "I
