Present your article on working with a person who is dying. Discuss how you feel about the
approaches presented in the articles. Consider how you would feel if you were terminally ill and
sought help. In what way would you like your human services worker to work with you?
Discuss unconditional positive regard. How does a clinician exhibit this quality? You may wish to add
copies of some or all of the articles presented to your personal Resource File.
Role-play: The team should select two members to conduct a role-play of a situation using person-
centered listening skills and emphasizing reflection of feeling. A team member will take the role of the
human services worker who is dealing with a person facing death. One student might role-play the
participant, one the human services worker. Each week the team will be expected to conduct a role
play relevant to that weeks theory. It is recommended that the team rotate those team members who
will conduct the role play for each week.
Remember that existential theory emphasizes respecting the clients beliefs and ability to grow. Do
not give advice. Do not persuade. Be with the client and listen.
Submit a Summary Report on the teams findings and discussion of the selected theory, and related
articles, for Week 1. Include a brief transcript of the role-play. Include the resources the team
investigated. This report/transcript should be between 500 and 1000 words long. All team members
who participated in this report/role-play should be listed on the cover sheet. Utilize APA format for the
paper and remember to submit your Certificate of Originality with any paper assignment, team or
individual, that is submitted.
o Conduct an Internet search for a professional article on a behavioral approach to working with an
issue or issues that you might encounter as a human services worker. Study the article and be
prepared to discuss your findings with your Learning Team. Each team
member should contribute his/her own article.
Meeting:
Discuss the results of your Internet search and identify appropriate behavioral tools for human
services workers. Identify the situations in which they might be used.
Perform a role-play of a human services worker using a tool from a behavioral model when working
with a participant. One or more students may take the role of the human services worker or workers
teaching a participant a relaxation process or another tool, perhaps one found on the Internet.
Discuss your experiences and what you might change in order to be more effective in the role of
clinician.

Describe the goal as target behaviors. What specific behaviors do you want to increase or decrease?
Break down your goals into attainable, measurable steps? Why is this goal(s) important to you? How

Summarize how this program will fit in your current life, and schedule, and your results(if you
implemented it during the week), or your anticipated short and long-term goals. Describe how you will
reward yourself for your progress.
Submit a behavioral management contract that states all of the above points and specifies both
internal and external consequences for actions in a realistic time frame, such as short-term rewards
for adhering to the contract and a long-term reward for meeting the goals. References are optional
and remember to submit your Certificate of Originality with any paper assignment, team or individual,
that is submitted if you do cite/reference other sources. The length of the contract is up to you, but be

Review the articles that team members found on cognitive interventions. Choose one method and
discuss how you might apply it when working with an elderly participant who has had a small stroke
and is fearful of falling, causing her to resist her physical therapy treatments. Alternatively, consider
using cognitive interventions with an adolescent who is trying to manage his anger.

Internet Search for Systems Theories Tools for Human Services Workers
o Search the Internet and professional journals of counseling, social work, employee assistance, or
other human services fields for two or three articles on systems theory and its application to human
services workers. Be prepared to discuss your articles with the Learning Team. Each team member
should contribute his/her own article for discussion.

this week. An annotated bibliography is one in which each of your references has a paragraph under
it that explains the relevance of the reference for your assignment, and why you chose to include it.

Systems Chart:
Begin to prepare a Systems Chart, due in Week Five, on a family system that the instructor will post in
your Learning Team Forum. This system will describe the structure of a sample family, and the family
dynamics. You will be able to observe the factors in the family that have a positive, or a negative,
influence on the family dynamics. Review the charting/graph samples in the text for examples of how
to develop a Systems Chart. Also, Genopro(look on the Internet) is a very good resource for
explanations of how to construct a family systems chart, with examples, and explanations of terms.

Your faculty member has assigned the team a particular family system to analyze and chart. As a
team, chart the system you have been assigned. Use drawing software, showing system dynamics
such as dyads and triads, factors contributing to homeostasis or upsetting the balance, closeness and
distance of members, and roles such as the clown, the scapegoat, the rescuer, or others.
Submit your chart with a brief explanation of it. Attach a one-page annotated bibliography of the top

Team: Here is the family system you will use to create your genogram/family systems graph for Week
5:
Shelley Blake is a 34 year-old, single mother. She is raising two children with the assistance of her
60 year old mother, Mabel.
Her two children are Steve, aged 11 years, and Martha, aged 9 years.
Shelley and her mother have a problematic relationship. Shelley is a recovered methamphetamine
addict, who has been clean for two years now. During her time under the influence, Shelley had
essentially abandoned her children, and Mabel took over their care for approximately 3 years. Mabel
deeply resented this and constantly reminds Shelley of her failings as a mother.
Shelley does not know who Steves father is, but Marthas father, Raoul, is also a recovering addict
who is attempting to rehabilitate and wants to get more involved with Shelley and the children. He
has begun coming over to the house several times a week. Mabel is adamantly opposed to this and
fears that Raoul will drag Shelley down into drug addiction again.
Steve has recently become an increasing problem for Shelley. He is beginning to strongly challenge
her authority as the mother, and she describes him as playing my mother and me off against each
other. Recently, his previously good school attendance and performance has been changing for the
worse. Mabel is concerned that Steve is gravitating to Raoul and may be negatively influenced by
him. Martha seems to be always anxious and clingy with Shelley. Shelley says that Marthas
constant need for attention and reassurance has been increasing steadily, and has become
exhausting.
Shelley indicates that the family never communicates as a unit, but rather has constant squabbles.
We can never agree on anything, she says.
