GROWTH ASSESSMENT 3

Personal Growth
When I decided to get my Masters of Arts in Educational Technology (EDTC), it was for

the purpose of personal growth. I wanted to better myself as an educator, and I was eager to see

what doors of opportunity would open to me with this degree. What I didnt anticipate was the

impact the program would have on my spiritual journey. Through my cadre mates support and

by the guidance of my professors, I have developed a deeper sense of spirituality . The program

has helped me persevere in times of adversity, and has given me strength to be the best husband,

father, friend, and educator that I can be.

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if

we do not give up. 1 Gal. 6:9 (New International version) Pauls teaching about perseverance

sums up my spiritual experience over the course of the last year. The faith component in this

program called for a deeper meaning of life and the relationship with God. The relationship with

God in the program has brought me closer to my wife and kids. Throughout the entire EDTC

program I had to distance myself from some of the responsibilities as a husband and father for

the sake earning my degree. My wife and kids have been extremely understanding and through

prayer we all can see the light at the end of the tunnel. That is why Paul's letter to the Galatians

is such an inspiring verse for me.

I am very appreciative of the faith-based component that Azusa Pacific University

(APU) offers. The forum interaction and the connections Ive made with my cadre mates has

been a source of inspiration from EDTC 511( Bacer, K, 2017) to now. They have been able to

share their life stories and faith within the forums of each class we have taken together. When I

felt low or confused, they always brought me back and reminded me that God has chosen this

path for us. I always knew that I was in the company of incredibly driven and spiritual peers.

Cadre 30 has helped me grow as an individual in Gods light.

In closing, each professor in the program brought their own special touch to my

individual learning and my growth as a Christian as well. I am extremely touched by their

involvement in my success as a professional and as a human being. Over the course of the last

year, I have grown in my faith and have felt Gods love through the individuals that will forever

touch my life.

Professional Growth
I have been a professional educator at the high school level for the greater part of a

decade. There came a point in my career in which I felt that I had reached a plateau and felt a

need to grow within my field. With this in mind, I chose to enter graduate school at APU and

work toward earning my degree in EDTC. In addition, I wanted become a better teacher for my

students. I felt if I molded my practice to better meet the 21st century student, I could create life

long learners. Finally, as part of the professional development leadership team at my site the

EDTC program has given me an opportunity to help my colleagues better their practice.

Over the course of the EDTC program I have become a better educator and have been

able to justify my reasoning for implementing technology in the classroom. Technology

applications and software is a great resource for educators to place in their toolbox. One such

tool that I have used with fantastic results is Google Sites. This resource was introduced in

EDTC 527 (Bettger, B, 2017), and I have used them as a wiki and teacher created webquest.

...early implementation of wikis in educational settings have shown that the more autonomy

teachers give to students in terms of negotiating the scope and quality of the content they are

creating, the better.( Richardson, pg 61, para 3) Using Google sites in the classroom has been

an extremely valuable asset to my teaching practices.

Todays students must be prepared to thrive in a constantly evolving technological

landscape. (ISTE, 2017, para 1) I now understand the value that educational technology has for

my students in the 21st century. With the growing demand for computer tech jobs and the ever

increasing use of applications and software, my students have been exposed to this style of

education in my classroom. Their interest level is being peeked with every technological lesson

that I conduct, and I feel that I am giving them a positive online footprint. As I have increased

their use of online databases and resources, I have seen a spike in comprehension of content. I

have analyzed my data using spreadsheets and google form add on applications taught in EDTC

520 (Silver, E, 2017). This program has given me the knowledge to help my students master the

content.

Finally, what I am most proud of in the EDTC program at APU is I have become a

technology leader at my school site. I have been apart of the professional leadership team for

two years. I have really blossomed in this role since joining this program. I have led multiple

PD sessions on technology such as the implementation of google forms as assessment tool,

nearpod, and the use of google documents as a collaboration tool for teachers and students. It

has been a joy in my career to help better my colleagues practices. Schools rise and fall based

on on the quality of the teamwork that occurs within their walls. (Sparks, para 1)

The EDTC program has reinvigorated my teaching, helped me to better prepare my

students to become lifelong learners, and guided me to become a mentor in technology on

campus.

Technical Growth

Education has been shifting to better meet the needs of our 21st century students.

Technology implementation has been one of the biggest changes that I have seen over the course

of my eleven years of teaching. For example, the mission statement at my school site is that,

Our graduates will be critical thinkers who communicate effectively, problem solve efficiently

and utilize technology appropriately. (Golden Valley High School, 2017) The technical skills

that I developed in the EDTC website design and video production.

I have never designed a website before and was not exposed to the educational

possibilities in its implementation. In EDTC 527 (Bettger, B, 2017), I was exposed to Google

Sites and how to create one for webquests and wikis. During the 2017 spring semester, I created

a google site for each unit of study. In each website I included videos, documents, slide

presentations, and maps that matched my content standards. Each website allowed for

independent practice and collaboration. Eventually, I created youtube tutorials for my students

to create their own google site and present content in a manner in which invigorated student

learning and gave them an opportunity to be creative. Data showed that their test scores

increased and mastery of the content was at the highest levels through this activity.

Videos creation has always been about creating memories for my family. Through the

EDTC program I can now create and implement video and web capturing in education through

Imovie, screencast-o-matic, green screen, and camtasia. I have now created many tutorials using

screencast-o-matic for the purpose of reference for my students and colleagues. For example, I

have created a professional development website for the social studies department at my site

which included video tutorials on google sites, nearpod, padlet, and google forms as an
GROWTH ASSESSMENT 7

assessment tool. According to the Cognitive Load Theory, ...noting that working memory has

two channels for information acquisition and processing: a visual/pictorial channel and an

auditory/verbal processing channel. (Mayer and Moreno, Para 7, 2003) Understanding this, I

feel that I am better educator and professional development leader through the creation of these

particular tutorials and videos.

Technology has always been something that I enjoyed tinkering with, but now I have a

passion for it. The skills learned in the EDTC program through web design and video opened the

immense possibilities it has for my students and peers.

Life Long Learning Plan

I intend to expand on the knowledge and skills learned in the EDTC program at APU. I

have made great strides in becoming a technology leader at my site throughout the last of year. I

plan on growing in the field of educational technology in many different ways. This is my life

long learning plan.

Our Shared History GLP- I plan to expand and launch my own GLP.

IEARN.org- Keep my subscription active and ongoing. Engage professionally in

meaningful global collaboration. Attend an online professional development workshop.

MOOC- Continue to enhance my knowledge of content through free online courses.

PLN and Professional Development- I plan to engage in online forum discussion

through twitter and other media outlets to better meet the needs of my peers and
colleagues.

Twitter Chats- Increase my twitter presence through educational chats and meaningful
dialogue with my peers.

ISTE Standards- Stay up to date on news and features through the International Society
for Technology in Education. I plan to attend the a ISTE conference in the future.
GROWTH ASSESSMENT 8

Conclusion

In conclusion, my personal and professional life will never be the same since joining the

EDTC program at APU. I feel that I am prepared to be a leader in technology at my school site

and within my district. I fully intend hon in on my technical skills and 21st century pedagogical

practice to accommodate the growing needs of my ever changing students. This program has

definitely invigorated my teaching and increased my love of education. In addition, I am
