IUSM
&
Indianapolis

The main campus of the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) is located in the
northwest quarter of downtown Indianapolis, on the Indiana University-Perdue University
(IUPUI) campus. In addition to the Indianapolis campus, there are 9 regional campuses located
throughout the state of Indiana. IUSM is one of the largest medical schools in the United States
and is composed of more than 60 clinical departments and specialties as well as a Graduate
Division for education in the Biomedical Sciences. The Graduate Division offers research based
degrees in areas including: Anatomy & Cell Biology, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Cellular
& Integrative Physiology, Medical and Molecular Genetics, Medical Neuroscience, Microbiology
& Immunology, Pathology, Pharmacology, Toxicology. There are also numerous
interdisciplinary research areas including: Alcohol & Addiction Research, Cell & Developmental
Biology, Computational Biology & Bioinformatics, Environmental Health, Skeletal Biology &
Orthopedics, Structural Biology, Cancer Biology, Chemical Biology, Diabetes & Metabolic
Disorders, Gene Transfer/Gene Therapy, Stem Cell Biology, Vascular Biology. Students in the
M.S. program can avail themselves of courses and research opportunities in any of these
areas.
Indianapolis is located in the center of Indiana and is the largest city and capital of Indiana.
With a metropolitan population of approximately 2 million people, Indianapolis is the nation's
twelfth largest city. Indianapolis is known as a major sports mecca and each year hosts the
famous Indy 500 and Brickyard 400 Races. Indianapolis also is home to the NBA Pacers, NFL
Indianapolis Colts, and minor league teams in baseball (Indianapolis Indians) and hockey
teams (Indiana Ice). Indianapolis is not all about sports, and there are many noteworthy
museums available for visitors such as the Indianapolis Museum of Art, Eiteljorg Museum of
American Indians & Western Art, and Conner Prairie Living
History Museum to name a few. Besides museums Indianapolis is
home to the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Indianapolis
Repertory Theatre and Madam Walker Theatre Center which are
close to campus and very affordable. In addition, within the last
10-15 years major renovations within the downtown area have
lead to the development of shopping venues and restaurants for
every palate and pocketbook.
Outside of the downtown area itself, the Indianapolis metropolitan area includes beautiful
countryside, farms, and suburban communities, which serve as living areas for students. There
are also many beautiful parks, including the Eagle Creek Park and Nature Preserve, which is
one of the largest city parks in the United States.
