1.0 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This report is about new product development of motorcycle cover. Based on the
statistics from JPJ (Malaysia) for year 2006, approximately around 7.5 million or 47% of
Malaysian road users are motorcyclist [1]. One of the major contributions behind this big
figure is due to the increase of fuel cost. In general, a motorcycle can be afforded with much
lower price compared to almost any type of four wheeled vehicles. The low fuel consumption
is also one of the major attractions in procuring this vehicle. Plus, another additional merit is
the ease in traveling time especially during heavy traffic condition in Malaysia. After that, as
we know, due to unpredictable weather in Malaysia nowadays, many motorcycle owners
especially prolonging riders prefer to have a portable motorcycle cover. For this reason, the
idea of a motorcycle cover fits the case. The basic function is to be able to protect the driver
from rain and coming wind especially from front and top direction. However, this motorcycle
cover design is applicable for static use only. In addition, based on our observations on the
recent motorcycle covers product, the products produced are difficult to carry and to set up.
Therefore, we aim to develop a new model of motorcycle cover that can be used in static
condition. Next, we also want to develop portable and foldable motorcycle cover that will not
disturbing the motorcyclists during in motion, take less time to set up and can maintain the
aesthetic value of any motorcycles. Besides, we also always consider of having a right
selection of structure material; therefore it can be used in a long period. The reliability and
capability of the motorcycle cover is depends on the design of its structure where it should be
simple, sturdy and easy to carry. The design of its structure is sketch by hand and using CAD
software.

2.0 INTRODUCTION

Based on the statistics from JPJ (Malaysia) for year 2006, approximately
around 7.5 million or 47% of Malaysian road users are motorcyclist. One of the major
contributions behind this big figure is due to the increase of fuel cost. In general, a
motorcycle can be afforded with much lower price compared to almost any type of four
wheeled vehicles. The low fuel consumption is also one of the major attractions in procuring
this vehicle. Plus, another additional merit is the ease in traveling time especially during
heavy traffic condition in Malaysia. However, one of the major drawbacks for motorcyclist is
to travel in the unpredictable weather condition. For this reason, the idea of a motorcycle
cover fits the case. The basic function is to be able to protect the driver from rain and coming
wind especially from front and top direction. However, this motorcycle cover design is
applicable for static used only.
Furthermore this motorcycle cover can also be used as a cover for motorcycle while
parking to protect the motorcycle from the weather. This product very useful and suitable for
college resident and any motorcycle user that dont have garage to store the
motorcycle.Motorcycle part was made by many type of steel but it also can rust if it is face
wet and dry weather. So we develop this product to solve the problem occur by the
motorcycle user mostly for college student.
This product also portable and foldable to minimize the used of space and easily to
used while raining. From our research and view the motorcyclist need to find a bridge to
covered themself when raining so with our product they dont need to find bridge along the
road while raining and only need to used the motorcycle cover, they also dont need to wear
raincoat that make them become uncomfortable.
So, based on the establishment in road layout design (blueprint for Iskandar Malaysia)
of standard design criteria for all users is important to produce a successful, attractive and
safe road to all modes of transport. The following design dimensions and parameters for road
design shall be considered in designing motorcycle cover. Figure 1 shows
motorcycle design dimension for motorcyclists.

1.1 Research Methodology
Our product ideas was generate by the concept of umbrella, camping tents, convertible
car and also mosquito net. For this new product development we need to gain more data
about what is the customer need and also to know how far this product will take in the
market. There are several method we used to gain data:
1. Questionair
-In the questionair form there are several aspect that we ask to the respondent to get
the data such as how much they know about the product and what they need to
improve the product. We used google doc as our method to run the questionair. Our
target respondent is the motorcycle user.
2. Research
-For the research,we used internet to get the old data about accident occur because of
the weather and also to get the design specification for motorcycle safety. We also use
internet to get the ideas and design concept to develop this product
- We also read the thesis about innovative design of parking system to get the concept
by our senior faculty of mechanical and other thesis to give the result of our finding.

3.0 NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

3.1 DEFINITIONS

This motorcycle cover is created to all motorcyclists since we decide to design a motorcycle
cover that can be used in unpredicted weather and also can protect motorcycle from the
weather. We take design inspiration from convertible car, camping tents and umbrella (up to
toe). In design terms, the conceptual design is defined as a phase in the evolution of product
design where alternative design concepts are generated, evaluated and selected for further
development [2-3]. Similar like any other product, initially the design process is the
triggered by the act of creative thinking, either by the normal process of recognizing the
needs or naturally-incoming ideas.

3.2 CLASSIFICATION OF NDP

Our new product development classification is under improvements and revisions to existing
products. In this product, we features lighter structure and made some modifications to
current product in their dimensions so the optimum space consuming is achieved. We also
offer assemble structures that mounted by hinges so that it can be foldable to compact
structure, hence make less space is consumed. Our product also offers lowered priced
products. Although it is difficult to produce a high quality produced over this lower price, but
since we manage to design a simpler structure, the challenge is overcome successfully.

3.3 NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT PROCESS

3.3.1 RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT

After having some brainstorming sessions, we manage to get some conceptual designs.
However, after having discussion and analyze each one of them, we finalize our new product
design as below.

Basically, the production of the motorcycle cover can be divided into several components
which is monorech, transparent sheet, canvas and frame structure. The monorech acts as the
rear backbone support for the product when used. The frame structure is backbone supports
the product on every side. The canvas is the main protector on the upper, rear and side
portion. The transparent sheet is the protector at visor area on front side.

3.3.2 PRODUCT DESIGN/ FEATURES

During conceptual design process, we take design inspiration from convertible car,
camping tents and umbrella (up to toe). Then, we start our aim to design portable, foldable,
simple, sturdy and easy to carry motorcycle cover structure. Besides, we are also always
considering the technical and economic criteria such as its functionality, working principle,
aesthetic value, ergonomics and safety. In our new product development of motorcycle cover,
the reason we design portable and foldable structure because we want to maintain the
aesthetic value of every type of motorcycles. Many motorcyclists refuse to use motorcycle
cover because it will make their motorcycles appearance becomes less attractive. Besides,
although it seems to have less functionality than current products, but since out target is to all
motorcyclists including prolonging riders, the covers that can be used during motion usually
disturb the rider posture and also make the probability of counter steering to happen becomes
higher during corner. So, we design easy to install and easy to dismantle motorcycle cover,
since we aim to have high safety aspect. The material that we used for the structure is
aluminium. Aluminium have high resistance corrosion, antirust and light. The light is desired
property as the motorcycle has to maintain its stability. The bonus property for aluminium is
the low cost material. For the cover, we use two type of canvas. The first one is transparent
sheet and the other one is color canvas. The detailed design and design dimensions of our
structure are as follows:

4.0 Conclusion

Referring to the initial objective plan of this project, which is to create a base
design for a motorcycle cover, basically the objective has been achieved. In terms if design
contents, basically the designer have managed to produce a base design which is practical,
applicable and appropriate to use. Other design basic such as the ergonomic fixing method,
selection of reliable and affordable material and also other factors has also been considered
throughout the design project for the benefit of the end users.

Based on our survey there are a lot of feedback, positive and negative but mostly of
the feedback from the respondent give a positive feedback that told us that they were looking
around for the product in the market. Based on the survey we conclude that this product will
go high if it can be fabricate and sold with low price suitable for our target customer but there
are also some respondent that tell us the product will become dangerous if it was use while
riding. Although the product has its limitation but it has market value in the future. Even
though this product still needed improvement but from our observation it has unique
specification and will be useful for motorcyclist.

From the product design we already consider about the safety of our product user by
doing research about the safety by referring blueprint by iskandar malasia to develop a
product that safe for all transport modes.
