1. BRIEF INTRODUCTION AND STRUCTURE OF THE RESEARCH PAPER

The selected research paper discusses about the various initiatives that are emerging to improve
Business processes and the essential roles and contributions of Business Analyst and Business
Process Management professionals with regards to such initiatives. The roles and responsibilities
of a BA or BPM practitioner typically require different skill-sets; however these differences are
often vague. While both the BA and BPM communities have made attempts to describe their
domains through capability defining empirical research and developments of Bodies of
knowledge, there has not yet been any attempt to identify the commonality of skills required and
points of uniqueness between the two professions. This study as per the paper, aims to address
this gap and presents the findings of a detailed content mapping exercise of the International
Institution of Business Analysis, guide to the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge (BABOK)
against core BPM competency and capability frameworks.
The paper further talks about how the companys today have rapidly moved from a manual
driven approach to a process driven approach. How the firms and organizations across the world
are now using the various tools and techniques to a greater extent and this in turn has led to the
challenges that include; integrating environmental, data, and various other connected aspects.

process strategy, governance and general organizational process awareness.

capabilities of these two roles, through technology.

4. CONCLUSION/CRITICISMS
From my level of understanding the research question identified by the authors is a common and
most widely considered question today; The objective of this paper was to explore the alignment
between the role of a Business Analyst as identified in the IIBA Body of Knowledge (BABOK
Guide) and those of a BPM practitioner as identified in two widely accepted BPM competency
and capability frameworks. To meet this objective, the paper commenced with an introductory
background and then discussed recent attempts at professionalizing the BA and BPM disciplines.

The paper was very simple and provided insights directly about these two professions and the
changes they have undergone from its evolution till now. There are a few challenges or
improvement points which I have identified from this paper. Namely:
This paper could have been elaborated more in the areas of how the processes, principles
and concepts can be made more flexible depending on the situations and business
requirements of these roles.

The use of technology, i.e. about the next generation technology and specific examples
could have been given under each type of the professions.
