Process

First day/ Date Assigned: Find/Read the play, or at least a synopsis, and research some

general history involving the original production and how it came to be.

Re-read the play, paying more attention to my character, and noting the

relationships they have with others, the relationship to their words and

melodies, and their given circumstances.

Print out the music, and listen to the original cast recording to get an idea. Then,

abandon what was recorded, and work at the piano on the melody, and the

relationship between the melody and the lyrics given.

Type out the lyrics only, and say them as a monologue. Get to understand the

lyric journey, the beat changes, and the characters relationship to the words.

Begin to incorporate the melody in with the lyrics, without the full

accompaniment. Choose the notes and allow the words to influence the choice.

Allow for point of view to shine through. Decisions, discoveries, obstacles, and

moments of strong emotion. Really see images, and make thoughts specific to

character and plot.

Keep trying new things! Trial and error is the only way to find out what is

possible for the character. Ask new questions in search of new answers.

Note the things that are working best, what could improve, and repeat.
