Subject English

Grade Level 12

Learning Objective 11.4 The student will read, comprehend, and analyze
relationships among American literature, history, and culture.

e) Analyze how context and language structures convey an

authors intent and viewpoint.
f) Explain how the sound of a poem (rhyme, rhythm,
onomatopoeia, repetition, alliteration, assonance, and
parallelism) supports the subject, mood, and theme.
Activity The goal of this assignment is to familiarize the students with
common elements of poetry that will help them fulfill the SOL
stated above. The Interactive White Board assignment will be
worked through with the entire class and the participation of
the students. The teacher will begin the lesson with this activity
and use it to either review or introduce elements of poetry to
the class. To begin the activity the students will be grouped by
the presented sections, Theme, Figurative Language, Form,
Tone/Mood, Imagery, and Sound Devices. The students will talk
with their group to establish their knowledge and questions for
their particular topic. The goal of group interaction will be to
have the group come to the board and walk the class through
their section of the interactive whiteboard activity. For example,
the students who have Theme would come to the white board
and express their combined knowledge of the subject before
beginning. At this juncture the teacher can correct or add to
what the students say in order to establish a good start to the
activity. The students will then tap on their term to continue. To
use Theme as an example, the students will then choose, or ask
the class to choose, the bubbles 1, 2, or 3 to press. After that
choice is made, the students will click on the bubble and review
the given poem. The students can read the poem to the class or
the students can read it themselves, but the goal will be to have
the students at the front of the class discuss what they think the
theme of the poem is. In order to help with this, the Theme
slides have a tab that can be pulled at the upper right-hand
corner. Other slides have similar features such as the Sound
Devices section having an ear to click and hear different
Pedagogy

onomatopoeias. The pen feature of the white board can then be

used to write ideas about the theme that the students have
besides what is written on the green tab. Other examples of
using the pen would be writing examples of words and phrases
that emphasize the sounds heard and the images seen in the
Imagery section of the assignment. Over all, the students will
use the interactive features on the whiteboard to utilize the
content on the board and then they will use the pen feature to
add examples and clarification to those contexts. Each section of
the activity will focus analyzing the example poems to show
authorial intent and viewpoint and how those elements support
the poem. While the students work through the board together,
the teacher will act as aid and give assistance when needed, but
the goal will be to have the students interact with the board and
each other to make a simple display of poetic devices deepen
their knowledge of poetry through critical thinking and
discussion. This activity can be completed in one or two class
periods depending on the time of class.
