Probability & Statistics
Course Description
This course is designed to cover the fundamentals of probability and statistics. Statistics is the
field of math used to collect and interpret data while probability predicts outcomes based on measurable
trends. In a nut shell the two are used to organize and interpret the world around us. From scientific
analysis and sports strategy to government planning and business marketing probability and statistics is
at work just about everywhere we look. This course is rich with advanced formulas and requires critical
thinking skills. As a student in this class you will be expected to observe and interpret trends in data and
outcomes as well as memorize and apply advanced equations.

Class Rules
Respect yourself, your classmates, the classroom and the Teacher.
Food and drinks are okay but you are responsible for your mess. If you do not clean up
after yourself, the WHOLE class will lose food and drink privileges.
Hats and beanies are okay but NO hoods. All clothing must follow school dress code. If
they become a distraction the WHOLE class will lose this privilege.
Gum is allowed. However, if you gum is not thrown away properly the privilege will be
lost for everyone. Those seen placing gum under desks or elsewhere will be required to
serve Gum Duty, come in at lunch and scrape gum off of the desks.
Cell Phones are allowed for educational purposes only at Mr. Haffners discretion. If
misused there will be no warning, I will take it.
Headphones are not allowed. There will be no warning, if I see it I will take it.
School tardy and attendance policy will be followed. You are responsible for any work
you miss. Anything you do not make up can hurt your learning.

Religious Holidays
Reasonable accommodations will be made for you to observe religious holidays when such
observances require you to be absent from class activities. It is your responsibility to inform me
during the first two weeks of class, in writing, about such holidays.

Daily Class and Homework Materials


Students are required to have a notebook with binder paper, graph paper and a pencil.
Graphing Calculators are also expected everyday for the class. These are the predominate
tool we will be using for class work and homework.
A notebook set aside note taking and for reflection on topics and vocabulary.
Performance Requirements and Evaluation
The majority of credit earned in this class and reflected on your GRADE is from tests and quizzes. It is
your responsibility to keep in mind upcoming test dates and to make up any missed tests and quizzes.
Homework is also a large part of testing as it helps you practice new ideas and critically reflect on your
progress allowing you to ask questions that better help your learning. There will also be group projects
and group work that add to your grade.

A 90% - 100% Class work 10%
B 80% - 89.99% Homework 15%
C 70% - 79.99% Quizzes 15%
D 60% - 69.99% Projects 20%
F 0% - 59.99% Tests 20%
Final Exam 20%

There will daily homework assignments. Students are expected to complete and turn in
homework the day after it has been assigned. Unexcused late work will not be accepted. If you
are absent from class you have the number of class days missed to turn in your homework
assignments. (ex; if you miss 2 days of class then you have 2 days from your return to class to
turn in all homework assignments from your absence.)

Classroom and Work Policies


You are in your seat ready to work when the bell rings with all materials necessary for
class.
Students are responsible for their assigned textbook from the class set. If the textbook
goes missing, the student assigned to the textbook will be given a book bill fee. Beware
of lending books.
Students are to take notes that work for them. However, students must copy down
example problems, definitions, and formulas.
Students are to clean up after themselves prior to the end of class. Any mess left will
result in the loss of privileges or discipline.
Homework must have work shown including answers to receive full credit. To receive
credit on turned in homework you must include your full name, the homework number
and your class period. Late homework will not be accepted.

Math Help
Students are encouraged to come in for math tutoring. I will be available during lunch
throughout the week and after school Monday, Wednesday and Friday in my room with
exceptions.
