2. A plane wave in air with an electric field amplitude of 20 V/m is incident

normally upon the surface of a lossless, nonmagnetic medium with r = 25.
Determine the following:
(a) The reflection and transmission coefficients.
(b) The standing-wave ratio in the air medium.
(c) The average power densities of the incident, reflected, and transmitted waves.

3. A 50-MHz plane wave with electric field amplitude of 50 V/m is normally

incident in air onto a semi-infinite, perfect dielectric medium with r = 36.
Determine the following:
(a)
(b) The average power densities of the incident and reflected waves.
(c) The distance in the air medium from the boundary to the nearest minimum of
the electric field intensity, |E|.

4. The three regions shown in the figure below contain perfect dielectrics. For a
wave in medium 1, incident normally upon the boundary at z=d, what
combination of r2 and d produces no reflection? Express your answers in terms of
r1, r3 and the oscillation frequency of the wave, f.
5. A plane wave in air with
E i = y20ej(3x+4z)
is incident upon the planar surface of a dielectric material, with r = 4, occupying
the half-space z 0. Determine:
(a) The polarization of the incident wave.
(b) The angle of incidence.
(c) The time-domain expressions for the reflected electric and magnetic fields.
(d) The time-domain expressions for the transmitted electric and magnetic fields.
(e) The average power density carried by the wave in the dielectric medium.

6. Consider a plane wave incident from a dielectric with r = 4.0 to air at f=3GHz as
shown below.

a) Calculate the critical angle c .

b) Write down an expression for the incident magnetic field given that its magnitude
is H 0 .
c) Write down an expression for the refracted magnetic field given that its
magnitude is H t .
d) If the magnitude of the electric field at x=7.8mm is half its value at the interface
(x=0 ) calculate the angle of incidence .
e) Determine the real propagating power in air along the x-axis x>0. Assume
> c .
