The child care center at Richard J. Daley promotes language development and

literacy development. I observed the West preschool classroom at Richard J. Daley on

October 2, 2014 and October 21, 2014. The teacher child ratio in the west room is 2:13.

The head teacher is Mrs. Ortega; Ms. Nancy Ortiz is the assistant teacher for the west

room.

In the reading area the children were sitting down in a shape of a circle on the rug.

I noticed a felt board emotion chart in the reading area, large dry erase board. That said

Good Morning West Room Today is Thursday October 2, 2014.The teacher that

instructed the children in the reading area was Ms. Ortiz. She was also sitting down with

the children in her left hand she was holding cards. The children were identifying the

names of different emotions, facial expressions. When she showed the children a card

they were to answer the emotion that was shown. Such as Angry/No hada then a child

that answers the question correctly .they were able to stand up and place card on a felt

board.. This activity promotes language, literacy development, social and emotional

development. Because the children identified the words, names of different emotions in

both languages English and Spanish.

The west room at Richard J. Daley promotes literacy development and cognitive

was a big bulletin board that stretched over the computer area and the writing area of the

students writing samples. There writing samples consist of names, dates of all of the

children in the west classroom. There were children in the computer area working on

computer learning, playing, exploring. The computer area promotes literacy because the

children were playing games from an educational website with letters, word, names and

numbers.

In the writing area /area de escrtura lables there was children seated at the table

writing. The children were practicing on numbers, spelling also writing their name. The

writing utensils they used a pencil, crayons and a sheet of white paper. The writing area

has pencils, different types of paper like organized, lined paper and stencil. Richard J.

Daley child care center promotes writing, reading, literacy. They have and use their

writing area available for the children to use.

While I was observing the west class room I noticed the wooden cubbies in a row.

All of the cubbies were labeled with child's name for example: Mark, a picture of Mark.

Has a change of clothing T-shirt, pants, socks, under clothes in a Ziploc bag. In side of

his cubby there was a green sweater hung up on his hook. Their cubbies, chairs, tables

are all at their level, labeled. Each student has their own chair that is labeled with their

name example: Mark. I noticed the positive teacher interaction with the students. I also

noticed eight multi - cultural puppets in the listening area. That offers the children to
