EEE 342 Feedback Control Systems

Fall 2013-2014 - Homework #2

Due: 2 October 2013, Wednesday 17:00 to Prof. Blent zglers mailbox
Q.1 A dynamic system is shown in figure below. Obtain the differential equations describing
the system.

Q.2 An interacting control system with two inputs and two outputs is shown in the figure
below. Solve for 1 ()/1 () and 2 ()/2 () when 2 () = 0.
Q.3 A satellite single-axis attitude control system can be represented by the block diagram in
the figure below. The variables k, a, b and c are controller and plant parameters and J is the
spacecraft moment of inertia.
Suppose the nominal moment of inertia is = 10.88 ( 2 ), and the controller and
plant parameters are = 10.88, = 2, = 10, = 2, = 3.

a.) Develop an m-file script to compute the closed loop transfer function of the system
b.) Compute and plot the step response to a 100 step input
c.) The exact moment of inertia is generally unknown and may change slowly with time.
Compare the step response performance of the spacecraft when J is reduced by 20%
and 50% by using the same controller and plant parameters. Discuss your results.
Q.4 Consider the feedback system depicted in the following figure.

Controller Plant
() + 1 2 + 5 ()
- +2 +6

a.) Compute the closed-loop transfer function using the series and feedback functions.
b.) Obtain the closed-loop system unit step response with the step function, and find the
final value of the output.
Q.5

Consider the circuit above, KCL for the circuit gives

1 1
() = () + ( ()) + () where ( ) = 0.8 ; RC=10sec.
1+2
It is known that the input () = + () will result in an output () = + ()
where |()| | | and |()| | |.
a.) Determine the input () = in order to keep the output at the equilibrium
() = = 1
b.) Linearize this syustem around ( , ) and determine the transfer function ()/().
