Class Goals and Objectives


Students will become familiar with how to determine macrobeats.

Materials
Bucket drum
Drum sticks
Recording of We Are the Champions by Queen
Recording of Sing by the Pentatonix

Procedures

1. Students will discuss sports with the teacher.


a. Sports fans? How many people have been to a sporting event?
b. Relating to the water/ocean unit, what kind of water sports can you think of?
i. Kayaking
ii. Rowing
iii. Water skiing
iv. Surfing
c. What kinds of music do you hear at a sporting event? What might a team listen to
if they win?
2. Students will listen to We Are The Champions and while completing the perception chart.
a. Teacher will walk around and use proximity to monitor answers.
3. Students will discuss the answers of the perception chart.
a. Play through portions of the song.
4. Students will count to six and be asked to count in their head.
5. Students will listen to a portion of We Are The Champions and fill out the rhythmic
dictation sheet.
a. Students will discuss where they put the X markings.
6. Students will recite ta-ka-di-mi syllables with the rhythm that the drums are playing in
We Are The Champions.
a. Ask what syllable lines up with their Xs that they have marked on their paper.
b. Explain that this song has two big beats and is in two.
7. Students will practice this rhythm with no accent, then again with accent.
8. Students will listen to Sing and fill out the rhythmic dictation sheet.
a. Students will discuss where they put the X markings.
b. Explain that this song has four big beats and is in four.
9. Students will listen as the instructor plays rhythms on the board.
a. Students will model the pattern in ta-ka-di-mi
b. Students will play the rhythm on the bucket drum.
10. Students will complete the exit ticket
