ORIGINS OF CLAN JETTIES
The emergence of Clan jetties occurred as the residents from China moved to
Penang in 19th century. Due to no housing options in Georgetown, various
jetties appeared and fell away at different periods, between the late 19th
century to the 1960s.
This settlement caused the reclamation of GeorgeTown Waterfront shoreline
to extend outwards.
This reclamation lead to new streets and new settlements, which further
developed into Clan Jetties.

CLAN JETTIES, 1975

Lim, Chew and Lee Jetty were involved in Harbour activities. Hence, people
living on these jetties were boats men, and staff people transporting cargo
from shore to shore.
Tan, Yeoh and Koay Jetty were involved in firewood and charcoal trading.
They collected raw materials available at the mangroves near the shore line
which coexisted at the jetties.
They started off as eight jetties and at present remain only six jetties
