5.Learningoutcomesofthecurricularunit
ThecoursewillfocusonthethemesconcerningthehistoricalsourcesofthePortugueselanguage,with
reference to other disciplines (history, culture and literature) and to methodological principles of
TextualCriticism.
Theunitisplannedtogivethestudentsthenecessarytools,referenceworksandknowledgeofthestate
of the art: being acquainted with reference works and through the study of illustrative cases, the
students should be able to combine both theoretical knowledge and interpretive trends in Textual
Criticism.
The main goals are to prepare students to: (1) identify and classify linguistic changes in a written
document (2) prepare a critical edition (3) develop skills enabling them to gathering, describing and
interpretingdatainthedomainofhistoricallinguistics,makinggeneralizationsanddrawingconclusions
beyondtheillustrativecasesstudiedinclassand(4)demonstrateacommandofmethodsandstrategies
foranalyzingandinterpretingtexts.

um corpus de trabalho adequado para a recolha, classificao e anlise de dados (corpora, atlas

(1) From Latin to Portuguese: phonological, morphological, syntactic and lexical changes (2) brief
descriptionofthePortugueselanguageofthe15th16thcenturies(mainfeatures,grammaticalchanges)
(3)textualsourcesforthestudyofthehistoryofthePortugueselanguage(thewrittendocumentasa
toolforreconstruction:someillustrativecasestudies)(4)TextualCriticismandHistoricalLinguistics(the
role of linguistic elements in the establishment ofthe text, the relevance of philological and linguistic
expertise) (5) methodological procedures and analytic tools in the area of Historical Linguistics and
TextualCriticism(corpora,linguisticatlases,grammarsandwrittentexts).
7.Demonstrationofthesyllabuscoherencewiththecurricularunit'sobjectives
The syllabus is conceived so as to familiarize the students with the extensive body of work produced
withinthethematicdomainofthecurricularunitandorienttheminfindingtheirownwaythroughthe
bibliography. It will also provide the theoretical, conceptual and methodological tools which the
students need to be able to understand and evaluate the conflicting theses debated in the literature.
ThecoursestartswithathoroughdescriptionoftheevolutionfromLatintoPortuguese(phonological,
morphological,syntacticandlexical)inordertosetthestageforadiscussionoftheevolutionandthe
grammarofthefifteenth/sixteenthcentury.Thesecondhalfofthecourseoffersasurveyofthescribal
phenomenathatoccurredduringthetransmissionofatext,andwhichledtotextualvariants,including
bothcopyingerrorsandintentionalchanges.

Metodologia:serfeitaumaintroduosgrandeslinhasdoestadodaarterelativamenteaotemado
seminrio,deformaasuportarleiturasautnomaspelosestudantes,eseroapresentadoseutilizados
os conceitos relevantes da Lingustica Histrica e da Crtica Textual. Haver um acompanhamento
tutorialquernoplanodasleiturasintrodutriasquernoplanodaarticulaoentreteoriasetrabalho
emprico.

8.Teachingmethodologies(includingevaluation)
Teaching methodology: an introduction to the main lines of the state of the art with respect to the
themeofthecurricularunitwillbeoffered,inordertosupportsubsequentautonomousreadingsbythe
students,andtherelevantlinguisticandhistoricalconceptswillbepresentedandputtouse,aswellas
the relevant methodologies. General competence and skills for linguistic research in the area will be
obtained by guiding the students through initial reading and by articulating theoretical and applied
teachingwithautonomousstudyandtutorialsupport.
Evaluation: short presentations of specialized themes and a written essay, with critical edition and
linguisticanalysisoftexts.
9.Demonstrationofthecoherencebetweentheteachingmethodologiesandthelearningoutcomes
ThiscurricularunitapproachesthehistoryofthePortugueselanguagethroughkeytopicsinHistorical
LinguisticandTextualCriticism.Besidesthedescriptivepath,andinteractingwithit,thecourseincludes
a thorough approach to interpretation and linguistic analysis of mediaeval texts. As texts display the
state of the language through time in a range of contexts, working with texts aims at providing the
studentswithinstrumentsthatenablethemtodevelopcompetenceatdescribingandinterpretingdata
inthedomainofhistoricallinguistics.
Wewilladdressthegoalsin(1)classandgroupdiscussions(2)assignedreadings(3)aresearchpaper
thatdemonstratesknowledgeofcriticismandmethodology.Thecombineduseofthattypeofclasses
and the evaluation system allows students to both expand their linguistic, theoretical and
methodologicalknowledge,andtodevelopsomeskillsandabilities,allinlinewiththedemandsofthis
cycleandstageofstudies.
