What is Suggestopedia method?

Suggestopedia method is a method developed by a Bulgarian doctor and

psychotherapist Georgi Lozanov. It is a method of teaching that is based on how the
human brain works and how we learn most effectively. This methodology focuses more
on self-exploration learning, which means that the students develop their own ideas and
knowledge based on the guidance of their teachers. Suggestopedia is originally and
widely used for the learning of the foreign language as it is believed that this
methodology can help learning foreign language by three times quicker than the other
methodologies.

How does the suggestopedia works? Suggestopedia is derived from the word
suggest and pedagogy. In order to use the suggestopedia method, the classroom
environment must be rich in sensory development and relaxing, the methodology
involves the usage of sensory which can be helped by learning aids such as colourful
pictures, props, music, and more. The suggestopedia method adopts 4 stages of
carefully structured approach;

1.Presentation

The teacher than have to make sure that the students is confident and is at the state of
pseudo-positive for the method to really work on them. Teachers also have to make
sure that their students are relaxed.

2. First Concert (Active concert)

It is optional for the students to close their eyes but they are advised to do so, this is to
soak in all of the words and feels of the presentation prepared by the teachers.
Dramatic reading of texts accompanied by classical music is often used as the
presentation for the learning of foreign language.
3. Second Concert (Passive concert)

Music is carefully chosen and played, while the texts are quietly read in the background.
The students are to remained relaxed and soak in all of the materials.

4. Practice

Games, puzzles, quizzes, and other exercises can be used to review and amalgamate
the learning process.
What is Silent-way method?

The silent way method is a methodology developed by the Europe educator Caleb
Gattegno in the early 1970s. He is well known for the use of coloured sticks which is
called the Cuisenaire rods. The rods are used for the learning of introductory reading
which sounds are thought by colours.

The silent-way method focuses on self-learning; learners work with whatever

resources that they have and produce language as much as they could while the
teachers are to remain as silent as possible; only talking when correcting or facilitating
the lesson.

This method helps learners to be more independent and responsible, acquiring inner-
criteria by the silent-way method. With the help of learning-aid objects, the learners
discover and create their own knowledge by problem solving rather than remembering
and repeating facts. They are responsible for what they learn and understand, making
them more committed to the lessons.

In this method, the pedagogical materials that can be effectively used are;

1. Word Chart

2. The Fidel

3. Cuisenaire Rods

4. A pointer

5. The Sound / Colour Rectangle Chart
