Abstract
Objective: To determine the influence of catgut implantation in the healing
process of superficial wounds in Sprague Dawley rats. Methods: Sprague
Dawley rats (female albino rats, 200-220 grams), were used for a preclinical
research. Two groups of animals were formed: Group I (Control): An
experimental wound (Catgut Implantation) was performed to each animal
without receiving any treatment, Group II (Study group): These animals were
performed the wound and received the treatment at the same time. Animals
were sacrificed eight days after having received the treatment and the wound
was performed. Animals from both groups were weighed before beginning the
study and after finishing it. Results: Healing by macroscopic observation
(retraction of the wound which is measured daily and at the same hour with a
Vernier caliper) was determined and the results were scored. Daily
measurements of wound retraction from animals of both groups (Control and
Study) were compared. Also the differences found between the wound
retraction of the untreated animals and the wound retraction of animals with
acupuncture treatment, were determined. Histopathological differences found
when comparing biopsies from animals of both groups once the study was
ended (Day 8) let us to know the evolution of the healing process.
Conclusions: Catgut implantation did not influence on the healing process in
superficial wounds in Sprague Dawlley rats.
