What is motion sickness?
Motion sickness (seasickness, car sickness) is a general sense of not feeling well, nausea, vomiting, headache, and
sweating that is caused by repeated motion. It develops when the inner ear, the eyes, and other areas of the body
that detect motion send conflicting messages to the brain. Any type of transportation can cause motion sickness.
Children are more susceptible to motion sickness than adults. About half of children between the ages of 4 and 10
experience dizziness and nausea when travelling by car, airplane or boat. Girls tend to be more susceptible than
boys.
What are the symptoms of motion sickness?
The most common signs and symptoms of motion sickness include:

 Nausea
 Increased salivation
 Vomiting
 Pale skin
 Perspiration
 Dizziness
 Headache

Tips to prevent motion sickness

If your child suffers from motion sickness here are some tips for preventing the nausea and dizziness:

 Have something for the child to do in the car that won`t make him nauseous. Don`t let him read while
traveling.
 Overeating often triggers motion sickness. Avoid heavy, spicy and fat-rich foods during the trip.
 Stay away from strong food smells.
 Avoid smoking in the car when your child is with you.
 Give him dry crackers.
 Try to choose a seat where the child will experience the least motion. In a car ask him to look at the distant
scenery. On a boat, go up with the child on the deck and watch the motion of the horizon. In an airplane, sit
over the wings, by the window and look outside.

Treatment for motion sickness

The best way to treat motion sickness is to stop the motion. If you can’t stop the motion, the child should sit or lie
down in an area with the least motion.

Homeopathic treatment for motion sickness

Homeopathy provides a safe, effective and fast acting treatment for motion sickness. It can be used to prevent and
treat dizziness, nausea and vomiting and will help you enjoy your trip.
Homeopathic medicines are a safe treatment for your children with no side effects. Children adore the sweet
homeopathic pellets.
The most useful homeopathic medicines are listed below:
 Borax helps people with seasickness and airsickness. Dizziness and nausea are due to downward motion,
such as during the landing of an airplane or roller coaster.
 Cocculus indicus - The person feels extreme weakness and dizziness. Watching moving objects worsens
nausea and headache. Staying in a warm car or room relieves the symptoms.
 Ipeca - Constant nausea with vomiting that does not bring any relief. Mouth full of saliva, clean tongue and
lack of thirst in spite of frequent vomiting.
 Nux vomica works best for impatient and irritable individuals with nausea and vomiting that brings relief.
Nausea and dizziness worsen after eating. The child has no motion sickness if sitting on the front seat.
 Petroleum - Dizziness, nausea, vomiting and headache. Eating, closing eyes and warmth relieve the
symptoms.
 Tabacum is indicated for people with motion sickness who have a pale face and a mouth full of saliva. They
have severe nausea and palpitations. Breathing cold, fresh air and closing their eyes alleviate the symptoms.
How to take the homeopathic medicine:
Homeopathic medicines are FDA-regulated. They can be purchased in different strengths, or potencies over the
counter. The 30C potency is most commonly used. Depending on the severity of the motion sickness symptoms,
place a few pellets (3 to 5) under the tongue to dissolve. Take the medicine every hour. Increase the dosage
interval as symptoms improve.
If your child has experienced motion sickness in the past, give him twice the medicine the day before travel.
There are remedies like Tabacum, Ipec, Ant-t, Cocculus and many others.

Homoeopathy does not treat the many - it treats the one. This means that for any Chronic problem a fairly detailed
description of the problem needs to be taken. This allows the problem to be genuinely cured rather than just
'managed'. The aim of homoeopathy is always to cure your problem not allow you to live with it. Having to live
with a problem is a failure in the eyes of a homoeopath.

For instance in your case:-

What is the exact feeling of the nausea?

What is the exact pain of the headaches?
What is the location of the headache?
What makes the headache worse and what makes it better?
What makes the nausea worse and what makes it better?
What is does the vomit look or taste like?
What is the sensation of being on a twisty/turn-filled road?
Are there any other symptoms that occur with the vomiting and nausea?
Describe the exact mood that comes on with this problem - not a few words but describe it in detail?
Do any of these symptoms occur in any other situation?
When did the travel sickness begin?
How do you manage the problem with travelling? What is the effect on your life? What is your attitude to having
such a problem?
What is the exact feeling of the nausea?
A- The feeling is with the travel on the slope of the mountains, I gradually develop headache and an uneasy
feeling and sensations of vomiting, the headache is similar to vertigo and the vomiting sensations come on and
off, and have to stop my car when I have to throw up.
What is the exact pain of the headaches?
A- The pain is a vibrating mild sensation in the head circling all over and creating an uneasy feeling in the throat
region (possibly the vomiting sensation) and esp on the forehead above eyebrows and the side temples.
What is the location of the headache?
A- As mentioned above

What makes the headache worse and what makes it better?

A- I live in Air conditioned rooms and can't do without it but on the move I don't prefer it since I have travel
sickness and it gets aggravated due to air conditioned packed cars or buses and moving on or down the hill, all
these things going simultaneously creates a problem, even now when I am writing this I feel the uneasiness of it, I
am also claustrophobic.

What makes the nausea worse and what makes it better?

A- Air conditioned packed vehicles make it even worse and the twists and turns of the roads is highly
problematic, food eaten before travel or hungry stomach before travel both make it worse, just coming out of the
car and breath of fresh air and stable position and some relaxing and break points in journey makes it better.
What is does the vomit look or taste like?

A- The vomit is sometimes very little like the quantity of a spit or whitish yellow and with food particles or liquid
last drank before the travel.

What is the sensation of being on a twisty/turn-filled road?

A- I develop headache, acidity, restlessness, perspire badly, feel extremely nauseatic, very suffocating in short it
is unbearable. I get suffocated in elevators too since I am claustrophobic.

Are there any other symptoms that occur with the vomiting and nausea?
Nope the same as discussed above, but one thing to add would be I am not comfortable on the seats since I am 6'1
tall and got large legs so have to keep moving to accomodate which makes me uncomfortable.

Describe the exact mood that comes on with this problem - not a few words but describe it in detail?
A- I develop a strange vibrating sensation in the brain and vomiting sensation in the mind and the co passenger
with me if tries to talk with me get terribly irritated since the condition inside is inexplicable and the mood is very
irritable, I come to normal terms only when I reach my destination and take some rest on a nearby bench in open
air or by sitting or squatting on road to throw up if I feel like, the whole mood is spoilt.
Do any of these symptoms occur in any other situation?
No, it happens only during travel or sometimes when I am in some claustrophobic situation.

When did the travel sickness begin?

Right from my childhood, though I dont have much trouble travelling on plain roads without slopes or turns, but
in cars I prefer fresh air but I love air conditioner at home but I have open doors at home too even when the ac is
on.
How do you manage the problem with travelling?
A- I carry lime pieces with salt and keep on licking them or keep some mint lozenges like halls etc, nothing else.

What is the effect on your

life?
The effect is bad just thinking about me sends shivers down the spine and I avoid hilly travel as far as possible
though I like hills stations.

What is your attitude to having such a problem?

A- I feel it is a very bad problem and really problematic for many since one of my sister too has this problem and
has it in more severe state than mine

The best way to prevent motion sickness is to take Cocculus half an hour before the journey, and take either
cocculus, tabacum or petroleum during the journey depending on the symptoms.

Tabacum relieves those people who feel better if they sit in the car by closing their eyes. For these people, sitting
at a car window and watching the scenery as the car goes along produces a severe nausea.
Petroleum helps those who feel the sickness more in their stomach.
If there is nausea with faintness and occasional vomiting cocculus is the remedy. If the vomiting occurs whenever
there is a bumpy ride, tabacum is the remedy. It has the vomiting on least motion.

Petroleum has the least vomiting among the three, and it has marked reeling sensation.
