SITE RULES FOR USE OF EXCAVATORS FOR LIFTING ACTIVITIES

On the PIC Project the following rules will apply for use of Excavators to perform Lifting
Activities.

 An excavator used for load handling is regarded as lifting equipment and requires
thorough examination by a competent person at least every 12 months.
 Buckets with integrated
hooks/lifting eyes are also
classed as lifting accessories
and should be thoroughly
examined every 6 months and
magna-fluxed before each use.
 Excavator operators undertaking
lifting operations shall be
trained and assessed as a crane
operator.
 Any equipment used for lifting shall have a rated object handling capacity table (load
chart) available inside the cab.
 All excavators used for lifting shall require a Rated Capacity Indicator,
a) a boom lowering control device on the raising (main) boom cylinder(s).
b) an acoustic and visual warning device which will warn the operator when the
object handling capacity or corresponding load movement is reached.
 Only trained / qualified riggers are permitted to be involved in lifting activities
including hooking an unhooking loads.
 All lifting gear shall be certified and inspected /colour coded prior to use.
 All lifts shall be planned, with a risk assessment and covered under a PTW.
 All lifting operations shall only be authorized by the EPCC Heavy Lift Specialist.
 Under no circumstance shall excavators be used to lift people
